The useful lesson for your budget is how to judge a sub-$50 tech deal: compare the current price with recent selling prices, check the exact configuration, and include subscriptions, accessories, shipping and compatibility in the total cost.
What the 2024 roundup actually covered
Engadget’s October 2024 article focused on technology products priced below $50 during the final hours of Prime Big Deal Days. Its selections drew on product testing, existing buying guides and observed price history rather than simply sorting by the largest advertised percentage discount. Amazon’s reference “was” price is not automatically a recent market price. A 50% headline discount can still be an ordinary sale, so treat the figures below as dated examples, not promises of current savings.

The original “under $25” section also contained an item at $29.99, so enforce the actual ceiling when rebuilding a list: under $50 means a final item price below $50 before tax; $49.99 qualifies, while $50 does not.
How to decide whether a sub-$50 deal is genuinely good
1. Check the real price, not just the percentage
Record the displayed price and compare it with a recent price-history record. “Lowest price Engadget had tracked” is a historical, attributed observation—not proof of an all-time low today. Confirm that the reference price is not merely a manufacturer list price.

2. Calculate the checkout price
- Identify whether the price is Prime-only and compare the nonmember price where Amazon shows it.
- Clip any on-page coupon; a coupon-adjusted price is not automatic and may be account-specific.
- Check shipping, tax, minimum quantities and the exact color, size, storage capacity or bundle.
- Confirm the seller, fulfillment method and delivery date.
3. Include ownership costs
Cameras can reserve recording, detection or cloud features for a subscription. Trackers may need a holder. A cable is not a charger, and a smart bulb or plug may require a compatible app, Wi-Fi network or hub. A cheap device with expensive proprietary accessories can cost more than a slightly pricier alternative.
4. Match the ecosystem
- AirTag is intended for iPhone users; Galaxy SmartTag2 is primarily for Galaxy-device owners.
- Echo, Fire TV, Ring and Blink are most convenient in Alexa households, but Alexa compatibility does not mean Apple Home or Google Home compatibility.
- Kasa and Meross models vary; verify current Matter, Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa support for the exact model.
- Roku is a platform-neutral streaming alternative to Fire TV, with different interface, advertising and remote features.
5. Check the product generation
The Echo Buds (2023), Fire TV Stick Lite, Amazfit Band 7 and iPhone 16 accessories in the 2024 list may still be useful, but an older model is not automatically a bargain. Compare support, software updates, accessory compatibility and the price of the current replacement.

Common traps in the historical examples
Bundles
The Echo, Echo Spot and Echo Show bundles included smart bulbs; judge whether you need both components. The Blink Outdoor 4 bundle combines cameras, but storage and advanced features can still depend on the Blink ecosystem and plan.
Security devices
Ring and Blink products differ in mounting, power and storage. The Blink Video Doorbell may need hardwiring or a Sync Module for particular setups, while camera subscriptions can affect recording and detection. Confirm the feature that matters before treating the headline price as complete.

Storage and accessories
A Switch microSD card is unnecessary if your existing storage is sufficient. AirTag ownership may require a holder, and USB-C cables do not include a power adapter unless the listing says so.

- Open the live Amazon listing and note the price and time in your region.
- Record Prime, coupon, code, quantity and configuration requirements.
- Verify seller, fulfillment, shipping date and geographic availability.
- Compare with recent price history and the nearest credible alternative.
- Check model number, release generation, warranty, subscriptions and required accessories.
- Recheck immediately before checkout; deals can end early because of inventory limits or a changed seller.

What this means for a personal budget
A $13 plug, $24.99 earbuds or $49.99 camera is only a bargain if it replaces a planned purchase and does not create recurring costs. Set a spending limit before opening the deals page, keep a record of the final checkout total, and skip a discount that solves no defined problem. For historical context, Amazon listed U.S. Prime at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually in its 2026 event information, with a 30-day trial; eligibility and prices can change.
The Bottom Line
The October 2024 under-$50 list is useful as a historical example of disciplined deal selection, not as a live shopping list. Before buying in a future sale, verify the current price, configuration, Prime or coupon conditions, ownership costs and compatibility on the live product page.
