Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly sent employees an internal message on January 27, 2026, after two fatal shootings in Minneapolis involving federal immigration agents. He said he was “heartbroken,” expressed sympathy for affected families and communities, and urged “de-escalation.” The message was reported after Bloomberg obtained it; Apple did not publish it as a standalone public statement.
Cook’s wording acknowledged the crisis without naming the victims, ICE, Customs and Border Protection, or a specific federal policy. That distinction explains both the memo’s significance and the criticism it drew.
What Tim Cook’s memo said
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported that Cook wrote to Apple employees about “the events in Minneapolis.” CBS separately confirmed the memo’s central wording after Bloomberg obtained it. The reported message included several themes:
- Cook was heartbroken and offered prayers and sympathy to the families and communities affected.
- He called for de-escalation and appealed to dignity, respect and shared humanity.
- He referred to Apple’s existing values and praised employees’ empathy.
- He said he had had a “good conversation” with President Donald Trump and had shared his views, without explaining what those views were or what, if anything, followed from the discussion.
- He reassured employees that people at Apple care about events beyond the company.
The full text circulated in media reports, including AppleInsider’s account of the reported memo. It should be understood as an internal message reported by journalists, not as an Apple newsroom release.

Which Minneapolis shootings were connected to the message?
Cook did not reportedly name either victim. The memo’s connection to two January killings comes from its timing and the surrounding reporting.
| Date | Victim and reported circumstances | How it relates to the memo |
|---|---|---|
| January 7, 2026 | Renée Good, 37, was fatally shot in Minneapolis during a confrontation involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, according to reporting cited by Reuters and congressional records. | Her death formed part of the Minneapolis events discussed in coverage of Cook’s message. |
| January 24, 2026 | Alex Pretti, 37, an intensive-care nurse and Veterans Affairs employee, was fatally shot by federal agents, according to Bloomberg and Reuters reporting. Accounts of the encounter and use of force remained contested and should be attributed to the relevant authorities, witnesses, video or investigations. | The shooting immediately preceded Cook’s message and intensified public and employee pressure on technology companies. |
Reuters’ timeline and reporting on the federal operation are summarized in this report. Calling these “ICE shootings” can be imprecise: reports distinguish Good’s case, involving an ICE agent, from Pretti’s case, involving federal agents or Border Patrol personnel.
Why the memo became news
The White House screening
Cook attended a private White House screening of Melania on January 24, the same day Pretti was killed. Critics pointed to that proximity when the internal message became public. The timing does not establish that Cook wrote the memo to repair his reputation, but it shaped how employees, journalists and outside observers interpreted its general language. 9to5Mac reported the screening context and the memo.

Pressure on technology executives
Technology workers and advocacy groups were pressing prominent CEOs to address federal immigration enforcement after the Minneapolis deaths. Apple, Amazon, AMD and Zoom executives were among those criticized in connection with the White House event, according to Axios. A separate statement from Minnesota business leaders also expressed concern but, as CBS noted, stopped short of condemning federal enforcement or requesting a particular action.

What Cook did—and did not—say
| Reported in the memo | Not stated in the reported memo |
|---|---|
| Sympathy for families and communities | Renée Good or Alex Pretti by name |
| A call for “de-escalation” | ICE, Customs and Border Protection, or another agency by name |
| Appeals to dignity, respect and shared humanity | An explicit condemnation of the federal operation |
| A statement that Cook shared his views with Trump | A demand to withdraw agents from Minneapolis |
| Praise for employee empathy and concern beyond Apple | A request for an investigation, accountability measure or policy change |
That makes “Cook expressed sympathy and urged de-escalation” a more accurate description than “Cook condemned ICE.” The memo also does not show that Cook defended Trump or that Apple adopted a formal position on the administration’s immigration operation. His conversation with Trump is mentioned, but its substance and outcome are not disclosed.

Reuters reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees that “what’s happening with ICE is going too far.” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was also reported to have addressed democratic values. Cook’s message was more conciliatory: it emphasized sympathy, shared humanity and de-escalation without naming an agency or assigning responsibility. These were not equivalent statements, and the available reporting does not show that Cook adopted Altman’s or Amodei’s position. The comparison is documented in Reuters’ report.

How the 2026 memo differed from Cook’s George Floyd message
In 2020, Cook issued a much more expansive public message after George Floyd’s killing. He discussed racism and discrimination and called for creating “a better, more just world” while Apple stores were closing amid nationwide protests. That context is described by MacRumors.
The 2026 message, by contrast, was internal, shorter and more general. It did not identify the victims or agencies involved. The difference supports a comparison of tone and specificity; it does not, by itself, prove why Cook chose different language or that political or commercial considerations determined it.

The message was reported after Bloomberg obtained it, with CBS confirming its central contents. Apple did not appear in the cited coverage to post the memo as a public corporate statement. That means readers should separate three claims: Cook sent an internal message; journalists reported what it said; and Apple formally announced a detailed immigration-policy position. The first two are supported by the reporting, while the third is not.
Bottom line
Tim Cook’s reported January 2026 memo acknowledged the Minneapolis crisis, expressed sympathy and urged de-escalation. It was linked to the January 7 killing of Renée Good and the January 24 killing of Alex Pretti, but Cook did not name either victim or the agencies involved. His reference to a conversation with President Trump supplied political context without revealing his position. The result was a deliberately broad internal appeal for calm—not a detailed public condemnation, investigation request or policy directive.
