No confirmed Apple-Peloton deal has been announced. The headline traces to a January 2024 prediction by investment firm Deepwater Asset Management—not a reported Apple offer or announced negotiation. Deepwater estimated Peloton could add about $1.7 billion in subscription revenue, but that was a forecast, not a figure Apple endorsed or a projection of profit. As of August 18, 2026, Peloton was still reporting results and pursuing its own strategy as an independent company.
Where did the Apple-Peloton rumor come from?
In January 2024, Deepwater Asset Management predicted that Apple would acquire Peloton, arguing that the fitness company could strengthen Apple’s workout offering. AppleInsider described the prediction and its assumptions, but it did not report a confirmed bid or negotiations: AppleInsider’s January 2024 analysis.
That distinction matters. A transaction report typically cites evidence such as an offer, negotiations, due diligence or board activity. A prediction is an analyst’s view about what might happen. The Apple-Peloton claim falls into the latter category. Earlier, in 2022, speculation about potential buyers such as Amazon and Nike circulated as Peloton’s valuation fell; that broader sale speculation did not establish that Apple had made an offer. See MacRumors’ background on Pegatron and the 2022 speculation.
Why could an Apple acquisition make strategic sense?
The companies have adjacent businesses. Apple connects workouts and health features to Apple Watch and offers guided classes through Apple Fitness+. Peloton brings a recognized instructor-led fitness brand, a content library, connected equipment and a community built around its classes. In theory, Apple could connect Peloton equipment and content more closely to its devices and services, or make those workouts available to a wider audience.

Apple already has substantial reach without buying Peloton. In January 2026, Apple said its installed base exceeded 2.5 billion active devices. It also said Apple One Premier, which includes Apple Fitness+, was available in more than 20 markets. Those are company-reported figures, and bundle availability varies by geography. Apple’s own updates are at its fiscal Q1 2026 results and its 2025 Services recap.
Apple Fitness+ and Peloton are not interchangeable. Fitness+ fits into Apple’s device and services ecosystem; Peloton has a stronger identity around dedicated connected equipment, instructors and member community. Buying Peloton could give Apple a distinct fitness brand and equipment business, but it would also mean operating or reshaping that business.

What does the $1.7 billion figure actually mean?
The approximately $1.7 billion figure came from Deepwater’s prediction about Peloton’s subscribers and potential subscription revenue. It was not Apple’s estimate, a reported purchase price, or a forecast of profit. Deepwater’s prediction did not establish how many subscribers would stay after a deal, whether pricing or plans would change, or what revenue would be offset by content, hardware, customer support and integration costs.
Revenue measures money coming in, not what remains after expenses. Nor is Peloton’s total revenue the same thing as subscription revenue: the company sells equipment as well as subscriptions and has commercial operations. Its FY2026 revenue outlook was approximately $2.42 billion to $2.44 billion, according to its Q3 FY2026 release; that was company guidance, not final annual revenue and not a forecast of what Apple would gain.

Why might Apple decide against buying Peloton?
Peloton is an operating business, not just a content library
A full acquisition would bring more than classes and subscribers. Apple would have to choose whether to keep selling Peloton bikes and treadmills, support existing equipment and warranties, maintain the brand, integrate or separate subscriptions, and manage delivery, installation, repairs and returns. Peloton also serves commercial customers. These obligations could make a deal far more involved than adding videos to a streaming catalog.
The companies overlap, but their products are not identical
Apple already has Fitness+, so it would need to decide what Peloton adds that organic investment or a narrower partnership could not. The two services have different strengths, but some customers may already use Apple devices or services. It is reasonable to infer that a merger could shift some existing Apple users between offerings rather than add entirely new subscribers; that is an analytical possibility, not a reported Apple view.

The price and financial obligations would matter
An AppleInsider analysis in January 2024 estimated Peloton could cost at least about $9 billion at the time and compared that outside estimate with Apple’s approximately $3 billion Beats purchase. Neither figure was an Apple offer for Peloton, and the $9 billion estimate should not be treated as Peloton’s current valuation. A buyer would also need to assess debt and the costs of operating and integrating the business.
Apple’s Services business has been growing without Peloton. Apple reported record Services performance in fiscal Q3 2026, for the quarter ended June 27, 2026. That does not rule out a deal, but it weakens the case that Apple needs to buy Peloton to expand Services. See Apple’s fiscal Q3 2026 results.

Peloton’s financial and strategic position in 2026
Peloton’s May 7, 2026, Q3 FY2026 release reported results for the quarter ended March 31. The company reported $631 million in quarterly revenue and 2.662 million paid Connected Fitness subscriptions. It also reported $1.299 billion in total debt and $173 million in net debt as of March 31. Adjusted EBITDA was $126 million, and free cash flow was $151 million for the quarter. These figures describe an improving financial picture alongside a substantial operating and debt burden; they do not establish that a sale is planned.
Peloton’s metrics use different definitions. Its investor-relations materials have described more than 6 million members, while its paid Connected Fitness subscription count was 2.662 million at March 31, 2026. “Members,” paid Connected Fitness subscriptions and paid App subscriptions are not interchangeable counts. For the company’s reporting and definitions, consult the Q3 FY2026 release and Peloton’s investor-relations site.
Peloton has also been pursuing a standalone direction. CEO and president Peter Stern, who previously worked at Apple and Ford and was associated with the creation of Apple Fitness+, leads the company; his background may help explain why people speculate about strategic ties, but it is not evidence of an acquisition. Peloton’s Q3 FY2026 release highlighted its Commercial Series and a global Spotify partnership. Those initiatives show the company developing commercial and content opportunities of its own.
What could happen instead of a full acquisition?
These are possible paths, not announced plans:
- Apple buys Peloton outright. Apple would obtain the brand, equipment business, subscriptions, content, instructors and commercial operations, along with their financial and service obligations.
- Apple buys selected assets. A deal for content, talent, technology or intellectual property could be narrower than a whole-company purchase. No such transaction was verified in the sources cited here.
- The companies partner. They could theoretically work together on services or device integration while Peloton remained independent. No partnership of this kind is established by the cited material.
- Peloton remains independent. This is the baseline reflected in its 2026 financial reporting, product initiatives and partnerships.
How to judge future Apple-Peloton headlines
Look for concrete evidence before treating a headline as news. A prediction, a former Apple executive working at Peloton, or a plausible strategic fit does not establish that Apple is interested or has made an offer. More meaningful confirmation would be an attributable report of negotiations or an offer, a filing, or an announcement from either company. The available sources do not prove that private conversations never occurred; they do not establish a formal offer, announced negotiations or an agreed transaction.
