As of August 16, 2026, the cheapest new Mac laptop Apple lists in the United States is the MacBook Neo, starting at $699 before sales tax. Eligible education-store customers can buy it from $599. If you specifically want a MacBook Air, the entry price is $1,299 for the 13-inch M5 model, or $1,199 through Apple’s U.S. Education Store. Prices and stock can change.

The cheapest new MacBook overall: MacBook Neo

Apple’s standard U.S. Mac store lists the MacBook Neo from $699, making it the lowest-priced new Mac laptop in Apple’s current lineup. It is a separate, lower-cost product line—not an older MacBook Air sold at a discount.

Apple’s Neo purchase page shows 256GB and 512GB storage choices and colors including Blush, Citrus, Indigo and Silver: MacBook Neo buying page. The advertised price is a “from” price; selecting more storage, Touch ID configurations, AppleCare+, accessories or other options raises the total.

Who the Neo suits

  • Students, children and casual users.
  • Web browsing, email, messaging and video calls.
  • Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, note-taking and streaming.
  • Light photo editing and general browser-based work.

Where the cheapest configuration can be limiting

  • Professional video editing, 3D work and game development.
  • Large software projects, multiple virtual machines or heavy local AI workloads.
  • Large music-production sessions or extensive photo and video libraries.
  • Workflows needing abundant ports, multiple external displays or substantial internal storage.

These are workload-based buying considerations, not benchmark claims. Check the exact configuration before ordering, particularly its memory and storage limits.

The cheapest MacBook for students

Apple’s U.S. Education Store lists the MacBook Neo from $599 before tax: Apple Education Store Mac listings. Eligibility can require an active school email or other verification, and rules vary by country and customer category. The price is not available to every shopper.

Compare that discount with Apple’s live refurbished stock. A refurbished listing can match the education price, but inventory, colors and configurations can disappear or change. Apple also advertises promotions such as education gift cards at times; verify the current end date and eligible products rather than treating a gift card as an instant price reduction.

The cheapest MacBook Air

If “MacBook” means “MacBook Air” to you, the least expensive current option is the 13-inch MacBook Air with an M5 chip. Apple lists it from $1,299 in the standard U.S. store and $1,199 in the Education Store: MacBook Air buying page.

Apple’s displayed Air configurations include 16GB or 24GB of memory, 512GB or 1TB storage options, and 13-inch and 15-inch models. Some listed 13-inch configurations use a 10-core CPU/eight-core GPU arrangement, while others show a 10-core CPU/10-core GPU arrangement. Configuration details matter more than the M5 name alone.

When the Air justifies the extra cost

  • You regularly switch among many applications and browser tabs.
  • You edit photos or video and need more memory or storage flexibility.
  • You expect demanding workloads or want more headroom for a longer ownership period.
  • You want a conventional mainstream MacBook experience rather than the lowest possible entry price.

MacBook Neo versus MacBook Air

Consideration MacBook Neo MacBook Air

Is the cheapest MacBook worth buying?

Choose the Neo when

  • Your ceiling is roughly $600–$700 and you need a new Mac.
  • Your files are mostly in cloud services and your work is browser-based.
  • You are buying for school, basic productivity or casual use.
  • You have checked that the base storage and memory meet your needs.

Spend more on the Air when

  • You can spend about $1,200–$1,300 or more.
  • You multitask heavily or use creative applications.
  • You need more storage or memory flexibility.
  • Replacing a limited machine soon would cost more than buying the Air now.

Check the real ownership cost

A low “from” price may not be your out-the-door price. Include any storage upgrade, external drive, cloud plan, hub or dock, accessories, AppleCare+ and sales tax. A monthly payment is not a discount: compare the total amount paid, interest or fees, and any return obligation.

Apple-certified refurbished, retailer-refurbished and used Macs

Apple’s refurbished pages currently show MacBook Neo and MacBook Air inventory, including changing configurations: Apple refurbished Mac inventory and refurbished MacBook Air listings. At the time checked, Neo listings appeared from $599, but that is inventory-dependent rather than a permanent model price. Verify the exact model, condition, warranty and return terms on the listing.

Route Potential advantage Risk or qualification
Apple Certified Refurbished Apple’s direct sales channel and a lower price than comparable new stock Stock and configurations change; confirm current warranty and return terms
Retailer-refurbished Can cost less than Apple’s listing Battery condition, refurbishment quality, warranty and returns vary by seller
Private used sale Potentially the lowest purchase price Highest risk of battery wear, Activation Lock, damage and weak or absent returns

A recent Apple-silicon used MacBook Air may be a better budget alternative than an Intel model, but used-market prices vary and are not stated here as current offers.

Why older Intel MacBooks can be a false bargain

An exceptionally cheap Intel MacBook can carry a shorter remaining software-support life, lower efficiency, more heat and fan noise, an aging battery, keyboard or display, and weaker resale value. Compatibility with newer macOS features and applications can also become a problem. Consider Intel only when the price is exceptionally low and you have checked software compatibility and condition.

How to lower the price without buying blindly

  1. Check education pricing: Eligible U.S. customers can start with the $599 Neo price at Apple’s Neo Education Store page.
  2. Compare Apple refurbished stock: Look at the exact configuration, warranty and return terms before assuming it is cheaper.
  3. Use trade-in carefully: Apple’s estimate depends on the submitted device’s described condition. Apple inspects it after receipt and can change the value; online trade-in may take two to three weeks. See Apple’s Mac purchase page.
  4. Evaluate promotions separately: A gift card or retailer offer is not the same as a lower purchase price, and eligibility or end dates can apply.
  5. Compare financing by total cost: Apple advertises Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Upgrade. Upgrade is described as a 24- or 36-month lease arrangement through Klarna, with return and upgrade conditions. Read the agreement before choosing it.

Used-Mac inspection checklist

  • Confirm whether the processor is Apple silicon or Intel and check current macOS compatibility.
  • Verify the serial number and that Activation Lock is removed.
  • Review battery health and cycle count.
  • Test the keyboard, display, camera, speakers, charging port and wireless connections.
  • Confirm the charger is genuine and included.
  • Get a written return window and make sure the discount justifies the risk.

Do not confuse the cheapest Mac with the cheapest laptop substitute

Apple’s Mac mini starts at $799 in the standard store and $699 in the Education Store, but it is a desktop and requires a separate display, keyboard and mouse. It is not a cheaper MacBook replacement unless you already own those peripherals. See Apple’s lineup at Apple’s Mac store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the $599 MacBook Neo available to everyone?

No. It is the starting price in Apple’s U.S. Education Store for eligible customers, and verification may apply.

Is Apple refurbished the same as used?

No. Apple Certified Refurbished is sold through Apple, while retailer-refurbished and privately used machines have different refurbishment standards, warranties and return protections.

Is financing the cheapest way to buy a MacBook?

Not necessarily. Financing spreads payments; compare the agreement’s total amount, fees, interest and any lease or return conditions with the one-time price.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The cheapest new MacBook is the MacBook Neo at $699, or $599 for eligible U.S. education customers. The cheapest MacBook Air is the 13-inch M5 model at $1,299 standard or $1,199 education. Choose the Neo for basic, budget-focused use; choose the Air when heavier multitasking, storage flexibility or longer-term headroom justify the higher cost.
