Verdict: Mostly misleading. Elon Musk wrote in June 2021 that his primary home was “literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase” that he rented from SpaceX. But the later headline claiming he “opened the doors” and lived there with all 12 children is not supported by documented evidence. It also does not establish that the house still serves as his primary residence in 2026.
Where the headline came from
The claim appeared in a Daily Galaxy article published February 5, 2025. Its headline presents several ideas as one current event: a $50,000 house, a public opening or tour, and a household shared with Musk’s 12 children. The article mainly recycles Musk’s older statement and does not provide a dated video, interview, floor plan, lease, property record or first-party interior reveal proving those additions.
The article is useful evidence of what was claimed, but not independent confirmation of the entire story. Read it here: Daily Galaxy’s February 5, 2025 report.
What Musk actually said
According to the report, Musk posted on June 9, 2021: “My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX.” The same account reportedly said the only house he owned was an events house in the Bay Area.

That wording establishes only what Musk described at that time: an approximate price, a location near Boca Chica, a primary-home designation and a rental relationship with SpaceX. It does not say that he owned the unit, that his children lived there, or that he invited the public inside.
What is known—and what remains unverified
| Claim | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Roughly $50,000 | Musk reportedly used that approximate figure in 2021. There is no documented closing price, appraisal or current valuation. |
| Rented from SpaceX | The rental arrangement is attributed to Musk’s statement; no lease or SpaceX confirmation is provided. |
| Boxabl “Casita” | The Daily Galaxy article describes the home as a Boxabl prefab, but no direct Boxabl confirmation identifies Musk’s specific unit or model. |
| 377 square feet | The article reports this size, but does not provide a floor plan or building record. It also mentions a 20-by-20-foot footprint, which would be 400 square feet before accounting for wall thickness or measurement conventions. |
| $250 monthly rent | This is an article claim without a published lease or company confirmation. |
| Current residence | No evidence here confirms that the Boca Chica house remains Musk’s primary home in August 2026. |
Did Musk open the doors for a tour?
No verified home tour was identified. The report does not show a clearly dated video, interview, first-party photo series, interior walkthrough or other direct disclosure in which Musk opened the residence to the public. “Opened the doors” is therefore headline language, not an established event.

Is it really a Boxabl house?
The alleged home is widely described in coverage as a Boxabl-style prefab unit, and the Daily Galaxy article calls it “La Casita.” That is an attribution, not proof that Boxabl supplied the particular residence. The available evidence does not establish Musk’s ownership, the exact model, the unit’s present location or whether promotional images depict his home.
A careful description is that the residence was reported to be a small prefab near SpaceX’s Boca Chica/Starbase facilities. Its exact address should not be published, especially given Musk’s security profile and the presence of children.

What does “$50,000 house” leave out?
A quoted prefab price is not necessarily the all-in cost of a habitable property. Depending on the project, separate expenses can include:
- Land and site preparation
- Foundation, anchoring and delivery
- Permits and construction labor
- Electricity, water, septic and other utility connections
- Furnishings, insurance, taxes, maintenance and security
Because no budget, contract or appraisal is provided, the $50,000 figure should be treated as Musk’s approximate description—not a verified total housing cost or present market value.

Does he live there with 12 children?
This is the least supported part of the headline. The evidence does not show that all of Musk’s living children reside in the house full-time, stay there simultaneously or share a single household with him. It includes no custody or household-arrangement documentation and no statement from Musk or the children’s mothers establishing that interpretation.
“Lives with” can also mean occasional visits or family time rather than permanent cohabitation. The headline turns an unverified interpretation into a definite claim, and the available material does not justify doing so.

Does Musk still live there?
The strongest specific evidence dates to June 2021. The 2025 article does not demonstrate that the arrangement continued, and the available reporting does not confirm Musk’s primary residence as of August 2026. A statement about a primary home at one point in time is not proof of a current address or exclusive residence.
Claim-by-claim fact check
- Supported, with limits: Musk reportedly said in 2021 that his primary home was a roughly $50,000 house in Boca Chica/Starbase rented from SpaceX.
- Reported but not independently confirmed: the Boxabl identification, 377-square-foot size, 20-by-20-foot footprint and $250 monthly rent.
- Unsupported: that Musk opened the home for a verified public tour.
- Unsupported: that he lives there with all 12 children.
- Unknown: the unit’s current value, ownership records, exact all-in cost and whether it remains his primary residence.
The most accurate conclusion is mostly misleading: a genuine 2021 quote appears to be the kernel of the story, while newer and more dramatic details are not documented.
