Spirit Airlines ceased flight operations on May 2, 2026, so travelers cannot currently buy baggage for a new Spirit flight. For legacy bookings, refunds, claims, or understanding Spirit’s former ultra-low-cost model, the key rule was simple: one personal item meeting 18 × 14 × 8 inches was free; larger carry-ons and checked bags were paid additions whose prices varied by route, fare, status and purchase timing.
Is Spirit Airlines still flying?
No. Spirit stopped operating flights on May 2, 2026, according to Kayak and the airline’s encyclopedia record. Consequently, there is no current Spirit itinerary for which a traveler can newly purchase a carry-on or checked bag. The rules below are historical guidance for a legacy reservation, a baggage-charge dispute, a refund request or a claim involving a past flight.
What baggage was free on Spirit?
One under-seat personal item
Spirit’s Contract of Carriage 26, updated April 30, 2026, allowed one personal item without a standard baggage charge. The maximum dimensions were 18 × 14 × 8 inches (45 × 35 × 20 cm), including handles and wheels. It had to fit under the seat in front of you.
A bag that exceeded any of those dimensions was not treated as the free allowance merely because it was soft-sided or lightly packed. The practical way to remain within the allowance was to use an underseat bag whose exterior measurements, including hardware, stayed at or below all three limits.

Did Spirit charge for a carry-on?
Historically, yes. A bag intended for the overhead bin was a paid carry-on unless a specific exception applied. Published historical summaries used a maximum carry-on size of 22 × 18 × 10 inches; the applicable reservation and contract version controlled for a particular itinerary.
Spirit’s contract stated that standard charges applied to checked items and to carry-ons that exceeded personal-item dimensions, except where a special charge was listed. The amount was not one universal fee. It could change with the route, fare, membership or status and the point at which the bag was added.

How Spirit’s historical checked-bag fees worked
Prices depended on when and where you added the bag
Spirit generally priced baggage lowest when it was added during the initial booking process. Adding it later online, at airport check-in or at the gate could cost more. The exact amount also varied by route, fare type and any applicable membership or status benefit, so a single dollar figure would be misleading.

Checked-bag size and weight limits
Standard reference limits
The contemporaneous Spirit fee guide documented a standard checked-bag maximum of 50 pounds (22.6 kg) and 62 linear inches (158 cm). Linear inches mean length + width + height. Measure the outside of the packed bag, including protruding parts where the applicable rule requires them.
Overweight and oversized charges
Spirit’s Contract of Carriage 26 warned that size and weight charges could apply unless an overweight or oversized charge was specifically waived. A bag within the 62-linear-inch limit could still incur a surcharge if it exceeded 50 pounds, and a lighter bag could still be charged for being too large. Sports equipment, musical instruments and other special items had separate handling rules.

Military and other possible exceptions
Active-duty military allowance
Upgraded Points documented a historical allowance for eligible active-duty military travelers of two checked bags plus one carry-on, in addition to the personal item. Eligibility, required documentation and the precise contract version matter; a past traveler should verify those details against the reservation and the contract in effect on the travel date before disputing a charge.
Status or membership benefits
Spirit’s historical pricing also varied by membership and status. Do not assume that a benefit applied to every itinerary or every bag type; the booking record and applicable contract terms determine what was included.

How to avoid Spirit baggage fees in a legacy case
- Use the free allowance: Choose an underseat personal-item bag no larger than 18 × 14 × 8 inches, counting handles and wheels.
- Measure after packing: Soft luggage can bulge past its advertised dimensions. Check all three exterior measurements with the bag full.
- Add paid baggage as early as possible: Historically, initial booking was generally less expensive than online check-in, the airport counter or the gate.
- Weigh checked luggage: Keep a standard bag at or below 50 pounds and check its total linear dimensions against the 62-inch reference limit.
- Check exceptions before paying: Review the fare, route, membership or status and, if relevant, military eligibility and documentation.
- Keep records: Save the confirmation, baggage receipt, date of purchase and photos or measurements if you are seeking a refund or challenging a charge.
What to do about a past Spirit baggage charge
Because Spirit no longer operates flights, a new baggage purchase is not an option. For a legacy matter, start with the itinerary’s confirmation and receipt: identify the flight date, route, bag type, purchase timing and the contract version referenced on the reservation. Then compare the charge with the allowance and any documented exception that applied on that date. Keep the supporting records together for the airline, card issuer, travel agency or other entity handling the refund or claim.
Bottom line on Spirit baggage fees
Spirit’s historical model made the base fare only part of the trip cost. One correctly sized 18 × 14 × 8-inch personal item was free; overhead-bin carry-ons and checked bags generally cost extra, with variable pricing and possible oversize or overweight surcharges.
