Apple offered a time-limited Lunar New Year promotion in mainland China from January 24 through January 27, 2026, discounting selected products by up to 1,000 yuan (about US$144 at the exchange rate reported at the time). The campaign covered selected iPhone 16-series devices, Macs, iPads, Apple Watches, AirPods and accessories, but not the iPhone 17 line. The offer has ended; it was a holiday sales incentive, not a permanent China-wide price cut.
What Apple discounted
The promotion ran through Apple’s mainland-China website and official retail stores. Eligibility depended on the exact model, configuration and payment method. Apple’s announced maximum was 1,000 yuan, rather than a 1,000-yuan reduction on every product.
| Category | Examples reported as eligible | Reported discount | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16e | Up to 300 yuan for iPhone 16/16 Plus; about 200 yuan for iPhone 16e | Model and configuration specific; amounts reported by Chinese technology outlets |
| Mac | MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac | About 400–1,000 yuan in reported examples | 13-inch MacBook Air with M4 was reported at about 700 yuan off; 15-inch at about 800 yuan off; some MacBook Pro configurations reached 1,000 yuan |
| iPad | iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad and iPad mini | Not stated consistently across sources | Exact discounts varied by model and configuration |
| Wearables and audio | Apple Watch and AirPods | Not stated consistently across sources | Only selected products qualified |
| Accessories | Apple Pencil Pro and other listed accessories | Not stated consistently across sources | Promotion terms and payment restrictions applied |
The product categories and payment restrictions were summarized from Apple’s China promotion information by 9to5Mac. Detailed model-level amounts were reported by MyDrivers and PConline. Selected Alipay, WeChat Pay and qualifying Chinese bank-card payments were reportedly required, so the headline discount was not unconditional.
Which iPhones were included?
The offer focused on the previous generation and lower-priced models. Reporting identified the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, while detailed promotion summaries also listed the iPhone 16e. The iPhone 17 was explicitly excluded from this Lunar New Year campaign; there is no basis to say that the iPhone 17 Pro or other iPhone 17 models received the same offer. Reuters’ report carried by Investing.com and South China Morning Post coverage both described the newest generation as outside the promotion.

Why Apple used a Lunar New Year promotion
Holiday shopping timing
Lunar New Year is a major Chinese consumption period. A short campaign gives Apple a way to compete for holiday purchases without changing its standard list prices for the rest of the year.
Competitive pricing pressure
Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo were competing aggressively across Chinese price bands, including premium phones. E-commerce discounts and other promotions made Apple’s official pricing less attractive even when its products retained strong brand demand.

Evidence of softer momentum
Counterpoint analyst Ivan Lam told the South China Morning Post that Apple’s sales had fallen month over month late in 2025. That explains why analysts framed the offer as a response to slowing demand, but Apple’s announcement itself was a promotion notice, not an admission that its China business was in crisis.
Product-cycle and inventory management
Discounting iPhone 16 models while excluding iPhone 17 can support holiday sell-through of older inventory and preserve the newest model’s premium positioning. This is an interpretation of the product selection, not a strategy Apple publicly stated.

Why a strong market-share quarter did not eliminate the need for discounts
Apple reportedly held about 22% of China’s smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2025, helped by demand for the iPhone 17. At the same time, the overall Chinese smartphone market contracted year over year, and MacRumors cited a 1.6% year-over-year shipment decline in the fourth quarter and a 0.6% decline for the full year. These figures describe different measures: market share, total-market shipments and Apple’s month-to-month sales trend are not interchangeable. MacRumors and the SCMP therefore support a mixed conclusion: Apple remained highly competitive in the launch quarter, while underlying demand and the broader market were weaker.
The promotion followed another January discount
SCMP described the Lunar New Year event as Apple’s second major China promotion in less than a month. A January 4–7, 2026 campaign offered up to 800 yuan off. Repeated short campaigns suggest Apple was willing to stimulate demand tactically while keeping official standard prices intact. They do not establish that Apple permanently reduced prices or that the promotions met an internal sales target.

How China’s government subsidy affected Apple buyers
Separate from Apple’s promotion, China’s consumer-electronics program offered a 15% refund on eligible smartphones and other electronics priced below 6,000 yuan (about US$820 in the cited coverage). Eligibility depended on the product’s sticker price and local implementation rules. Higher-priced iPhone Pro models generally sat above the threshold, while less expensive models had a better chance of qualifying. The subsidy was not an Apple discount, and not every Apple product was automatically excluded or included. See the qualification details reported by MacRumors and Reuters via Investing.com.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the campaign says about Apple’s China strategy
- It was tactical, not a broad list-price reset. The four-day window and model-specific terms limited the commitment.
- Older models carried the promotional burden. Excluding iPhone 17 protected the latest generation’s headline pricing.
- Apple faced a subsidy disadvantage at the top end. Products above the 6,000-yuan threshold could not receive the reported 15% benefit.
- Discounts cannot solve every competitive issue. Local brand loyalty, Huawei’s premium position, ecosystem differences, China-specific features and weaker demand remain separate challenges.
The available announcement and analyst coverage do not show how many extra devices sold, whether Apple’s margins fell, or whether its full-year China revenue improved. Those outcomes require later shipment, sell-through or financial data.

What buyers needed to check
- Confirm the exact model and storage configuration. “Up to 1,000 yuan” applied only to selected products.
- Check the payment method. The reported terms limited eligibility to specified payment channels, including qualifying Alipay, WeChat Pay and bank-card transactions.
- Separate the two forms of support. Apple’s discount and the government subsidy had different rules; a buyer could qualify for one, both or neither.
- Compare authorized retailers. JD.com, Tmall and other Chinese channels may set separate prices, warranties and promotions.
- Account for product age. A discounted iPhone 16 may cost less while offering an older processor and a shorter remaining product cycle than iPhone 17.
- Verify current availability. The Apple event ended January 27, 2026 and applied only in mainland China. Current prices must be checked at Apple China or an authorized local seller.
How Apple compares with local alternatives
Huawei is the closest premium China-market comparison, while Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo offer broader Android choices and different strengths in camera hardware, charging and price. Buyers who depend on iOS, Apple services or continuity across Apple devices may value an older discounted iPhone differently from someone prioritizing hardware specifications or local ecosystem integration. Official manufacturer sites include Huawei China, Xiaomi China, OPPO China and vivo China.
What this means now
As of August 18, 2026, the Lunar New Year offer is a completed historical promotion. It shows Apple using short-term discounts to defend holiday demand and older-model sell-through amid intense Chinese competition. It does not prove that Apple is collapsing in China, nor that it has fully solved its growth problem: the same reporting shows strong quarterly share alongside a weak overall market and month-to-month pressure.
The Bottom Line
Apple’s January 24–27, 2026 China campaign was a targeted holiday incentive of up to 1,000 yuan on selected products—not a permanent price cut and not an iPhone 17 discount. It signaled competitive and demand pressure while preserving Apple’s newest model’s premium position.
