The platform connects buyers with third-party businesses, so the real risk depends on the seller, product, payment method, delivery route and your country’s rules. It is usually reasonable for inexpensive, non-critical goods. It is a poor choice for products where authenticity, electrical safety, fast delivery, local returns or warranty service matter.
On July 20, 2026, the European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for failures involving risks from illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products. That is serious evidence of a platform-level compliance problem, not proof that every order is fraudulent. European Commission decision

What AliExpress is—and what it is not
AliExpress is a business-to-consumer marketplace. Its service connects buyers with business sellers; the company shown in the marketplace is not necessarily the manufacturer, importer, warehouse operator or direct seller of the item. For registered U.S. buyers, the privacy policy identifies AliExpress E-Commerce One Pte. Ltd. as the contracting entity. AliExpress privacy policy
That distinction matters. “AliExpress is a real company” does not mean that every store is legitimate, every brand claim is authentic, or every product meets your country’s safety standards. A listing may involve:

- an independent store as the seller;
- a separate manufacturer or brand;
- a local or overseas fulfillment warehouse;
- a third-party carrier; and
- a payment processor and your card issuer.
What “safe” means when you shop there
Payment safety
Use the genuine AliExpress website or official app. A seller should never need you to pay by bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift card, WhatsApp, Telegram, email link or another external method. The FTC recommends credit cards for online purchases because they may provide dispute rights when merchandise is not delivered, is wrong, damaged or fraudulent. FTC online-shopping guidance
A card dispute is a separate remedy, not a guaranteed refund. Check your issuer’s deadline and preserve your order records.
Account and data safety
- Use a unique password and enable available multifactor or other account-security controls.
- Ignore unsolicited “customs,” “delivery” or “refund” links. Type the official address yourself.
- Never send a seller a one-time passcode, full card details or unnecessary identity documents.
- Keep messages and payment inside AliExpress.
AliExpress says it uses affiliates and service providers for payments, customs support and risk control, and that information may be accessed across jurisdictions. Read the policy for your region rather than assuming data is either completely private or inherently unsafe. Privacy policy
Product safety
A secure checkout cannot make a dangerous product safe. The highest-risk categories include mains-powered chargers and power strips, batteries, heaters, protective equipment, automotive and bicycle safety parts, cosmetics, supplements, medical devices, lasers, children’s products and counterfeit branded electronics.
The European Commission’s 2026 action specifically addressed illegal, unsafe and counterfeit-product risks. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) warns that counterfeit goods can cause injury or death and that online reviews may be manipulated. CBP counterfeit-goods guidance

Delivery and customs
International orders can be delayed, mis-tracked, misdeclared, marked delivered incorrectly or held or seized. CBP says it generally cannot track ordinary consumer packages or mediate the overseas seller-consumer agreement; contact the seller and carrier first. CBP package guidance
Refund and warranty safety
AliExpress buyer protection, a seller’s voluntary return promise, a “free returns” label, a manufacturer warranty, statutory rights and a card chargeback are different protections. A seller-only warranty may be difficult to enforce across borders.
Which purchases are sensible?

How to judge a seller and listing
Seller checks
- Store age, completed orders and recent reviews for the exact product or variant.
- Buyer photographs and videos, with recurring complaints treated as warnings.
- Consistent answers to technical questions.
- Evidence of brand authorization, if the listing claims to be official.
- Local or regional return address and clearly stated shipping origin.
Listing red flags
- Brand names inserted into generic titles or “original” claims without verifiable authorization.
- Copied photographs, contradictory specifications or many unclear variants.
- Safety marks shown only as artwork.
- Reviews depicting a different product.
- A seller asking you to confirm receipt, close a dispute or pay extra outside the platform.
An unusually low price can reflect a generic product, refurbished stock, missing accessories, regional version, false specification or counterfeit. It is not proof of fraud, but it should lower your expectations.
Counterfeit risk deserves special attention
Counterfeits can look convincing, use copied images and accumulate manipulated reviews. They may contain inferior components or materials and can be detained by customs. Do not intentionally buy counterfeit goods or assume a badge, store name or high review count proves authorization.
- Check the brand’s own authorized-retailer directory.
- Compare model numbers and regional versions.
- Ask the manufacturer whether the AliExpress store and warranty are authorized.
- Prefer a retailer that accepts domestic returns.
Product categories needing extra caution
Electronics
Watch for fake capacity claims, counterfeit chips, used items described as new, incorrect voltage or plugs, missing certifications, incompatible firmware and no practical warranty. Low-voltage accessories may be tolerable when failure is merely inconvenient; avoid unverified mains equipment, chargers, batteries and power supplies.

Cosmetics, supplements and medical products
Ingredient accuracy, contamination, storage, labeling and regulatory compliance may be impossible to establish. Use a regulated local or authorized source.
Children’s products and safety equipment
Do not rely solely on a listing’s certification claim for toys, baby products, helmets, child seats, airbags, brake parts or protective gear. Failure can cause injury.
Clothing and household goods
These are lower-stakes, but expect inaccurate sizing, material or color differences, poor finishing and expensive international returns.
U.S. customs and import costs in 2026
CBP guidance says duty-free de minimis treatment for shipments valued at or below $800 was suspended effective August 29, 2025, subject to stated exceptions. Treatment depends on origin, transport method, classification, declared value and current exemptions. CBP de minimis guidance
Do not confuse AliExpress checkout tax or shipping with import duty, carrier brokerage, handling charges or state sales tax. Postal and non-postal shipments can follow different entry procedures, and imported goods may be restricted, held or seized. How to pay and communicate safely
- Prefer a credit card. A payment service such as PayPal can add another dispute route only when the transaction qualifies under its current terms: PayPal.
- Use a debit card only after checking how your issuer handles disputes.
- Never use bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards or an external payment link merely because a seller requests it. The FTC lists these as common hard-to-reverse scam payment methods. FTC payment-scam alert
- Keep every conversation in the platform and do not share one-time codes or install remote-access software.
How AliExpress buyer protection works
Buyer protection is a conditional, evidence-based dispute process. Coverage depends on the order, seller, transaction and applicable policy; deadlines, evidence, partial refunds and returns can all matter. AliExpress’s terms say protection applies to covered transactions and may depend on seller participation. EU, EEA and UK statutory rights remain separate from the platform plan. - Photograph or video the unopened package, label, seals and item on arrival.
- Test it promptly within the order’s displayed protection or return period.
- Save the listing, selected variant, specifications, messages, invoice, tracking and payment record.
- Open the order’s return/refund or dispute workflow before its displayed deadline.
- Choose the accurate reason: non-delivery, damage, defect, counterfeit, missing parts or not as described.
- Upload clear evidence in the requested format.
- Do not let a seller’s promise cause the deadline to expire or close a dispute prematurely.
- Return an item only after platform instructions or a required label are provided.
- If necessary, contact your card issuer or payment provider while its dispute deadline remains open.
Menu names and deadlines vary by country and change over time; use the live website or app rather than relying on a fixed path.

The package never arrives
Check the carrier’s official tracking site and whether the delivery scan matches your address. Contact the seller, then file a non-delivery claim before the displayed deadline. If told it is “held by customs,” request the carrier name and documentation; that phrase alone does not prove CBP has it.
The item is wrong, damaged or defective
Preserve packaging. Photograph model and serial numbers, defects and the listing comparison. An unboxing recording is especially useful for expensive or fragile goods. File through the platform and escalate to the card issuer if needed.
The item appears counterfeit
Stop using a potentially unsafe product. Save screenshots, compare the item with manufacturer information, ask the brand about authorization, report the listing and notify your payment provider. Serious safety or counterfeit concerns can also be reported to the relevant consumer-protection or customs authority.

A seller requests extra money
Treat unexpected “customs,” insurance, release or shipping fees as suspicious until independently verified through the official carrier or platform. Never use a link or phone number supplied only in an unsolicited message.
Regional rights and enforcement
EU/EEA/UK terms updated in 2026 describe, subject to applicable conditions, a 14-day withdrawal right and at least a two-year legal-conformity guarantee. Those statutory rights do not apply worldwide and do not replace the platform process. Applicable terms

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AliExpress is best treated as a marketplace for low-stakes bargains, not as a conventional retailer that guarantees every seller or product. Use a credit card, keep all communication on-platform, verify the seller and listing, document delivery, and avoid safety-critical, regulated, counterfeit-sensitive or time-critical purchases. Choose a local or authorized retailer when authenticity, compliance, fast returns or warranty support is worth more than the lowest price.
