The app let customers pre-enroll by photographing one or both palms and adding a payment method; a compatible Amazon One reader still had to capture the palm and vein pattern in person. Amazon discontinued Amazon One at retail businesses on June 3, 2026, so new shoppers cannot use it for retail checkout today.
What Amazon One actually launched
Amazon launched the Amazon One mobile app, not a phone-based payment network. The app was designed to move much of enrollment away from a checkout line. Customers could sign in with an Amazon account, photograph one or both palms, add a payment method and manage their Amazon One profile.
The app photo did not itself authorize a purchase. Enrollment was completed only after the customer hovered an enrolled palm over an Amazon One device at a participating business. That device performed the biometric match and handled the eligible payment, entry, age-verification or loyalty transaction.
How the historical enrollment and checkout process worked
- Download the Amazon One app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in with an Amazon account.
- Photograph one or both palms in the app.
- Add a payment method.
- Visit a venue with an Amazon One reader.
- Hover the enrolled palm over the reader.
- Let Amazon compare the app enrollment with the reader’s palm-and-vein capture.
- Use the matched identity for an eligible payment, venue entry, age check or loyalty benefit.
The important distinction was convenience, not elimination of hardware: the app reduced signup time, while the physical reader remained essential for use.

What the reader measured
Amazon described Amazon One as analyzing the palm and underlying vein structure, rather than merely saving an ordinary palm photograph. The device used near-infrared imagery to create a numerical, vector-based palm signature. Amazon said that signature was matched with the image supplied during app enrollment.
Amazon also said generative AI and synthetic palm images were used to train its machine-learning models and claimed an accuracy rate of 99.9999%. That figure is an Amazon-reported performance claim, not an independently verified measurement.

Where Amazon One was intended to work
At the March 2024 app announcement, Amazon said Amazon One was available in more than 500 Whole Foods Market stores in the United States, several Amazon stores and more than 150 third-party locations. Those venues included stadiums, airports, fitness centers, convenience stores and other businesses. The figures describe the launch-era footprint; they are not current availability figures.
Amazon had previously outlined uses at Whole Foods involving payment, Prime benefits and loyalty programs, as well as expansion to more than 500 U.S. stores (Amazon’s expansion announcement).

Privacy, security and account linkage
Amazon said palm images captured through the app were encrypted and sent to a secure Amazon One domain in AWS, were not downloadable or saved to the phone, and were protected by spoof-detection layers. It also said Amazon One devices did not retain raw palm images locally and that the system created a palm signature for matching. Amazon’s security overview is available at Amazon’s Amazon One explainer and AWS’s product page.
Those statements should be read narrowly. They do not establish that Amazon never stored any palm image in the cloud, that biometric data could not be compromised or that all data was deleted when the service ended. A biometric credential is also harder to replace than a card number or password.

“Wallet-free” did not necessarily mean unlinked
Whole Foods says that when an Amazon One account was linked to an Amazon.com account, a transaction could apply Prime savings, connect the purchase to Amazon order history and create a digital receipt. In other words, paying with a palm could still associate the transaction with an identifiable Amazon profile (Whole Foods customer information).
Why Amazon One is no longer a retail option
The current status is unambiguous: the AWS Amazon One FAQ says Amazon One was discontinued at retail businesses on June 3, 2026. American Express’s Amazon One terms say new card enrollment stopped on April 2, 2026, and that Amazon ended the service at participating businesses on June 3.

Some locations could remove devices before that date. Old app-store listings, Whole Foods help pages and search snippets may therefore describe a process that is no longer usable for retail checkout. The AWS notice is specifically about retail businesses; it should not automatically be treated as proof that every possible enterprise or non-retail deployment ended.
Amazon announced in January 2026 that it was closing Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and converting various locations into Whole Foods Market stores. That is relevant business context, but it is not proof that the store changes alone caused the Amazon One shutdown. A GeekWire report quoted an Amazon spokesperson attributing the decision to limited customer adoption (GeekWire’s report).

- Convenience: A palm could replace taking out a phone or wallet at a compatible location.
- Multiple uses: One identity could support payment, loyalty, entry and age verification.
- Hardware dependence: A business without an Amazon One reader could not accept it.
- Biometric exposure: Enrollment involved giving a private company a biometric identifier tied, in some configurations, to payment and an Amazon account.
- Limited portability: The system offered no benefit at merchants that never adopted the readers.
- Credential recovery: A compromised biometric characteristic cannot be replaced as easily as a card or password.
What to use instead
There is no direct palm-payment replacement that combines the same biometric payment, loyalty, access and age-verification functions. The practical choice depends on the task:
| Use case | Current option | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday in-store payment | Contactless credit or debit card | Broad acceptance without biometric enrollment |
| Phone or watch payment | Apple Pay or Google Wallet | Requires a compatible device and merchant terminal |
| Whole Foods account recognition | Whole Foods or Amazon app-based methods | Uses an app or code rather than a palm |
| Universal fallback | Physical card or cash | Less hands-free, but widely usable |
| Stadium or venue access | Venue-specific ticketing or access app | Usually limited to that venue’s system |
Bottom line
Amazon One was an ambitious biometric-checkout product: its 2024 app let shoppers enroll from home, but checkout still required a dedicated reader and could link purchases to an Amazon identity. The retail service ended on June 3, 2026, so the app is now primarily a historical reference rather than a way to pay with your palm.
