Short answer: YouTube TV’s $72.99 price was real, but it was the standard base-plan price announced on March 17, 2023—not the current price. New subscribers paid $72.99 immediately, while existing subscribers saw it on bills dated April 18, 2023 or later. As of August 18, 2026, YouTube lists its standard main plan at $82.99 per month plus tax.
What changed in March 2023?
YouTube TV raised its main English-language plan from $64.99 to $72.99 per month, an $8 increase (about 12.3%). New customers were charged the new rate at signup. Existing customers were scheduled to move to it with bills beginning April 18, 2023.
YouTube attributed the increase to rising content costs and continued investment in service quality. The timing followed Google’s agreement to carry NFL Sunday Ticket, reportedly worth about $2 billion annually, but YouTube did not say that the entire increase funded that deal. Treat the Sunday Ticket connection as context, not a confirmed cause. Ars Technica’s report documents the announcement and rationale.
The 4K Plus change softened the impact for some subscribers
The same announcement cut 4K Plus from $19.99 to $9.99 per month. A subscriber who already had the add-on therefore went from a combined $84.98 to $82.98 before tax: the base plan rose, but the total fell by about $2.

- 4K playback for selected programs—not the entire YouTube TV catalog.
- Unlimited simultaneous streams at home.
- Offline viewing of eligible DVR recordings on mobile devices.
Availability depends on the program, device, app and display. YouTube says current 4K Plus pricing can vary, so check Settings → Membership in the app before assuming the 2023 $9.99 price still applies. See YouTube’s 4K Plus help page for current eligibility details.
How YouTube TV’s advertised base price changed
| Period | Advertised base price | Change from prior listed price |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 launch | $35/month | — |
| 2018 | $40/month | $5 |
| 2019 | $50/month | $10 |
| 2020 | $64.99/month | $14.99 |
| March 2023 | $72.99/month | $8 |
| January 2025 onward | $82.99/month | $10 |
These are nominal advertised prices, before tax, promotions and add-ons; channel lineups and plan structures also changed over time. The increase from $35 to $72.99 was $37.99 per month (about 108.5%). The move from $72.99 to $82.99 was $10 (about 13.7%). At those rates, a full year would have cost $875.88 and $995.88 respectively, before tax.
The historical figures are reported by Ars Technica; YouTube’s current billing documentation lists the $82.99 standard rate.
Is YouTube TV still $72.99?
No—not as the standard main-plan price. YouTube’s official billing page lists the main plan at $82.99 per month plus applicable taxes, automatically charged at the start of each billing cycle until canceled. Check YouTube’s billing documentation for the current account terms.

A $72.99 charge may still appear because of a legacy promotion, a temporary discount, an older screenshot or article, a third-party billing arrangement, or confusion between the main plan and a genre-based plan. Taxes and add-ons can also make the amount on a statement differ from the advertised base price. Recent YouTube Help Community replies identify $72.99 as the former standard rate and January 2025 as the move to $82.99; those replies are corroboration, not the primary pricing authority.
What the standard plan includes
YouTube describes the main service as a live-TV package with more than 100 broadcast, cable and regional sports networks, local major broadcast networks where available, live sports, unlimited DVR storage, up to six household accounts and three simultaneous devices. Channel availability depends on your market and location verification, so “100+ channels” is not a guarantee that every household receives the same lineup. Details are in YouTube’s service overview.
Six accounts do not mean six concurrent streams: the standard service limit is three devices at once. Unlimited DVR also does not guarantee commercial-free playback; network and program rules determine whether recorded or on-demand versions are shown.
YouTube TV now has more than one plan configuration
YouTube’s current documentation lists the comprehensive main plan alongside genre-oriented choices such as Sports, Sports + News, Sports + Entertainment, Sports + Family, News + Entertainment and Entertainment + Family. You cannot assemble a package by selecting individual channels, and available plans can differ when billing is handled by Google Play, a mobile carrier or an internet provider. Review the current plan documentation for the options shown on your account.

Sports Plan
YouTube describes a lower-priced sports-focused option with major-broadcaster games, sports networks including ESPN, relevant in-market local channels, unlimited DVR, Multiview and family sharing. It can be paired with NFL Sunday Ticket. The documentation does not provide one universally applicable price, so check the amount displayed for your market and billing path rather than relying on an old promotion. See YouTube’s Sports Plan page.
How to check your actual charge
- Open YouTube TV and select your profile picture.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Membership or Billing, depending on your device and account.
- Identify the base plan, active add-ons, taxes, credits and any promotion end date.
- Confirm whether YouTube, an app store or a carrier is the billing provider.
Carrier and app-store subscriptions may expose different management controls. A higher bill is not automatically evidence of a new general price increase.
Common reasons a bill is higher
- A promotion expired.
- 4K Plus, Sports Plus, NFL Sunday Ticket or a premium network remained active.
- Streaming or local taxes were added.
- Your account changed from a genre plan to the main plan.
- Your billing provider applied different plan rules.
How cancellation works
YouTube automatically bills each cycle until you cancel. In YouTube TV, open your profile picture, choose Settings, then Membership and the cancellation controls. Review the final billing date and add-ons before confirming. Labels vary by device and billing provider. Cancellation generally ends renewal rather than retroactively refunding a paid period; verify the access end date shown during checkout.

A broad sports and local-TV household

A viewer focused on one category
If you mainly watch sports, news or entertainment, compare the relevant genre plan first. It may reduce unused channels, but it can omit general-interest networks you expect.
An occasional or on-demand viewer
If live television is rare, an on-demand service, a direct network subscription or an antenna for free local broadcasts may cost less. An antenna does not replace cable networks or broad live sports.
A single-league fan
Buying a league or network directly can be more efficient when you need only one competition. Check local rights, blackouts and out-of-market restrictions before switching.
A 4K shopper
4K Plus is a poor fit if you expect most channels or live events in 4K. Its value depends on eligible programming, compatible equipment and the additional streaming or offline features.

Alternatives to compare
Do not compare the $82.99 headline with a competitor’s promotional price or an all-in cable bill without matching taxes, equipment charges, regional fees, channel needs and expiration dates. Potential alternatives include Sling TV for a more configurable lineup, Hulu + Live TV for live channels plus an on-demand catalog, Fubo for sports-oriented households and DIRECTV for larger packages. Verify each provider’s current price and channel availability before buying.
For only local broadcast channels, an antenna combined with on-demand services can avoid a monthly live-TV bundle. Reception varies by location.
Bottom line for a 2026 reader
The $72.99 headline described a genuine March 2023 price change: YouTube TV rose from $64.99, and existing customers moved to the rate on bills beginning April 18, 2023. That price is historical. The standard main plan is now listed at $82.99 per month plus tax, while newer genre plans and account-specific promotions may produce different choices. Before canceling or accepting a higher bill, inspect your plan, promotion, taxes and add-ons in Membership/Billing and compare the channels you actually watch.
