BYD’s 12.5 GWh Saudi battery deal was once the world’s largest—what it actually includes

BYD’s 2025 Saudi deal was announced as the world’s largest grid-side battery contract. Here’s the accurate breakdown of capacity, project roles, status and the newer Abu Dhabi comparison.

BYD did not announce one giant battery plant that it would own and build itself. In January 2025, BYD Energy Storage and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) signed contracts covering up to 2.5 GW / 12.5 GWh of grid-scale batteries at five Saudi sites. BYD is primarily the storage-technology supplier, while SEC, local partners and contractors handle ownership, grid integration, construction and operation. BYD called the deal the world’s largest grid-side storage project when it was announced. That description is date- and category-specific: by July 2026, Abu Dhabi’s planned solar-plus-storage project had a larger total battery component, although BYD’s contracted share there is 11.275 GWh.

The projects and their current status

The Saudi announcement combines several sites rather than describing a single facility. The clearest way to separate the projects is by capacity, technology role and evidence of completion.

Project Capacity Type BYD’s role Status supported by public announcements
Bisha, Saudi Arabia 2.6 GWh; BYD says four hours of stable power Grid-side battery storage Supplied 488 MC Cube ESS units using Blade Battery technology BYD announced grid connection on February 19, 2025
SEC five-site portfolio, Saudi Arabia Up to 2.5 GW / 12.5 GWh Five-site grid-side storage portfolio Storage-system supply, delivery and commissioning support Contracted; a complete, independently audited operating schedule for all five sites is not publicly established
Abu Dhabi round-the-clock renewable project 19 GWh storage with 5.2 GW solar Solar-plus-storage project Contracted to supply 1,644 MW / 11,275 MWh Planned and contracted; announced July 9, 2026
Elena, Chile, within Oasis de Atacama 446 MW / 3.5 GWh; 6.5 GWh cumulative platform Solar-plus-storage platform Supplied 624 MC Cube-T systems BYD announced inauguration on June 8, 2026

Sources: BYD’s Saudi and Bisha announcement, MEED reporting on the Saudi deployment, BYD’s Abu Dhabi announcement and BYD’s Elena announcement.

What BYD actually won in Saudi Arabia

The counterparty for the 12.5 GWh deal is Saudi Electricity Company. BYD’s public description covers battery-energy-storage systems and associated delivery and commissioning assistance. Industry reporting identifies Alfanar as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) or construction partner for the Saudi deployment.

That division matters. A battery manufacturer or system integrator can supply cells, containers, power-conversion equipment, controls and technical services without being the project owner, electricity buyer or general contractor. The available announcements do not establish that BYD owns the five Saudi sites, finances them, or operates them as an independent utility.

MEED describes the Saudi program as five projects with a combined rating of up to 2.5 GW and 12.5 GWh. The Saudi contract announcement itself does not prove that all of that capacity was already installed or operating. Industry coverage in 2026 linked the five SEC projects to BYD supply and Alfanar construction, but site-by-site commissioning evidence remains incomplete. See Energy-Storage.News’ deployment reporting.

Why the numbers are easy to misunderstand

GW measures power; GWh measures stored energy

Gigawatts (GW) describe the maximum rate at which a system can deliver or absorb electricity. Gigawatt-hours (GWh) describe how much energy the batteries can store. They are different attributes: 12.5 GWh is not 12.5 GW.

Dividing the Saudi portfolio’s stated 12.5 GWh by its maximum 2.5 GW power rating gives a nominal average duration of about five hours, if both headline figures apply together. Actual usable output depends on operating reserves, conversion losses, temperature, degradation and dispatch limits.

Bisha provides a concrete example

BYD says Bisha uses 488 MC Cube ESS units, each rated at 5.365 MWh, for about 2.6 GWh in total. The company describes the system as delivering four hours of stable power, implying roughly 650 MW at that duration. That is a nameplate illustration, not a guarantee of the energy available at every point in the project’s life.

Household comparisons are therefore misleading unless they specify peak demand, daily consumption, discharge duration, efficiency and reserve requirements. A battery shifts electricity; it does not create new electricity.

What “grid-side” storage does

Grid-side, or grid-scale, batteries connect to transmission or distribution networks rather than serving only one building. Depending on interconnection and market rules, they can:

  • Move solar energy from daylight into evening demand.
  • Provide frequency regulation and voltage support.
  • Supply capacity during high-demand periods.
  • Smooth variable renewable output.
  • Reduce congestion on constrained transmission paths.
  • Support black start or system restoration where configured and authorized.

BYD lists peak shaving, frequency modulation, voltage support, renewable integration, inertia support and black start among the functions of its energy-management systems. Those are manufacturer-described capabilities; the Saudi sites may not provide every service. Details depend on grid-operator instructions, software, market compensation and the equipment installed at each location. BYD’s description is available at its integrated-energy page.

Why Saudi Arabia is buying multi-gigawatt storage

Saudi Arabia is expanding renewable generation while its electricity system faces intense cooling demand and a pronounced evening load. Solar production is strongest during daylight, but demand often remains high after the sun sets. Batteries can charge during high-solar hours and discharge later, reducing the need to keep every conventional generator running solely for the evening ramp.

BYD’s Bisha announcement cites Saudi Arabia’s goal of generating 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. Storage can add flexibility for that build-out, but it does not replace generation on its own. The result depends on charging resources, transmission capacity, duration, degradation, interconnection design and dispatch rules.

Technology: Blade Battery, MC Cube and Haohan

Saudi equipment

For Bisha, BYD identifies its Blade Battery and MC Cube ESS containers. The company’s public material does not provide a complete bill of materials or product-generation breakdown for every site in the newer 12.5 GWh Saudi portfolio. It would be unsafe to assume that every Saudi installation uses exactly the same configuration as Bisha.

Abu Dhabi equipment

For the Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company project in Abu Dhabi, BYD says it will deploy Haohan systems. BYD gives a minimum unit capacity of 14.5 MWh and identifies a 2,710 Ah Blade Battery cell. Those are the manufacturer’s specifications; the announcement is not independent validation of safety, lifetime, cost or reliability.

How the “world’s largest” claim should be read

A superlative needs four qualifiers:

  1. Measure: energy capacity, power rating, single-site size or cumulative portfolio.
  2. Category: standalone grid-side BESS, solar-plus-storage or another hybrid.
  3. Status: announced, contracted, under construction, grid-connected, commissioned or fully operational.
  4. Date: the largest project can change as new contracts are signed.

When announced in January 2025, BYD said the 12.5 GWh Saudi contract was the world’s largest grid-side battery-storage deal. It was a five-site portfolio, not one plant. In July 2026, BYD announced an 11.275 GWh supply contract for Abu Dhabi’s planned 19 GWh battery component. The Abu Dhabi project is larger in total storage, but BYD is not supplying all 19 GWh.

Why Abu Dhabi changes the current comparison

The Abu Dhabi project, developed by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, is designed to pair 5.2 GW of solar PV with 19 GWh of batteries for round-the-clock renewable supply. BYD’s announced share is 1,644 MW / 11,275 MWh.

This is a different comparison from the Saudi claim: Abu Dhabi is a solar-plus-storage development, while the Saudi headline referred to a grid-side storage contract. Calling either one simply “the world’s largest battery” hides both the project category and the stage of delivery.

BYD’s wider storage strategy

Utility storage gives BYD a business beyond electric vehicles and places its battery, controls and integration capabilities in large infrastructure tenders. Its project list includes the 6.5 GWh cumulative Oasis de Atacama platform in Chile. BYD says the 446 MW / 3.5 GWh Elena facility within that platform was inaugurated in June 2026 using 624 MC Cube-T systems.

These projects also show why “BYD project” does not necessarily mean BYD-owned asset. Depending on the contract, BYD may provide cells, battery containers, controls, integration, commissioning support or long-term service. Ownership, revenue rights and operating responsibility belong to the project developer and contractual counterparties unless separately disclosed. BYD’s utility-scale cases are listed at https://www.bydenergy.com/en/Solutions/Utility-Scale and https://www.bydenergy.com/en/projectCases.

Practical risks behind a desert battery build-out

  • Heat and dust: enclosures, cooling, filtration and maintenance access affect performance and degradation.
  • Safety: large lithium-ion installations require thermal monitoring, fire detection, separation and emergency procedures.
  • Degradation: nameplate GWh is not the same as guaranteed usable energy over the contract term.
  • Efficiency: round-trip losses mean less energy returns to the grid than goes into charging.
  • Multi-site complexity: five locations can improve geographic coverage but increase logistics, commissioning and operating demands.
  • Commercial structure: the value of storage depends on interconnection, dispatch instructions, market rules and ancillary-service payments.

For a utility or developer evaluating a system, the important documents are the warranty, capacity-retention and availability guarantees, augmentation plan, local service coverage, fire-safety design, grid-code compliance and end-of-life arrangements—not just the headline GWh figure.

What is still not established publicly

  • The complete site list and commissioning date for each of the five Saudi projects.
  • Whether the full 12.5 GWh has been installed, grid-connected or accepted for commercial operation.
  • Operating performance, availability and degradation results.
  • Contract value, ownership structure and the revenue model for the Saudi assets.
  • Project-specific warranty, augmentation and replacement-cell terms.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BYD’s Saudi agreement was a landmark 12.5 GWh grid-storage supply contract, not proof that BYD independently built or owns the world’s largest battery plant. Bisha is the publicly announced Saudi project that reached grid connection, while the broader five-site portfolio requires cautious status language. Abu Dhabi’s planned 19 GWh solar-plus-storage project is now larger overall, although BYD’s contracted portion is 11.275 GWh.
