Donald Trump said Apple CEO Tim Cook called him in October 2024 to complain about EU penalties, but Apple did not confirm the call when Reuters sought comment. The figures Trump cited appear to refer to two different cases: a €13 billion Irish tax recovery and a separate €1.8 billion antitrust fine over music-streaming rules.

What Trump said about the alleged call

During an interview with podcaster Patrick Bet-David released on October 17, 2024, Trump said Cook had called him “two hours ago” or “three hours ago.” Trump said Cook raised an EU matter worth about $15 billion and another penalty of about $2 billion. Trump also recounted telling Cook that he first needed to be elected, but would not let the EU take advantage of U.S. companies. These are Trump’s descriptions of a private conversation, not independently verified statements from Cook. Reuters’ report covered the claim during the final weeks of the 2024 presidential campaign.

Which Apple cases match the amounts?

Case What the European Commission did How it relates to Trump’s figures
Irish tax case After a long legal challenge, Apple and Ireland lost in September 2024, and Ireland was required to recover €13 billion in back taxes. The Commission’s case concerned state aid and tax arrangements, not a conventional antitrust fine. The €13 billion amount was reported as roughly $14 billion to $15 billion, depending on exchange rates and rounding.
Music-streaming case In March 2024, the Commission imposed a €1.8 billion antitrust fine over App Store restrictions that limited music-streaming services’ ability to tell users about cheaper subscriptions outside the App Store. The amount was approximately $2 billion, matching the second figure in Trump’s account.

Both matters were real, but they involved different legal issues and remedies. Describing them together as one $17 billion EU fine is misleading: the larger sum concerned recovery of taxes, while the smaller one was an antitrust penalty. The reported figures help explain what Trump may have been referring to; they do not independently establish what Cook said.

Did Apple confirm that Cook called Trump?

No confirmation was reported. Reuters said Apple did not respond to its request for confirmation of the call’s authenticity. The supported conclusion is that Trump said Cook called him; the call itself remains unverified in the available public reporting.

How this differs from the broader EU technology dispute

The cases behind Trump’s figures should not be collapsed into a general claim that the EU’s Digital Markets Act caused both penalties. The Irish matter was a tax and state-aid dispute. The music-streaming penalty arose from competition enforcement over App Store rules. More broadly, EU technology policy includes competition rules and the Digital Markets Act, which sets obligations for large digital platforms. Apple has argued that some EU requirements create security, privacy, engineering, or business complications; EU officials say the rules are intended to promote competition and open digital markets. Those policy disagreements are context, not proof of the alleged 2024 call.

What happened after the 2024 claim?

In July 2026, Trump said the United States would investigate EU trade practices, accusing the bloc of unfairly fining Apple and other U.S. technology companies. The Associated Press reported the announcement. That later dispute shows the issue remained politically active; it does not verify the earlier account of a private conversation.

Apple and EU officials also disagreed in 2026 over the European rollout of Apple intelligence features, including Siri-related capabilities. Apple said EU rules contributed to delays affecting features such as iPhone-to-Mac mirroring, live translation with AirPods, and location-related functions in Maps. EU officials rejected the claim that the Digital Markets Act itself prevented Apple from launching them. The European Commission later described discussions with Cook as “constructive.” Boursorama reported on those discussions. This was a separate, later disagreement—not evidence about what Cook allegedly told Trump in 2024.
