Google’s Pixel 9 launch helped the company reach a record 4% share of U.S. smartphone sell-in in the third quarter of 2024, while its U.S. shipments rose 20% year over year, according to Counterpoint Research. That is a meaningful improvement for Pixel, but it is not proof that Google achieved an all-time record for phones bought by consumers or for Pixel revenue.
The distinction matters: Counterpoint’s figures measure devices shipped into distribution channels. Retail sell-through, Pixel revenue, profit and customer switching were not disclosed in the cited evidence.
What Google’s “best-ever quarter” actually measured
Counterpoint’s U.S. analysis, published October 31, 2024, found that Google reached 4% smartphone sell-in share in Q3 2024, its highest Q3 share on that measure. Google’s shipments increased 20% from a year earlier, even as the overall U.S. smartphone market declined 4%.
| Measure | What the evidence shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. sell-in share | 4% in Q3 2024, Google’s highest Q3 share to date | Installed-base share or consumer sell-through |
| U.S. shipments | Up 20% year over year | Exact Pixel 9 units purchased by end users |
| Global quarterly volume | Counterpoint separately described Q3 2024 as Google’s highest-ever global smartphone-volume quarter | A U.S.-specific sales or revenue record |
| Pixel revenue and profit | Not disclosed specifically for Pixel in the cited evidence | Whether the quarter was Google’s most profitable |
“Sell-in” is the movement of phones to carriers, retailers and other channel partners. Those shipments can precede purchases by final customers and can also reflect inventory decisions. Calling the result a record in channel share or shipment momentum is accurate; calling it a verified all-time retail-sales record goes beyond the data.

Why the Pixel 9 launch lifted Q3 shipments
An earlier calendar put launch inventory into the quarter
The Pixel 9 rollout began at the end of August 2024, with additional models arriving in early September. The Pixel 8 generation launched in October 2023. As a result, Q3 2024 included meaningful Pixel 9 launch shipments, while Q3 2023 had little or no Pixel 8 launch contribution.
This is a genuine timing advantage, but it complicates a year-over-year comparison. An earlier launch gives Google more selling time before the holiday quarter and can also pull shipments forward from Q4. The data therefore reflects both demand and the placement of launch inventory within the calendar.

A larger portfolio made the comparison less like-for-like
Counterpoint said the Pixel 9 family contained four models, compared with two for the Pixel 8 family. The Q3 2024 range comprised:
- Pixel 9
- Pixel 9 Pro
- Pixel 9 Pro XL
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold
More models cover more prices and form factors, which can raise total shipments. It also means aggregate Pixel 9 growth is not a clean model-for-model test against Pixel 8.
Premium visibility improved
The Pixel 9 Pro XL entered Counterpoint’s top 10 best-selling premium smartphones in the United States for Q3 2024. That is a ranking within Counterpoint’s premium category, not a top-10 ranking across every smartphone sold in the country. It indicates stronger visibility at the high end without establishing broad leadership across budget and midrange phones.

The model-count comparison and historical share context are covered in Counterpoint’s U.S. smartphone market-share data.
How significant is a 4% U.S. share?
For Google, 4% is an important relative gain. In simple terms, it is about one in every 25 U.S. smartphone shipments. But the figure remains modest beside Apple and Samsung, which continued to account for much larger portions of the market.
Google’s growth also occurred while the U.S. market contracted 4% year over year. Counterpoint attributed much of that weakness to Apple and Samsung. That combination—Google growing from a small base while larger rivals weakened—helped Pixel improve its position, but it did not turn Google into a comparable-scale competitor.

The result should therefore be read as a record for Google’s Q3 position, not market leadership, an installed-base breakthrough or evidence that Pixel displaced a large number of iPhone or Galaxy owners. The cited data tracks shipments and share, not switching behavior.

There is some follow-through evidence. Counterpoint later reported that Google’s U.S. sales rose by double-digit percentages in Q4 2024 and linked the performance partly to the expanded Pixel 9 portfolio. That makes it less likely that Q3 was only a one-quarter inventory event, although it still does not prove a permanent structural change in Google’s annual smartphone business.
Counterpoint also separately reported Google’s highest-ever global quarterly smartphone volume in Q3 2024. That global-volume statement should not be merged with the 4% U.S. sell-in-share figure: they describe different geographies and measurements. The global result is detailed in Counterpoint’s global Q3 2024 market report, while the Q4 U.S. update appears in Counterpoint’s Q4 2024 U.S. report.

What the numbers cannot tell us
- The exact number of Pixel 9 phones sold to consumers.
- Pixel-specific revenue, gross margin or profit.
- How much channel inventory remained unsold at the end of the quarter.
- Whether buyers upgraded from older Pixels or switched from iPhone or Samsung.
- How much carrier discounting or other promotions affected demand.
- Whether the earlier launch permanently increased annual sales or shifted some Q4 volume into Q3.
What this means for buyers and household budgets
The quarter is evidence that Google’s hardware strategy gained traction, not evidence that Pixel is automatically the best-value phone. Buyers should compare the actual price after trade-ins and carrier promotions, software-support commitments, camera and battery priorities, and the value of an existing ecosystem.
- Pixel: A logical choice for buyers who want Google’s camera software, Android integration and a high-end Pro option.
- iPhone: Often the lower-friction option for households already using Apple services, Apple Watch or iMessage-dependent workflows.
- Samsung Galaxy: A broad Android alternative with extensive carrier and accessory availability.
- Motorola: More appropriate when minimizing the purchase price matters more than flagship camera or premium positioning.
Official product pages are the safest place to verify current specifications, trade-ins and financing terms: Google Store phones, Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Motorola. Prices, promotions and eligibility vary by date and region, so a 2024 market-share result should not be treated as a current price comparison.
Bottom line
Pixel 9 was a meaningful commercial step forward: Google achieved a record 4% Q3 U.S. sell-in share, shipments rose 20% year over year, the earlier launch placed more inventory in Q3, and the four-model lineup broadened its reach. Q4’s double-digit U.S. growth offers additional support.
The most defensible wording is therefore “record Q3 U.S. share and shipment momentum,” not “Google sold more phones than ever.” Consumer sell-through, revenue, profitability and switching remain unproven by the available figures.
