ByteDance’s Doubao is China’s leading consumer AI application by the latest comparable measure—but “overtakes Baidu’s ERNIE” is an oversimplification. QuestMobile’s June 2026 ranking puts Doubao first among mainland China AI-native apps with 382 million active users. Alibaba’s Qwen had 167 million and DeepSeek 129 million. The ranking does not provide a directly comparable current ERNIE figure, so it does not prove a new, one-month Doubao-to-ERNIE pass.
What “China’s top chatbot” actually means
The ranking is about consumer reach, not model quality or revenue. QuestMobile’s 2026 half-year report measures active users of AI-native mobile applications in mainland China. Its June 2026 figures were published in July 2026.
- Geography: mainland China.
- Category: AI-native apps, rather than every app that embeds an AI feature.
- Metric: active users/monthly active users as reported by the measurement provider—not registered accounts, paying subscribers, downloads or daily users.
- Period: June 2026.
QuestMobile says AI-native apps reached 499 million monthly active users by May 2026, with average monthly usage of 92.7 sessions per user. Those figures show a mass market, but they do not identify unique people across multiple apps or reveal how much each user actually does.
The latest consumer-AI ranking
| AI-native app | June 2026 active users | Approximate comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Doubao | 382 million | No. 1 |
| Alibaba Qwen | 167 million | No. 2 |
| DeepSeek | 129 million | No. 3 |
On these published figures, Doubao had about 2.3 times Qwen’s users and nearly three times DeepSeek’s. Its reported total also exceeded Qwen and DeepSeek combined. These are calculations from QuestMobile’s numbers, not separate ByteDance claims.
#1 Best Overall
A second measurement provider, AICPB, also ranked Doubao first in June 2026 but estimated 324.31 million monthly active users. The gap between 324.31 million and 382 million is a reminder that methodology matters. Neither number should be treated as a government census or a definitive count of individual people. See AICPB’s China app ranking.
Why “overtakes ERNIE” is historically incomplete
Doubao’s lead appears to be a continuing trend rather than a single June 2026 event. A November 2024 report from the South China Morning Post cited roughly 51 million monthly active users for Doubao versus 12.5 million for Baidu’s then consumer assistant, Wenxiaoyan, also known as Ernie Bot in older coverage.
Another South China Morning Post report cited QuestMobile data putting Doubao at 157 million monthly active users in August 2025. Product names changed during this period: Baidu’s ERNIE is a model family, while its consumer assistant has been branded ERNIE Bot and Wenxiaoyan. That naming shift makes old and new app comparisons especially easy to misread.
The defensible conclusion is that Doubao had already been reported ahead of Baidu’s consumer chatbot by late 2024 and expanded its lead by 2026. The current QuestMobile excerpt does not publish an equivalent June 2026 ERNIE number.

The market is now a three-way—and wider—contest
The top three in the latest ranking are Doubao, Qwen and DeepSeek, not Doubao and ERNIE alone. Alibaba’s Qwen brings a large commerce and cloud ecosystem; DeepSeek has become a major alternative with a different product and model profile. Tencent Yuanbao, Kimi, Quark and other Chinese services add further competition.
This matters commercially. Consumer attention can support subscriptions, advertising, agent transactions and hardware distribution, but app reach is only one part of an AI company’s business. Enterprise contracts, API consumption, cloud revenue and embedded search usage may occur outside a chatbot app ranking.
How Doubao built that scale
ByteDance distribution and habit formation
Doubao is a ByteDance product associated with China’s Douyin ecosystem. Calling it “TikTok’s Doubao” may help international readers recognize the parent company, but TikTok is ByteDance’s international platform; mainland Chinese users generally encounter Doubao through Chinese services rather than TikTok. ByteDance’s recommendation, content and app-distribution capabilities plausibly lower acquisition friction. The available rankings do not quantify how many users came from any particular ByteDance app, so this is a strategic explanation, not a measured causal result.
Low-friction voice and agent features
Doubao’s official feature description lists text chat, voice input and speech output, multiple voices, customizable agents and uses spanning study, creation, work and emotional support. It also describes interruptible, real-time interaction. Those functions can make an assistant easier to use repeatedly, but they do not prove superior accuracy or reasoning.

QuestMobile describes Doubao’s strategy as moving from a conventional model toward agent-based execution across mobile and PC contexts. It reports that Doubao launched a paid version on June 24, 2026, focused on six office scenarios. No verified price or conversion rate is provided, so the launch should be read as monetisation experimentation rather than evidence of subscription success.
Speech and desktop expansion
ByteDance’s Seed team announced a full-duplex speech model on April 9, 2026, designed to listen while speaking and resist background interference. The team says it improved call duration and retention compared with an earlier Doubao speech model; those are first-party claims. Doubao’s desktop product page lists translation, webpage browsing, screenshot questions and assistance with documents, spreadsheets and code.
Where Baidu’s ERNIE still fits
A lower consumer-app ranking does not mean Baidu’s entire AI business has been overtaken. ERNIE models are offered through Baidu Search, AI Cloud and enterprise products, where usage may not appear as a standalone chatbot MAU.
Baidu released ERNIE 5.1 on May 9, 2026. Baidu describes it as a more compact model with stronger reasoning and agent capabilities, claiming roughly one-third the total parameters and half the active parameters of ERNIE 5.0, with about 6% of comparable pretraining cost. These are Baidu’s technical claims, not independent measurements. Baidu also says ERNIE 5.1 scored 1,223 and ranked fourth globally and first among Chinese models on the Arena Search leaderboard at release.

Those categories cover much more than a consumer chatbot. Developers can access ERNIE models through Baidu AI Cloud and Qianfan. The Qianfan documentation, updated July 9, 2026, lists ERNIE-4.5-Turbo-20260402 inference input at RMB 0.0008 per 1,000 tokens in the cited table; availability and billing depend on the cloud account and service terms.
Popularity is not proof of technical superiority
App active-user rankings answer “which product is being used most,” not:
- which model is most accurate or best at reasoning;
- which system is strongest at coding, search or long-context work;
- which provider has the best safety, reliability or enterprise support;
- which API has the lowest cost; or
- which model performs best on a specified Chinese-language benchmark.
Keep two leaderboards separate: Doubao leads the cited consumer-reach ranking, while model capability requires a benchmark, test date and methodology. Baidu’s Arena Search statement cannot overturn QuestMobile’s app ranking because the measurements evaluate different things.

For mainland-China consumers
Doubao is the strongest choice when broad consumer reach, voice interaction and ByteDance-style agents are the priority. Qwen is a logical alternative for users already invested in Alibaba services, while DeepSeek offers another major model ecosystem.

Best Value
For developers and companies
Choose based on deployment requirements rather than app rankings. ERNIE/Qianfan may fit teams that need Baidu Cloud integration and Chinese-language APIs. Doubao’s consumer and desktop direction may matter more to teams building voice, agent or cross-device experiences. Compare authentication, data governance, latency, support, model limits and regional billing directly.
For international readers
Mainland-China account requirements, language, payment, data-governance rules and regional availability may outweigh feature differences. TikTok access does not automatically provide Doubao access, and an app’s domestic popularity is not evidence of global availability.
How to read future “top chatbot” claims
- Check whether “top” means MAU, downloads, revenue, benchmark score or something else.
- Confirm the geography and whether embedded assistants are included.
- Match the product: Doubao app versus ByteDance model; ERNIE model versus Baidu consumer assistant.
- Check the month, measurement provider and methodology.
- Separate consumer reach from paid conversion, API revenue and enterprise adoption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Doubao’s lead mean Baidu has lost the AI race?
No. The ranking measures consumer AI-app activity. Baidu’s search, AI Cloud, enterprise services and ERNIE APIs are broader businesses and are not represented by one chatbot MAU figure.
Are the 382 million Doubao users all paying customers?
No. QuestMobile reports active users for June 2026. It does not establish that they are unique people, daily users, registered accounts or subscribers.
The Bottom Line
Doubao is the current consumer-reach leader in mainland China according to QuestMobile’s June 2026 AI-native app ranking, with 382 million active users. But “overtakes Baidu’s ERNIE” is best understood as historical shorthand: Doubao had reportedly passed Baidu’s consumer chatbot earlier, and the latest ranking does not supply a same-method ERNIE figure. The result says far more about distribution and product adoption than about which underlying model is technically best.
