Microsoft Q4 FY2024 Results: Intelligent Cloud Led Profit as AI Investment and Activision Lifted Growth

Microsoft’s June 2024 quarter was strong, but its reported results do not support ranking AI, cloud and gaming as separate profit leaders. Intelligent Cloud led operating income, while AI investment and Activision shaped the growth story.

Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30, 2024, was strong overall—but the claim that “AI, cloud tech, and gaming” were its three most profitable businesses is not supported by Microsoft’s accounting. Revenue reached $64.727 billion and operating income $27.925 billion. Intelligent Cloud produced the most operating income, while Productivity and Business Processes had the highest operating margin. Azure grew quickly, AI spending was reshaping costs, and gaming revenue jumped largely because of the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

This was Microsoft’s fiscal Q4 2024, announced July 30, 2024—not calendar-year fourth quarter 2024.

What Microsoft reported in fiscal Q4 2024

Microsoft’s GAAP results for the three months ended June 30, 2024 were:

Metric Q4 FY2024 Year over year
Revenue $64.727 billion +15%
Operating income $27.925 billion +15%
Net income $22.036 billion +10%
Diluted EPS $2.95 +10%
Gross margin $45.043 billion Not stated
Dividends and repurchases $8.4 billion Quarterly total

Microsoft’s full fiscal year ran from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. Full-year revenue was $245.122 billion, operating income $109.433 billion, net income $88.136 billion and diluted EPS $11.80. These are GAAP figures; adjusted comparisons in Microsoft’s release should not be mixed with them.

Which reported segment was most profitable?

Microsoft reports three operating segments, not separate “AI,” “cloud tech” and “gaming” profit centers.

Segment Q4 revenue Q4 operating income Approx. operating margin
Productivity and Business Processes $20.317 billion $10.143 billion 49.9%
Intelligent Cloud $28.515 billion $12.859 billion 45.1%
More Personal Computing $15.895 billion $4.923 billion 31.0%

Intelligent Cloud was the largest profit contributor and the largest segment by revenue. Its $12.859 billion of operating income represented roughly 46% of the operating income reported across the three segments. That is segment profit, not Azure-only profit.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13.5" Touchscreen Notebook - 2256 x 1504 - Intel Core i7 12th Gen i7-1265U - Intel Evo Platform - 16 GB Total RAM - 512 GB SSD (Platinum) (Renewed)

  • 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
  • 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop

Productivity and Business Processes had the best margin. Its approximately 49.9% operating margin exceeded Intelligent Cloud’s approximately 45.1%, even though it generated less total operating income. “Most profitable” therefore depends on whether you mean absolute operating income or margin.

What Intelligent Cloud includes

Intelligent Cloud is broader than Azure. It includes Azure and other cloud services, server products, enterprise services and related offerings. Microsoft Cloud is broader still: its commercial portfolio includes Azure, Office 365 Commercial, the commercial portion of LinkedIn, Dynamics 365 and other commercial cloud properties, as described in Microsoft’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K.

For the full year, Intelligent Cloud generated $105.362 billion of revenue and $49.584 billion of operating income—again the highest totals among the three segments. Productivity and Business Processes generated $77.728 billion of revenue and $40.540 billion of operating income, while More Personal Computing generated $62.032 billion and $19.309 billion respectively.

Azure growth was strong, but it was not an AI profit disclosure

Azure and other cloud services revenue increased 29% year over year, or 30% in constant currency. Server products and cloud services revenue rose 21%, driven by Azure and other cloud services. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $36.8 billion in the quarter, up 21%.

Microsoft did not say that AI generated 29% growth. Azure contains AI and non-AI workloads, and the earnings release did not provide standalone AI revenue, AI operating income or Copilot profit. Microsoft described demand across its portfolio of cloud services and continued investment in AI capacity.

Microsoft said Microsoft Cloud gross-margin percentage was approximately 71% for fiscal 2024 and had declined slightly. Its commentary attributed the margin dynamics partly to scaling AI infrastructure and a sales mix shifting toward Azure. The company said that, excluding a useful-life accounting change, margin improved slightly through Azure and Office 365 Commercial, partly offset by AI-infrastructure scaling and mix. Why the accounting boundary matters

  • AI is embedded across Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics, security, search and other products.
  • Data centers, servers, networking and depreciation can rise before all related AI revenue arrives.
  • Microsoft reports Intelligent Cloud operating income, not Azure-only or AI-only operating income.
  • Consequently, no defensible Q4 calculation can label AI or Azure as an independently reported profit pool.

Investors therefore had to assess both the 29% Azure growth rate and the cost of building capacity. Contemporary market coverage noted that the total quarter was strong while Azure growth was slower than some expectations, putting attention on the pace and quality of AI-related demand. Axios reported that market context.

Why gaming revenue jumped

More Personal Computing revenue rose 14% to $15.895 billion. Within it, Xbox content and services revenue increased 61%. Microsoft said the Activision Blizzard acquisition contributed 58 percentage points of net impact to that growth.

More Personal Computing item Q4 change
Xbox content and services +61%
Devices −11%
Windows +7%
Search and news advertising, excluding traffic acquisition costs +19%

The acquisition explanation is essential. A 61% increase in Xbox content and services was not presented as wholly organic demand, and it does not show that Xbox hardware was broadly strong. Devices revenue declined 11%.

Nor can More Personal Computing’s $4.923 billion operating income be called gaming profit. The segment combines Windows, devices, gaming and search advertising. Microsoft did not disclose standalone gaming revenue by all components or standalone gaming operating income. Its fiscal-year commentary said gaming helped drive cost-of-revenue growth and operating-expense growth, with seven percentage points of operating-expense growth coming from the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

What the quarter proves—and what it does not

Supported conclusions

  • Microsoft remained highly profitable, with double-digit quarterly revenue and operating-income growth.
  • Intelligent Cloud was the primary operating-profit engine in Q4 and fiscal 2024.
  • Azure was a major growth driver, increasing 29% year over year.
  • AI investment was materially affecting infrastructure requirements and Microsoft Cloud margins.
  • Activision broadened Microsoft’s gaming content and services revenue base.

Conclusions the data cannot establish

  • That AI was independently profitable in Q4 FY2024.
  • That Azure generated Intelligent Cloud’s entire $12.859 billion of operating income.
  • That gaming generated More Personal Computing’s entire $4.923 billion of operating income.
  • That the 61% Xbox content-and-services increase was organic.
  • That Xbox hardware demand was healthy; Devices revenue declined.
  • That Azure growth was accelerating; the reported rate was below the prior quarter’s rate.

How to read Microsoft’s Q4 numbers as an investor

Revenue measures sales, operating income measures profit after cost of revenue and operating expenses, and operating margin is operating income divided by revenue. A fast-growing product can add sales without producing the most profit, especially when capacity investment is running ahead of monetization.

For Microsoft, the practical trade-off was clear: expanding AI infrastructure could support future Azure and Copilot demand, but it also raised near-term capacity and depreciation costs. Activision added content and recurring revenue opportunities, while also increasing expenses and integration complexity. Microsoft’s diversified reporting means a product growth rate should never be substituted for company-wide or segment-level profitability.

For the full-year perspective, Microsoft Cloud revenue was $137.4 billion in fiscal 2024, compared with $111.6 billion in fiscal 2023. That measure includes several commercial cloud businesses and should not be treated as Azure revenue alone.

Bottom line for the original claim

Microsoft’s fiscal Q4 2024 validated strong cloud-led financial performance, not a three-way ranking in which AI, cloud technology and gaming were separately the most profitable businesses. Intelligent Cloud led total operating income; Productivity and Business Processes led operating margin. Azure growth demonstrated substantial demand, while AI remained a cross-company investment theme without standalone profit disclosure. Gaming revenue rose sharply, but Activision was a major contributor and hardware declined.
