For the three months ended December 31, 2025, Microsoft reported a $623 million, or 9%, decline in gaming revenue. Xbox content and services revenue also fell 5%.
The figures show a weaker Xbox hardware cycle and softer content performance—not a Microsoft-wide financial crisis or an announced end to Xbox consoles.
What Microsoft actually reported
The results come from Microsoft’s fiscal Q2 2026, covering the three months ended December 31, 2025, compared with the same quarter in 2024. Microsoft’s filing reports revenue categories, not a complete set of console-unit or Game Pass figures.
| Metric | Year-over-year result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft gaming revenue | Down $623 million, or 9% | Total gaming revenue declined; this is a revenue change, not a reported loss. |
| Xbox hardware revenue | Down 32% | Microsoft said lower console volume drove the decline, but it did not disclose a 32% unit-sales decrease. |
| Xbox content and services revenue | Down 5% | This broad category includes games, subscriptions such as Game Pass, and related services; Microsoft does not break out Game Pass revenue in the filing. |
Microsoft’s quarterly filing is the source for these figures.

Why “Xbox sales fell 32%” is misleading
The 32% figure applies to hardware revenue, not directly reported console units. Revenue can change because of the number of consoles sold, the mix of Series X and Series S systems, discounts, regional currency movements, accessories, average selling prices, or inventory timing.
Microsoft said the hardware decline was driven by a lower volume of consoles sold. That establishes that unit volume was lower, but the company did not publish an official unit total or unit percentage in this filing. A headline claiming that console sales fell exactly 32% converts a revenue statistic into a unit statistic the filing does not provide.
Microsoft’s stated reasons for the gaming decline
Lower hardware revenue
Hardware was one of the two direct drivers Microsoft identified. The company attributed the 32% revenue decline to lower console volume.
A tougher first-party content comparison
Content and services revenue fell 5%. Microsoft said the prior-year quarter benefited from stronger first-party content performance, creating a difficult comparison. On its earnings call, management also said first-party content performance across the platform contributed to content and services coming in below expectations.

That explanation indicates both genuine softness and a comparison effect: the current quarter was weaker, while the previous year had an unusually strong first-party contribution. It does not show that every component of the category declined equally.
What the filing does—and does not—say about Game Pass
Microsoft combines Game Pass with other content and services in one reported category. The filing therefore cannot establish whether Game Pass subscriptions or Game Pass revenue rose or fell.
A subscription can increase recurring revenue and engagement while changing when customers buy games separately. Including first-party releases in a service may reduce individual game-sale revenue but increase the service’s value. Pricing changes can raise revenue per subscriber while affecting sign-ups or retention. Those are possible business-model effects, not conclusions demonstrated by this quarter’s filing.
This was not a Microsoft-wide financial collapse
Xbox’s weakness was concentrated inside Microsoft’s gaming business. Microsoft reported total company revenue of $81.3 billion, up 17% year over year, for the quarter on its fiscal Q2 2026 earnings page.

The $623 million figure is a year-over-year reduction in gaming revenue. It is not an operating loss, net loss, cash loss, or a $623 million decline in Microsoft’s profit. Revenue and profitability are separate measurements.
What later Xbox statements reveal about the strategic pressure
Statements made in 2026 provide context for why hardware economics and platform strategy became central issues, but they were published months after the December 2025 quarter and should not be treated as Microsoft’s contemporaneous explanation for that quarter.
Rising component costs and a proposed reset
In June 2026, Xbox said it had invested more than $20 billion over five years in content, platform, and hardware subsidies, excluding Activision Blizzard King, while annual revenue had declined by nearly half a billion dollars over that period. Xbox also said storage-component prices were more than twice the previous autumn’s level, had doubled again, and could exceed five times the price paid two years earlier by the 2027 holiday season; it said memory costs were following a broadly similar path. These were Xbox’s projections and descriptions of 2026 cost pressure, not a quantified cause of the December 2025 decline.
In the same communication, Xbox said it remained committed to console hardware while pursuing a new business model and hardware partnerships. Read the announcement on Xbox Wire.

Lower margins, a smaller install base and studio overextension
In July 2026, Xbox described lower-than-comparable margins, a smaller ninth-generation console install base, a higher cost structure and an overextended studio system. It also said platform teams had grown while player base and playtime declined, prompting organizational simplification and a reset of its content portfolio, platform and operations. The details are in Xbox’s July reset update.
The business tension behind the numbers
Microsoft increasingly treats Xbox as an ecosystem spanning console, PC, mobile and streaming. That can expand the number of people who play Xbox games, but it also weakens the traditional link between buying an Xbox console and accessing Xbox content.
- Reach: PC, mobile and cloud access can put games in front of more potential players.
- Hardware economics: Console subsidies and rising component costs make a large installed base expensive to maintain.
- Content economics: Game Pass, first-party releases and multiplatform publishing can support engagement while changing the mix between subscriptions and individual game sales.
- Platform risk: If major releases are available elsewhere, some consumers may have less reason to purchase Xbox hardware.
This trade-off is a strategic interpretation of Microsoft’s direction, not proof that cross-platform availability caused the 32% hardware-revenue decline.

Console buyers
One weak quarter does not show that Xbox consoles are being discontinued. However, cost pressure and the stated reset could affect future hardware designs, partnerships, prices, release timing and availability. Check the official Xbox console page for current products rather than assuming that a financial headline implies a discount or shortage.

Game Pass subscribers
The reported 5% content-and-services decline does not reveal Game Pass’s standalone performance. Compare the current catalog, supported devices and terms on the official Game Pass page and consider whether you play enough titles to justify a recurring subscription.
People considering cloud gaming
Cloud gaming can provide Xbox access without purchasing a console, but performance depends on country, device, connection quality, latency and data limits. Availability and supported games vary; consult Xbox Cloud Gaming’s official information before relying on it as a replacement for local hardware.
Existing owners
Accessories and storage remain practical purchases for people already using Xbox, but buyers uncertain about Microsoft’s hardware direction may prefer to delay nonessential upgrades. Official accessories are listed at Xbox Accessories.
What to watch in future results
- Whether hardware revenue stabilizes or continues to fall, and whether Microsoft provides any unit data.
- The cadence and performance of first-party releases.
- Game Pass pricing, engagement and the mix between subscription and individual sales.
- Multiplatform releases and their effect on Xbox hardware demand.
- Component costs, console pricing and the details of new hardware partnerships.
- Player reach and playtime across console, PC, mobile and cloud services.
The accurate conclusion is narrower than the viral headline: Microsoft’s gaming revenue declined $623 million, Xbox hardware revenue fell 32% on lower console volume, and content and services fell 5% in the quarter ended December 31, 2025. Those results signal strategic stress in Xbox hardware and content performance, but they do not establish a 32% collapse in console units, a Game Pass collapse, a Microsoft-wide crisis or an exit from consoles.
