ICICI Bank mistakenly exposed about 17,000 credit cards to ‘wrong’ users: What happened and what customers should do

On April 25, 2024, ICICI Bank acknowledged that its digital channels had incorrectly mapped approximately 17,000 newly issued credit cards to other existing users. Some iMobile Pay customers reportedly saw another person’s full card number, expiry date and CVV. The bank said the affected cards—about 0.1% of its credit-card portfolio—were blocked and replacements were being issued.

This was a serious accidental exposure of payment-card data, but the public account does not establish an external hack or widespread fraudulent use.

What happened

Customers using ICICI’s iMobile Pay app reported seeing credit cards they had not applied for. The cards appeared to belong to other customers, and reports said the app displayed sensitive fields including the full card number, expiry date and card verification value (CVV).

ICICI told TechCrunch that approximately 17,000 cards had been “erroneously mapped” to incorrect users through its digital channels. The cards had reportedly been issued in the preceding few days, but the available report does not establish an exact start or end time for the exposure.

The 17,000 figure refers to cards incorrectly mapped in the bank’s systems. It does not prove that 17,000 distinct people viewed another customer’s details, nor that 17,000 people became fraud victims.

What information was exposed?

The reported exposure included:

  • Full card number
  • Expiry date
  • CVV

Those details can increase the risk of card-not-present fraud, phishing and social engineering. They do not guarantee that a transaction will succeed: authorization can also depend on merchant rules, card controls, network checks, one-time passwords and whether domestic or international payments are enabled.

Do not reproduce or share a screenshot of another person’s card. Publishing it creates a second disclosure and may facilitate fraud.

Was ICICI Bank hacked?

The available reporting does not establish that an outside attacker penetrated ICICI’s systems. The bank described the incident as an error in customer-card mapping. “Accidental data exposure” or “unauthorized disclosure” is therefore more precise than saying the bank was hacked.

The term “data breach” can describe confidential information being exposed to people who were not authorized to see it, but it should not be read here as proof of a criminal intrusion. The public information does not identify whether the underlying cause was a software defect, batch-processing error, database problem, deployment change or another control failure.

How many cards and customers were affected?

According to ICICI’s statement reported by TechCrunch, about 17,000 credit cards were affected, representing approximately 0.1% of the bank’s credit-card portfolio. The number of distinct account holders who saw someone else’s information, and the number of people whose cards were viewed, have not been independently established.

Was money stolen?

ICICI said that no misuse of a card from the affected set had been reported to it at the time of its statement. That means the bank had not received such reports then; it is not an independently audited finding that no data was ever misused.

The report provides no verified total for fraudulent transactions. A customer may also have an unrelated unauthorized transaction that cannot be attributed to this incident. ICICI said it would appropriately compensate a customer for a financial loss, but that statement is not an unconditional guarantee for every dispute; eligibility depends on the facts, card agreement and applicable rules.

What ICICI Bank said it did

  • Blocked the affected cards.
  • Started issuing replacement cards.
  • Undertook to compensate appropriate financial losses.
  • Apologized for the inconvenience.

The available report does not establish how quickly every replacement arrived, whether every affected customer was proactively notified, or whether ICICI published a root-cause or independent-resolution report.

What affected customers should do

1. Contact the bank through an official channel

Report the incorrect card mapping to ICICI and ask whether your card was in the affected set, whether it has been blocked and when a replacement will arrive. Do not use phone numbers or links from unsolicited messages.

ICICI’s current credit-card FAQ lists blocking routes through Internet Banking, iMobile, customer care and a branch. App labels can change, so follow the current instructions shown by the bank.

2. Lock or disable the card while the issue is investigated

If the bank has not already blocked the card, use an official card-freeze or block option and request a replacement. ICICI’s SmartLock service can temporarily lock services including credit cards and digital-banking channels.

3. Review transactions carefully

  • Check recent statements and continue checking after the replacement is issued.
  • Look for small test charges as well as large purchases.
  • Review online, international, contactless, recurring and cash-related activity where applicable.
  • Save statements, alerts, emails, case numbers and the dates of every contact with the bank.

ICICI’s FAQ says disputed transactions may generally be raised within 90 days from the transaction date under Visa/Mastercard guidelines. Confirm the deadline that applies to your card and dispute type directly with ICICI or the relevant network.

4. Report unauthorized transactions promptly

Use the bank’s official dispute process as soon as you see a transaction you did not authorize. Ask for a formal complaint or service-request number, and keep copies of all submissions. Replacement of the old card does not automatically resolve a dispute involving an earlier transaction.

5. Use transaction controls

ICICI’s published controls allow customers to manage certain transaction types and limits through iMobile and Internet Banking. Use the current interface to disable channels you do not need or lower limits while monitoring the account.

6. Escalate unresolved complaints

If a documented privacy or transaction complaint is not resolved, use ICICI’s grievance-redressal process and then the appropriate Indian banking or cybercrime complaint channel. Avoid putting card numbers or CVVs in a public post or complaint.

What remains unknown

  • Whether exposure was limited to iMobile Pay or also appeared in other interfaces.
  • The precise exposure window.
  • How many distinct users viewed another customer’s data.
  • Whether any exposed details were successfully used for fraud.
  • Whether every affected customer was directly notified and when.
  • Any later root-cause, regulatory or long-term security findings.

No public source identified for this report establishes an RBI enforcement action, a government investigation result or a final remediation audit.

Bottom line

ICICI Bank’s April 2024 incident was a confirmed wrong-user card-mapping failure that exposed highly sensitive card details—not a publicly proven external hack. The bank said it blocked the approximately 17,000 affected cards, issued replacements and had received no misuse reports at the time. Customers who may be affected should contact ICICI through official channels, secure the card, monitor every transaction and report disputes quickly.
