Walmart has discounted unlocked phones, restored devices, and carrier-specific clearance phones—but those categories are not interchangeable. The strongest apparent savings often come from restored or Marketplace listings, while the very cheapest clearance phones may be prepaid models locked to AT&T or another carrier.
Use Walmart’s Unlocked Phone Deals page, then verify the exact model, seller, condition, network bands, IMEI, and return terms before paying. A low displayed price is not proof that a phone is factory unlocked, compatible with your carrier, or genuinely cheaper after activation costs.
Quick verdict: which Walmart phone deals deserve attention?
| Shopper need | Observed Walmart example | Why consider it | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost unlocked Android | Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, 128GB, from about $132.97; displayed former price $169.99 | New-listing budget option with 5G | Entry-level performance and seller/model details still require checking |
| Restored iPhone value | Restored iPhone 14, fully unlocked, 128GB, from about $263.97 | Lower entry price for iOS and stronger hardware than a basic budget phone | Battery health, parts, warranty, and cosmetic grade may vary |
| Cheapest listed iPhone | Restored iPhone 12, carrier unlocked, 64GB, about $169; displayed former price $299.99 | Low upfront iPhone price | Older hardware and restrictive 64GB storage |
| Higher-performance Android | Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, unlocked, from about $254.16 | More performance headroom than the A16 | Confirm condition, seller, U.S. model, and warranty |
| Discounted flagship | Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, unlocked, about $709.99; displayed former price $925.88 | Premium display, cameras, performance, and S Pen features | Price and condition may reflect a Marketplace offer |
| Existing AT&T customer | AT&T Galaxy A16 5G, $49.88 from $79 | Very low upfront cost for the named carrier | Prepaid/carrier locked; not a universal unlocked-phone deal |
These prices were observed in Walmart’s indexed listings on August 16, 2026. They can change by seller, ZIP code, inventory, storage, color, condition, shipping, and time. “Former price” is Walmart’s displayed comparison price, not proof of the phone’s lowest historical or current market price.
What “unlocked” actually means
Factory unlocked
The phone was sold without a carrier software lock. This is generally the least complicated choice, but you still need the exact U.S. model’s bands and carrier certification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Carrier unlocked
The phone was originally tied to a carrier and later unlocked. It can be legitimate, but verify the IMEI and make sure no financing, theft report, or account restriction can cause a later block.
“Fully unlocked” or “GSM unlocked”
These are listing terms, not guarantees. “GSM unlocked” is especially incomplete for modern U.S. service: compatibility also depends on LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, eSIM, Wi-Fi calling, and carrier approval.
International version
An imported model may lack U.S. bands, eSIM, Wi-Fi calling, regulatory certification, or manufacturer warranty. The model number matters more than a title saying “unlocked” or “US compatible.”
Prepaid and restored status
Prepaid describes a service arrangement and often a carrier lock; it does not mean unlocked. Restored or refurbished describes condition and testing, not network status. Walmart advises checking the phone’s specific model and supported bands before purchase.
Where to search on Walmart
- Start with Walmart’s Unlocked Phone Deals page.
- Browse the broader Unlocked Phones category for more models and sellers.
- Use the cell-phone clearance page, but treat it as a mixed inventory page.
- Apply filters for unlocked, clearance or rollback, restored/refurbished, brand, operating system, 4G/5G, price, seller, rating, and in-store availability.
Clearance pages can combine unlocked phones, prepaid phones, phones sold with plans, and carrier-specific inventory. “Clearance” is therefore a price label, not an unlock-status filter.
How to read Walmart’s deal labels
- Clearance or rollback: A current merchandising label; it does not establish the phone’s condition or network status.
- Was/now pricing: Compare the exact model, storage, seller, and condition with current manufacturer and retailer prices.
- Restored/refurbished: A previously owned or returned device. “Restored: Like New” does not specify battery health, original parts, or a manufacturer warranty.
- Marketplace: A third-party offer with its own condition description, warranty, fulfillment, and return terms.
- Prepaid/no contract: May still require activation and remain locked to the named carrier. No contract does not mean unlocked.
Deal categories and their trade-offs
New unlocked phones
Choose new when a modest price difference buys lower failure risk, a full manufacturer warranty, current software support, and simpler returns. Savings are usually smaller than with restored phones.

Restored or refurbished unlocked phones
These can be excellent for iPhone shoppers who value older flagship hardware, cameras, and iOS at a lower entry price. Check the individual listing for battery information, cosmetic grade, replacement parts, accessories, seller warranty, and return window. A restored phone is not equivalent to new.
Carrier-locked prepaid clearance
A $49.88 AT&T Galaxy A16 can make sense for an existing AT&T customer who understands activation and unlocking rules. It is a poor comparison with a $132.97 unlocked A16 if you intend to use Verizon, T-Mobile, an MVNO, or an international SIM immediately.

Observed Walmart unlocked-phone examples
The following are time-sensitive examples, not a permanent recommended list.

| Galaxy S24 Ultra, 256GB | About $709.99; displayed former price $925.88 | Unlocked listing; seller/condition must be checked | Marketplace terms and whether it is new or restored |
Choose by shopper type
Lowest-risk purchase
Prefer a new, U.S.-model, factory-unlocked phone sold by Walmart or a clearly identified authorized seller. Confirm the manufacturer warranty before checkout.
Cheapest iPhone
Compare the restored iPhone 12, 14, and 15 listings by total cost, battery, storage, seller warranty, and return protection—not by the displayed markdown alone. A 64GB phone can become frustrating when photos, video, and apps consume available space.

Android performance per dollar
The Galaxy S24 FE is a different performance tier from the entry-level A16. Select the A16 for basic communication, streaming, navigation, and low cost; select the S24 FE or S24 Ultra when cameras, gaming, display quality, or long-term performance justify the extra spend.
Travel use
Prioritize factory-unlocked status, broad U.S. and international bands, physical-SIM and eSIM flexibility, dual-SIM support, and carrier-independent activation. Verify the exact model rather than relying on the product family name.
Verification checklist before checkout
- Open the full product page, not just the category card.
- Look for “Unlocked,” “Factory Unlocked,” or “Fully Unlocked.” Treat AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Tracfone, Walmart Family Mobile, “prepaid,” and “requires activation” as warning terms.
- Record the exact model number, storage, U.S. or international designation, SIM/eSIM configuration, seller, condition, warranty, and fulfillment method.
- Run the model through your intended carrier’s compatibility checker. If available, obtain the IMEI and have the carrier check eligibility.
- Read return terms before opening or activating the phone.
Walmart’s unlocked-phone deals page specifically directs shoppers to check network compatibility and supported bands. An unlocked label only removes a software restriction; it cannot add missing radio hardware or carrier certification.
Tests to perform immediately after delivery
- Photograph the package and device condition.
- Match the model number and storage to the listing.
- Confirm there is no activation lock: an iPhone must not be tied to another Apple Account, and an Android phone must not trigger the previous owner’s Google protection after reset.
- Check the IMEI with the intended carrier or a reputable device-checking service for blacklist or financing issues.
- Test SIM/eSIM activation, calls, SMS, mobile data, LTE, advertised 5G, Wi-Fi calling, GPS, cameras, charging, speakers, and microphones.
- Check battery health where the operating system provides it.
- Return promptly if the phone is locked, blacklisted, materially misrepresented, defective, or incompatible.
iPhone checks
- Go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock; the desired result is No SIM restrictions.
- Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
- Confirm Activation Lock is absent and verify eSIM support for your carrier.
Android checks
- Look for carrier-lock information in SIM or network settings.
- Confirm the exact model code and 5G/VoLTE behavior.
- After reset, verify that Google account protection does not request the former owner’s credentials.
- Check the Android version and the manufacturer’s current support policy for that exact model.
Returns, warranties, and activation risk
Walmart’s corporate policy states that opened unlocked wireless phones have a 14-day return window. Marketplace listings may have different policies and exceptions, so the product page and seller terms control. Walmart’s policy page is at corporate.walmart.com/policies.
Separate the Walmart return right from a manufacturer warranty, seller warranty, wireless-plan cancellation, activation fee, promotional credit, or SIM purchase. Do not activate a questionable phone on a long-term prepaid promotion until compatibility and unlock status are confirmed unless you accept the carrier’s terms and the risk of returning an activated device.
Calculate the real cost

Device price + tax + required activation + required service plan + accessories − immediate discounts

A $49.88 carrier phone can cost more than a $133 unlocked phone if it requires service, cannot move to your preferred carrier, or loses a promotional credit when canceled. Compare total ownership cost, not the largest percentage-off label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure modes
- International model: Missing U.S. bands, eSIM, Wi-Fi calling, warranty, or regulatory support.
- Blacklisted or financed device: A phone can appear unlocked and later be blocked after a theft, loss, unpaid balance, or fraud report.
- Activation lock: The prior owner failed to remove an Apple Account or Google account.
- eSIM-only hardware: Your carrier may not support eSIM transfer or activation.
- 4G-only bargain: It may work today but lacks 5G and may be a poor long-term choice where LTE capacity is limited.
- Low-rating anomaly: Some restored listings show roughly 3.7–3.9 stars despite many reviews. Read recent complaints about battery, locks, counterfeit parts, and returns instead of relying on the “Like New” label.
- Local-stock assumption: Online clearance availability does not prove the same model is in your nearby store.
Optional service check for an unlocked phone
If you already own or purchase a compatible unlocked phone, MobileX provides an IMEI compatibility checker and says its service supports VoLTE-friendly unlocked 5G and 4G LTE phones at walmart.mymobilex.com. Service features, roaming, family pricing, international options, and support may not match those of every major carrier, so evaluate the plan separately from the phone purchase.
Are Walmart clearance unlocked phones worth it?
Yes when the listing is genuinely unlocked, uses a compatible U.S. model, comes from a credible seller, remains a good value after condition and activation costs, and has clear return protection. Skip it when the phone is carrier locked, international, activation-dependent, ambiguously described, or discounted only against an unhelpful comparison price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Walmart clearance phones unlocked?
Not necessarily. Walmart’s clearance inventory mixes unlocked phones with carrier-specific prepaid devices, phones sold with plans, and Marketplace offers. Check the individual listing for unlock status and model number.
What is the difference between restored and refurbished?
Both describe condition rather than network status. A restored or refurbished phone was previously owned or returned and may have variable battery health, parts, cosmetic grading, warranty, and accessories.
Can an unlocked Walmart phone work on Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile?
Possibly, but the exact model must support the carrier’s LTE/5G bands, VoLTE, eSIM or SIM requirements, Wi-Fi calling, and IMEI eligibility. Unlocked does not guarantee compatibility.

How do I check an iPhone’s carrier lock?
Open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the iPhone is not carrier locked. Also check for Activation Lock and battery health.
Can I return an opened unlocked phone?
Walmart states that opened unlocked wireless phones have a 14-day return window. Marketplace listings can have different policies and exceptions, so confirm the seller’s terms before activation.
Is a prepaid phone the same as an unlocked phone?
No. A prepaid phone may be locked to its carrier even when sold without a contract. Unlocking can depend on the carrier’s time, payment, account, and service rules.
Should I buy an older iPhone or a new budget Android?
An older restored iPhone may offer better cameras and performance, while a new budget Android may provide a newer battery and warranty. Compare storage, battery, software-support expectations, seller protection, and total cost.
How can I avoid a blacklisted or activation-locked phone?
Obtain and check the IMEI when possible, verify Apple or Google account removal, test calls and data immediately, and use the return window if the phone is blocked, locked, or misrepresented.
