Re:

Major Auto Parts Firm LKQ Hit by Cyberattack: What Happened in 2024 and What the Later Data Breach Means

LKQ’s November 2024 incident was a localized Canadian operational disruption, not a confirmed ransomware attack. A separate 2025 Oracle iReceivables breach involved downloaded records and 9,070 affected people in state reporting.

LKQ Corporation disclosed in December 2024 that an unauthorized party accessed information-technology systems at one Canadian business unit beginning on or around November 13. The incident disrupted that unit for several weeks, but LKQ said it had returned to near-full capacity and that the effect was not material to the company’s financial condition or annual results.

LKQ did not publicly confirm ransomware, identify the attacker, or establish that personal information was stolen in that 2024 event. A separate incident disclosed later involved LKQ’s Oracle iReceivables application in 2025 and the downloading of certain customer, supplier and employee records.

What happened in the November 2024 LKQ cyberattack?

LKQ said it detected unauthorized access on November 13, 2024, at the IT systems of a single Canadian business unit. The company described the resulting disruption as lasting “a few weeks.” It did not say that all LKQ operations, its entire corporate network or every Canadian location was taken offline.

By the time of LKQ’s filing, the affected unit was operating near full capacity. LKQ said containment and mitigation efforts prevented the incident from being material, or reasonably likely to become material, to its financial condition or fiscal-year results. The company also said it intended to seek reimbursement for costs, expenses and losses through its cyber-insurance coverage; that statement does not establish that every loss was covered or paid.

LKQ’s annual-report disclosure is the primary account of the event. SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous report summarizes that filing and notes that no known threat actor had claimed responsibility: LKQ’s 2024 annual report and SecurityWeek’s December 2024 report.

Was LKQ hit by ransomware?

Ransomware was not confirmed. LKQ used terms such as unauthorized access, disruption, containment and mitigation. Publicly available reporting does not establish encryption, ransom negotiations, extortion, a leak-site listing or a ransom payment. The most accurate description is an unauthorized-access cyber incident that caused localized operational disruption.

A separate 2025 Oracle iReceivables data breach

LKQ’s 2025 Form 10-K describes a different incident. In early October 2025, the company determined that an unauthorized actor had accessed its Oracle iReceivables application and downloaded certain customer, supplier and employee records. LKQ said that event was contained and likewise was not material to its financial condition or results of operations. Read the retrospective disclosure in LKQ’s 2025 Form 10-K.

State breach records list August 9, 2025, as the breach date and December 15, 2025, as the date individual notices were sent. Indiana reporting lists 9,070 affected individuals nationally. That number belongs to the later Oracle-related event, not the November 2024 Canadian disruption. The apparent date difference is explainable: August may describe the suspected access date, while early October describes when LKQ determined what had happened.

The Massachusetts notice says LKQ was analyzing the affected data to determine whether it contained personal information and offered credit-monitoring and identity-restoration services to eligible people. The notices do not justify assuming that every LKQ customer, employee or supplier was affected, or that particular data types such as Social Security numbers or bank details were exposed.

What LKQ says about its cybersecurity program

LKQ reports board and Audit Committee oversight, Chief Information Security Officer involvement and controls that include multifactor authentication, endpoint detection and response, privileged-access management, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, web-application firewalls, secure web and email gateways, cloud-security posture management, incident-response plans, employee training, tabletop exercises, vulnerability testing, outside assessments, third-party risk management and cyber insurance. Its 2023 annual report lists these measures at this SEC filing.

The list does not reveal which control was bypassed, whether credentials were compromised, whether multifactor authentication protected the affected systems or whether a vendor was the entry point. LKQ’s filings acknowledge third-party cyber risk, but do not identify a supplier as the route into either incident.

Why a “not material” incident still matters

“Not material” is a financial-reporting conclusion, not a claim that the event was harmless. LKQ’s distributed parts business relies on technology for sales, inventory, procurement, logistics, distribution and administration. Even a regional interruption can delay orders or deliveries, create investigation and remediation costs, affect employees or suppliers, trigger insurance and regulatory work, and damage customer confidence.

The later Oracle event shows why operational impact and privacy impact must be assessed separately: LKQ described that incident as financially non-material while state notices documented affected individuals and offered identity-restoration assistance.

What affected people should do

If you received an LKQ breach notice, follow the instructions in that notice before buying a replacement service.

  1. Enroll in any complimentary credit-monitoring or identity-restoration service offered by LKQ, if you are eligible.
  2. Review account statements and credit reports for unfamiliar activity. The federally authorized source is AnnualCreditReport.com.
  3. Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
  4. Change passwords reused on other services and enable multifactor authentication, especially for email and financial accounts.
  5. Contact the organization named in the notice through the contact details printed there if you need to confirm what information was involved.

Generic antivirus software does not directly address personal information that may have been accessed in a corporate application. A paid identity-monitoring subscription may also be unnecessary while an LKQ-provided service remains available.

What the public record supports

  • The 2024 event was unauthorized access at one Canadian business unit with several weeks of disruption.
  • LKQ reported near-full recovery and no material company-wide financial effect.
  • Ransomware, a named threat actor, encryption and ransom payment were not confirmed.
  • Personal-data theft was not established in the 2024 disclosure.
  • The 2025 Oracle iReceivables event was separate and involved downloaded records.
  • The 9,070-person figure comes from state reporting for the later event, not the 2024 incident.
  • No public evidence supports describing either event as a confirmed enterprise-wide shutdown.
