Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuy a refurbished Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen 3 with an Intel processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Walmart showed a restored example at $48 when checked in August 2026, while Google lists automatic updates for this model through June 2031. Treat that price as a dated marketplace snapshot, not a guaranteed ongoing offer.
Before keeping any unit, confirm the exact generation, U.S. keyboard, included charger, return terms, management status and the device’s own update schedule. At this budget, a supported and returnable Chromebook is a better deal than the cheapest old machine.
The under-$100 target
The Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen 3 is the best model to hunt for in the U.S. refurbished market below $100. The recommended configuration uses an Intel processor (the observed listing identified an Intel Celeron N4500), 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Walmart’s ChromeOS listings showed one restored unit at $48 in August 2026: Walmart ChromeOS laptop listings.
Google’s model-specific table gives the Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen 3 an automatic-update expiration (AUE) date of June 2031: Google’s Auto Update policy. That remaining support is the main reason to favor it over many cheaper, older school-fleet Chromebooks.

What the recommendation means
This is a target model, not a promise that every listing will remain available at $48. Price, shipping, tax, condition, keyboard layout and seller quality can change the real cost. “Refurbished” is not a standardized battery or cosmetic grade, so inspect the individual listing.
What it can do—and where it runs out of room
| Task | Practical expectation |
|---|---|
| Email and web browsing | Yes |
| Google Docs and Sheets | Yes, with moderate multitasking |
| School portals | Generally suitable |
| YouTube and ordinary streaming | Suitable for basic use |
| Video calls | Basic calls; do not expect premium performance |
| Many browser tabs or heavy web apps | Limited by 4GB of RAM |
| Windows-only software | No, unless a web alternative is available |
| Gaming | Lightweight browser or compatible Android titles only |
| Large local media collections | Poor fit with 32GB storage |
Four gigabytes of RAM is enough for a modest number of tabs, Docs, email, ordinary streaming and basic schoolwork. It becomes restrictive with many tabs, large spreadsheets, simultaneous video calls and graphics-heavy web applications. The entry-level processor and storage also make this a poor choice for local photo or video editing, professional desktop software, modern games or extensive offline files.
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Is 32GB enough?
It can work when documents and media live in Google Drive or another cloud service. Offline files, Android apps, downloads and ChromeOS temporary space consume local storage quickly. Delete downloads regularly, keep free space available for updates and use a compatible external drive or microSD card only if the specific model supports it.
Verify the support date on the actual Chromebook
Google says ChromeOS updates include security updates, bug fixes and new features during the supported period: Chromebook Help. A seller’s claim such as “latest Chrome OS” is not an AUE date.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
- Open the Chromebook and select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Read the date under Update schedule.
For this recommendation, look for an update schedule through June 2031. The on-device schedule is the most reliable check for the particular unit; compare it with Google’s model table rather than relying on a generic product-family name.
Use this checklist before ordering
- Exact identity: The listing must say Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen 3, not merely “Lenovo Chromebook” or “100e laptop.” Ask for the model number or a photo of the About ChromeOS page if the description is vague.
- Hardware: Seek the Intel configuration with at least 4GB of RAM. The 32GB capacity is acceptable for cloud-first use.
- Keyboard: Confirm a U.S. English layout. Refurbished listings can include Canadian French or other layouts; inspect photographs and specifications.
- Charger: Confirm that a working compatible charger is included.
- Enrollment: Make sure the device is not still managed by a school or company.
- Condition: Check disclosed battery health, screen damage, dead pixels, hinges, ports, Wi-Fi and camera.
- Returns: Prefer a retailer or refurbisher with a clearly stated return period.
- Total cost: Compare the delivered price after shipping and tax, not just the headline price.
- Seller: Review the seller’s identity, ratings and condition grading.
How an enterprise lock can spoil the bargain
A factory reset does not necessarily remove enterprise enrollment. During setup, an organization-enrollment request or administrator-controlled message means the Chromebook may still belong to a school’s management system. Ask the seller to have the organization remove it; if that cannot be confirmed, use the return policy rather than accepting the device.

Test the battery during the return period
Refurbished listings may not disclose battery capacity. Run the Chromebook on battery, watch for an unusually rapid percentage drop or shutdown under ordinary use, and return it if ChromeOS reports a battery problem or runtime is clearly unacceptable.
Refurbished versus used
| Buying route | Advantages | Risks |
|---|---|---|
| Refurbished retailer | Often tested or cleaned; usually easier checkout, support and returns | Battery health, cosmetic grading and included accessories vary by refurbisher |
| Used marketplace | Sometimes cheaper and offers more exact-model choices | Higher risk of locked devices, missing chargers, worn batteries, damaged hinges and inaccurate descriptions; return protection varies |
For a personal-finance purchase, a clear return policy is worth more than saving a few dollars on a private listing.

Fallback models when the 100e Gen 3 is unavailable
| Model | What is established | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo 500e 2-in-1 | Walmart showed a refurbished example at $94.99; convertible/touchscreen design may appeal to some buyers: Walmart listings | Exact generation and AUE date. Different 500e generations have different support windows; the 500e Chromebook 2nd Gen is listed through June 2029 by Google. |
| Dell Chromebook 3100 | Google lists automatic updates through June 2029: Google’s Auto Update policy | Battery, condition, charger, seller and delivered price. Refurbished inventory can be found through Best Buy’s refurbished Chromebook category. |
| HP Chromebook 11 G8 EE | Google lists automatic updates through June 2029 | School-fleet wear, battery health and enterprise enrollment. |
| Lenovo 100e Chromebook 2nd Gen | Some variants are listed through June 2029; the 2nd Gen MTK through June 2027, MTK 2 through June 2030, and AST through June 2029 | Exact processor variant and whether an asterisked extended-update condition applies. Do not treat every “100e 2nd Gen” listing as interchangeable. |
Walmart also showed refurbished 100e 2nd Gen examples below $100, including one at $48.99, but model and support verification remains essential: Walmart refurbished Chromebook listings.
When spending more is justified
Move above the $100 ceiling if you need 8GB of RAM, at least 64GB of storage, a 1080p display, a newer processor, stronger battery health, a longer warranty, a larger screen or a dependable touchscreen and hinge. The under-$100 choice is for basic, cloud-centered computing—not maximum speed, comfort or multitasking.
Also confirm software compatibility before buying. ChromeOS works well with web applications, but software requiring Windows, macOS, specialized drivers or a full desktop installation may not work. ChromeOS Flex is not a guaranteed rescue route: Google maintains a certified-device list, and installing another operating system can change hardware support and the ChromeOS experience (ChromeOS Flex certified models).
Bottom line for a sub-$100 buyer
Hunt for the refurbished Intel Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen 3 with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Keep it only when the exact device shows updates through June 2031, has the right keyboard and charger, is free of enterprise enrollment, and comes with a usable return policy. The best bargain is not the oldest Chromebook at the lowest sticker price; it is the cheapest correctly identified, supported and returnable one.
