Amazon Could Avoid Hiring More Than 600,000 Workers Through Robotics by 2033, Report Says

A New York Times investigation described Amazon projections for avoiding more than 600,000 future U.S. hires through automation by 2033—not an announced plan to fire 600,000 current workers.

Short answer: Amazon has not announced that it will immediately fire or directly replace 600,000 current employees with robots. The figure comes from internal documents reviewed by The New York Times that reportedly estimated automation could let Amazon avoid hiring more than 600,000 U.S. workers by 2033 as sales grow. That is a forecast about future staffing needs, not evidence of a confirmed mass layoff. The same documents reportedly included a robotics-team goal of automating 75% of operations, while Amazon says the material is incomplete and does not represent its overall hiring strategy.

What the 600,000 figure actually means

The New York Times investigation, published October 21, 2025, described internal Amazon planning documents and interviews with people familiar with the company’s automation plans. The documents reportedly modeled a future in which Amazon sells about twice as many products by 2033 without adding U.S. employees at the same rate. Under that higher-headcount growth scenario, automation could allow the company to avoid hiring more than 600,000 workers.

That wording matters. “Avoided hires” are people Amazon might otherwise have employed as its business expanded. They are not 600,000 existing employees identified for termination. Automation can also reduce the number of workers needed in a facility, allow growth without proportional hiring, or replace particular tasks while leaving the broader job in place.

Figure What it represents Status
More than 600,000 U.S. workers by 2033 Potential hires avoided under a projected automation and sales-growth scenario Reported projection from internal documents, not a layoff announcement
About 160,000 U.S. hires by 2027 Near-term hiring that automation could reportedly avoid Internal estimate, not a verified outcome
30 cents per item Projected reduction in fulfillment cost tied to the reported 2027 estimate Internal projection
75% of operations Reported eventual automation goal of Amazon’s robotics organization Team target reported by the Times, not a confirmed company-wide result

The underlying report and its figures are available in the archived New York Times article at archive.ph/CqcMc.

What the internal documents reportedly said

A flatter hiring curve

Amazon’s automation organization reportedly expected robotics to flatten the company’s hiring curve over the following decade. The premise was that productivity gains would support substantially higher sales without a matching increase in warehouse headcount.

A 2027 estimate

The documents reportedly estimated that automation could avoid approximately 160,000 U.S. hires by 2027 and reduce fulfillment costs by roughly 30 cents per item. Those numbers are planning estimates, not independently verified savings or jobs already eliminated.

A 75% automation ambition

The robotics team reportedly set an eventual goal of automating 75% of Amazon’s operations. “Operations” could mean tasks, workflow steps, package-handling activity, facility processes, operating hours, or a combination of physical and software systems. It does not mean that 75% of Amazon employees would automatically disappear. A highly automated building can still require people for maintenance, supervision, quality control, safety, exception handling and inventory decisions.

Working papers versus an approved workforce plan

The reported materials included working papers and documents produced by the robotics organization. They should not be treated as a single finalized, company-wide headcount commitment. The report also described internal planning about managing public and community reaction where automation might reduce staffing.

Amazon’s official response

Amazon disputed the broad interpretation of the documents. The company said they were incomplete and did not represent its overall hiring strategy. A spokesperson said the 600,000 figure came from a document produced by one team that was not responsible for company-wide hiring decisions; that response was also reported by The Independent.

Amazon publicly frames robotics as a way to assist employees, improve safety and increase efficiency. It says automation has created technical and maintenance work and that it continues to announce hiring and job-creation initiatives while installing robots. Amazon’s own operations announcement says more than 700,000 employees have been upskilled through training programs, a company-reported figure that does not establish that every worker displaced by automation receives an equivalent job or wage. See Amazon’s robotics announcement.

Amazon also reported adding more than 800,000 U.S. jobs over the previous decade in its 2025 economic-impact materials. That is Amazon’s figure and should be read as a company claim, not an independent audit: Amazon economic-impact report 2025.

How many robots does Amazon have?

As of June 30, 2025, Amazon said it had deployed more than one million robots. The fleet includes specialized mobile robots, robotic arms and other systems for moving inventory, stowing, picking, sorting and transporting goods inside fulfillment facilities. It is not a fleet of one million humanoid robots capable of performing every warehouse job.

Amazon also described DeepFleet, an AI model intended to coordinate robot movements. Amazon said DeepFleet improved robot travel efficiency by 10%; that is a company-reported result, not an independently audited benchmark. The company presented Vulcan as a system that uses sight and touch to assist with difficult warehouse tasks. Details appear in Amazon’s announcement and its SEC filing at aboutamazon.com and sec.gov.

Which work is most exposed to automation?

Automation usually targets tasks before it eliminates entire occupations. Amazon has publicly described robots handling the following activities:

  • Moving shelves, totes and inventory within a fulfillment center
  • Conveying and sorting parcels
  • Repetitive picking and placing
  • Stowing goods and handling cartons
  • Routine scanning and inventory movement
  • Software-supported scheduling, monitoring and some supervisory functions

Amazon’s description of these systems is summarized in its robotics coverage at aboutamazon.com.

Work that remains difficult

Machines still struggle with damaged, wet, tangled, fragile or unusually shaped items and with unpredictable warehouse conditions. People are needed for exception processing, repairs, maintenance, safety response, quality control, troubleshooting production stoppages and decisions that require context. An Associated Press explainer described the system as human-machine collaboration, with workers managing exceptions and maintaining equipment.

Last-mile delivery in complex human environments is also less structured than moving a tote along a controlled warehouse route. As a result, higher robot use can change a job’s tasks without making the entire occupation obsolete.

Why “75% automation” does not equal 75% fewer employees

An automation percentage can measure workflow steps, package-handling activity, throughput or operating time rather than people. A facility might automate most movement while retaining staff to monitor systems, repair equipment, handle exceptions, control inventory and respond to safety incidents. The 75% figure comes from documents attributed to Amazon’s robotics team, not from a verified company-wide employment result.

Robot counts have a similar limitation. One robot may assist several workers, replace one repetitive task, or require operators and maintenance specialists. Counting machines therefore cannot be converted directly into “worker equivalents.”

Is Amazon planning layoffs or a hiring freeze?

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Amazon’s reported strategy is intended to reduce future hiring requirements. It does not establish a company-wide order to terminate 600,000 current workers. Individual sites could reduce staffing through attrition, slower replacement hiring, redesign or expansion into more automated facilities even without a single mass-layoff announcement. Conversely, overall employment could still rise if sales grow faster than automation reduces labor per package.

Why Amazon is investing in automation

  • Growth without proportional headcount: More sales can be processed without adding workers at the same rate.
  • Lower unit costs: The reported internal estimate projected about 30 cents less fulfillment cost per item; Morgan Stanley separately estimated $2 billion to $4 billion in annual savings beginning in 2027. That outside estimate was cited by the Senate labor committee and is not Amazon guidance: Senate HELP Committee statement.
  • Throughput and consistency: Automated movement can operate continuously and reduce variation in repetitive processes.
  • Labor availability: Fewer entry-level hires may reduce exposure to turnover and local labor shortages.
  • Ergonomics: Amazon says robots can reduce walking and repetitive physical work, although independent safety outcomes require separate evidence.

The business case depends on robot uptime, maintenance, charging, software recovery, capital and energy costs, facility redesign and local wages. Older buildings may be harder to automate than newly designed sites, and a high exception rate can reduce expected savings.

What automation could mean for workers and communities

Fewer entry-level openings

A facility may need fewer workers per package, reducing the number of entry-level positions available even if the site continues operating. National headcount can remain stable while a particular town loses jobs if new investment is directed to more automated locations.

More technical roles

Automation increases demand for controls technicians, electricians, software engineers, robotics maintenance and reliability specialists, and machine supervisors. Amazon says it has launched robotics and engineering apprenticeships and upskilled more than 700,000 employees; those are company-reported programs, not proof that every affected warehouse worker can move into an equivalent role. Program details are included in Amazon’s SEC exhibit at sec.gov and its operations announcement.

Job quality can change

Workers who remain may do less lifting but face fixed-position repetition, faster required rates, machine downtime, monitoring and new safety risks. Automation can shift risk rather than remove it. Retraining may also require relocation, different schedules or credentials that are not equally accessible.

Local economic effects

Communities can experience reduced hiring, slower wage growth or lower tax and spending effects even if Amazon’s national workforce grows. The relevant evidence is site-level staffing, facility design and job postings—not a single national robot count.

How to judge whether the projection comes true

  1. Track annual headcount: Compare Amazon’s reported U.S. employment with sales and package volume.
  2. Watch new facilities: Look for staffing plans, automation specifications and whether new buildings replace or supplement older sites.
  3. Compare job postings: Monitor warehouse roles against maintenance, controls, software and reliability positions.
  4. Check performance evidence: Distinguish company claims about uptime, throughput and savings from independent labor and safety data.
  5. Follow worker outcomes: Look for documented redeployment, apprenticeship completion, wages and locations—not just enrollment totals.
  6. Separate attrition from layoffs: A lower workforce can result from unfilled vacancies, transfers or turnover without a mass termination event.

Demand is another key variable. If sales rise faster than automation improves productivity, Amazon could add workers overall while still reducing labor required per package.

What the evidence establishes now

Amazon is clearly pursuing large-scale robotics. It reported more than one million deployed robots by June 2025 and describes systems for inventory movement, picking, stowing, sorting and coordination. Internal documents reviewed by The New York Times reportedly projected that this effort could avoid more than 600,000 U.S. hires by 2033, with a smaller 2027 estimate and an eventual 75% automation goal.

Those projections are not completed job losses, a deadline or an approved company-wide workforce plan. Amazon’s denial that the documents represent its overall hiring strategy leaves the scope and timetable unverified. The most accurate description is a long-term estimate of reduced future hiring as automation handles more warehouse work—not a confirmed plan to fire 600,000 current employees.
