It is an industry project hosted through the Linux Foundation’s Joint Development Foundation, created to develop an open, interoperable Ethernet-based communications stack for artificial-intelligence and high-performance-computing clusters.
The announcement did not launch a single switch, cable or cloud service. It started a technical collaboration. UEC later published Specification 1.0 on June 11, 2025, and its homepage currently advertises a 1.0.3 specification. That distinction matters: a published specification is not automatically a universally interoperable, certified product ecosystem.
What was announced in July 2023?
The founding announcement brought together cloud operators, chip and accelerator companies, networking suppliers and system providers around one objective: improve Ethernet for very large AI and HPC installations without abandoning Ethernet’s broad ecosystem.
UEC operates as a Joint Development Foundation project hosted by the Linux Foundation. Its stated mission is a complete, high-performance communications architecture covering hardware, protocols and software for AI and HPC at scale.

The nine founding members
| Company | Relevant role in the founding group |
|---|---|
| AMD | Semiconductors, accelerators and data-center platforms |
| Arista | Data-center switching and networking |
| Broadcom | Networking silicon and infrastructure components |
| Cisco | Enterprise and data-center networking |
| Eviden | Atos business supplying digital, cloud and HPC systems |
| Hewlett Packard Enterprise | Servers, HPC systems and enterprise infrastructure |
| Intel | Processors, networking and data-center infrastructure |
| Meta | Hyperscale infrastructure and large AI deployments |
| Microsoft | Cloud infrastructure and large-scale AI services |
Calling all nine companies cloud providers would be inaccurate. The group deliberately combines the parts of the supply chain needed to build and operate an AI fabric.
Why AI and HPC need a networking initiative
Distributed training and scientific computing divide work across many accelerators. Those accelerators exchange data repeatedly, often in synchronized bursts. A network can therefore limit expensive compute even when its headline link speed looks high.
- Scale: thousands of endpoints create more paths, failures and routing decisions.
- Congestion: synchronized collectives and incast can create sudden hot spots.
- Tail latency: the slowest transfers can hold up an entire group of accelerators.
- Bandwidth density: each rack and cluster must move more data without proportionally increasing overhead.
- Multipathing: traffic needs usable alternate paths rather than a single congested route.
- Observability: operators need telemetry and signaling that expose problems quickly.
UEC identifies higher scale, greater bandwidth density, multipathing, rapid congestion response and flow interdependence as specific challenges for AI and HPC networks. Its target markets include GPU scale-out networks, cloud AI and HPC at scale.
What “Ultra Ethernet” changes
Ultra Ethernet is an architecture and specification effort, not simply a faster Ethernet cable. The founding work covered several layers:

Physical and link layers
The project considers electrical and optical signaling, links, switches, NICs, optics and cables so that the physical fabric can support dense AI traffic.
Transport and congestion control
UEC addresses link-level and end-to-end transport, modern RDMA for Ethernet and IP, rapid congestion reaction, multipathing and behavior during synchronized bursts.
Software and interfaces
The scope includes application programming interfaces, data structures, host software, management and integration across the stack.
Telemetry, storage and security
Telemetry and signaling, storage traffic, provisioning, reliability and security are part of the broader design. The aim is coordinated behavior from hardware through applications rather than an isolated switch feature.

UEC says the work is intended to tune and extend Ethernet while preserving interoperability and avoiding unnecessary wholesale changes.
UEC, ordinary Ethernet and InfiniBand
| Question | Conventional Ethernet | Ultra Ethernet | InfiniBand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity | Broad family of networking technologies | UEC-defined enhancements and architecture built on Ethernet | Specialized high-performance interconnect |
| Primary optimization | Varies by implementation | AI and HPC scale-out | AI and HPC scale-out |
| Ecosystem | Very broad and familiar | Intended to retain broad, multi-vendor Ethernet choice | More specialized platform ecosystem |
| Deployment status | Mature and widespread | Specification and implementation ecosystem continue to develop | Mature specialized deployment model |
| Main buyer question | Can it meet the workload’s performance needs? | Which revision, features and tested combinations are supported? | How do specialized performance and ecosystem fit the project? |
UEC is best understood as an attempt to close Ethernet’s performance and manageability gaps for AI and HPC while retaining Ethernet’s operational familiarity and vendor choice. It is not proof that InfiniBand has been displaced, and performance or cost cannot be assumed without workload-specific testing.
What happened after formation?
The consortium expanded beyond its founding companies. UEC announced 27 new members in November 2023. On August 29, 2024, it announced 40 additional companies and said the consortium had reached 97 members since March 2024. That announcement included organizations such as Astera Labs, Cadence Design Systems, Graphcore, Lenovo, Lightmatter, Micron, NVIDIA, Pure Storage, Qualcomm, Qumulo and Rivos, along with national laboratories and other networking companies.
UEC also announced relationships involving the Open Compute Project, Storage Networking Industry Association, OpenFabrics Alliance and IEEE 802.3. Membership and these relationships show industry participation; they do not establish that every member ships a compliant or interoperable product.

On June 11, 2025, UEC released Specification 1.0. The consortium described it as an Ethernet-based stack for AI and HPC spanning NICs, switches, optics and cables, with modern RDMA, scalability, congestion management and multi-vendor integration in scope.
This was a substantial milestone: UEC moved from a founding and development effort to a public technical specification. It still did not mean that every vendor combination had passed interoperability testing, that a universal certification program was complete, or that a turnkey cloud service existed.
The official homepage currently links to a 1.0.3 specification, release notes, specification history, a 1.0 white paper and compliance information. Check the revision and release notes at ultraethernet.org before making a purchasing decision. UEC’s participation in standards-development activity also does not make UEC itself an IEEE standard.
The 1.0 announcement is available at the official UEC release.

Can companies buy Ultra Ethernet today?
There is no single “Ultra Ethernet appliance” to order. A deployment is assembled from switches, NICs, optics, cables, firmware, drivers, operating systems, communication libraries and management tools. Some products may implement UEC features, but “Ethernet,” “AI Ethernet,” “UEC-compatible” and “UEC-compliant” are not interchangeable descriptions.
Before approving a design, ask vendors for product-level evidence:
- Specification revision: identify the exact UEC release and features implemented.
- Compliance status: determine whether the claim means formal testing, a reference design or marketing alignment.
- End-to-end interoperability: verify the proposed NIC, switch, optics, cables and software combination across vendors.
- Workload benchmarks: require reproducible results that state topology, accelerator count, message sizes, software versions and workload.
- Congestion behavior: test incast, hotspots, collective operations and tail latency rather than peak bandwidth alone.
- Software dependencies: document drivers, firmware, kernels, RDMA model, libraries and orchestration requirements.
- Operations: check telemetry, provisioning, automation, troubleshooting and support contracts.
- Availability and cost: confirm what is shipping and calculate switches, adapters, optics, cabling, software, power, support and staffing.
Common ways a UEC project can disappoint
- Buying by link speed: peak bandwidth does not establish application performance.
- Assuming logos prove interoperability: consortium membership is not an end-to-end test result.
- Ignoring software: drivers, firmware and collective libraries can determine whether hardware performs as expected.
- Underestimating congestion: ordinary Ethernet tests may not reproduce synchronized AI traffic.
- Treating UEC as one product: it is a multi-layer architecture and specification effort.
- Skipping migration planning: a mixed UEC and non-UEC fabric can introduce compatibility and operational boundaries.
- Using outdated information: the July 2023 announcement should be read separately from the 2025 specification releases.
Who could benefit if the approach succeeds?
Potential beneficiaries include hyperscalers, enterprise AI operators, national laboratories, HPC centers, cloud customers running distributed training, accelerator and server vendors, switch and NIC manufacturers, optics suppliers, and observability providers. Developers could also gain access to less vendor-specific networking interfaces.
The commercial opportunity is primarily enterprise infrastructure rather than consumer networking. Membership and specification access are available through the UEC website; enterprise hardware and support are normally quote-based and must be evaluated for documented implementation and interoperability.
