Google Wallet can hold far more than bank cards. Depending on your country, device and participating provider, it can store boarding passes, event tickets, transit passes, loyalty cards, IDs, health credentials and digital car keys. The important qualification is that Wallet is a storage and access layer—not a guarantee that every airline, transit agency, government office or vehicle supports a credential.
Here are five useful capabilities, with setup steps, compatibility limits and practical fallbacks.

1. Save boarding passes and event tickets
You can save airline boarding passes, train tickets, concert tickets and similar credentials when the provider offers an Add to Google Wallet or Add to GPay button. A saved pass opens from Wallet and can be scanned at a gate or entrance. Unlike a screenshot, an issuer-integrated pass may receive changes such as a new gate, seat or validity period.

How to add a ticket
- Open the ticket, boarding pass or confirmation email.
- Tap Add to Google Wallet (or Add to GPay).
- Accept the issuer’s and Google’s terms if requested.
- Select a device if more than one is associated with your account.
- Tap View in Wallet.
Google documents this issuer flow for tickets, health passes, campus IDs and transit passes at its pass-adding guide.
If there is no add button
- The airline, venue, rail operator or ticketing company may not support Wallet.
- The pass may be available only in the provider’s own app.
- A desktop page or unsupported mobile browser may hide the option.
- The issuer may prohibit transfer or sharing.
Check the issuer’s app or website first. Do not assume that a screenshot has the same security, updates or transfer behavior as a live Wallet pass.
2. Use transit passes and supported transit access
Participating transit systems can let you buy or link a digital pass in Google Wallet. Some systems instead support open-loop travel, where you tap a supported bank card; that is different from storing a transit-agency pass.

Add a transit pass
- Open Google Wallet.
- Tap Add to Wallet.
- Choose Transit pass.
- Select your transit system.
- Follow the purchase or account-linking instructions.
The supported systems and setup options are listed in Google’s transit guidance. Google also lists selected Wear OS examples, including Clipper, WMATA, PRESTO, ORCA, MARTA and Sofia City Card; that is not a worldwide compatibility list.

- Your specific agency and card program must be supported; another city may use a different system.
- A phone pass may work even when the same pass is not supported on a watch.
- Moving a balance from a physical card may require registration or a transfer process with the transit provider.
- Keep a backup payment method until you have tested the pass at a real reader.
3. Carry loyalty cards, gift cards and ordinary barcodes
Wallet can consolidate retail rewards cards, membership cards, gift cards, library cards, gym passes, parking passes and other barcode or QR-code credentials. Direct integrations can provide a richer pass; a photo-created pass is mainly a convenient way to display a static code.
Add a card from a merchant or provider
- Open the merchant or provider app or website.
- Tap Add to Google Wallet.
- Accept any requested terms.
- Tap View in Wallet.
Create a pass from a barcode photo
- Open Google Wallet and tap Add to Wallet.
- Choose Photo.
- Select a clear image of the barcode.
- Enter a name and description.
- Tap Add, then open the pass at the scanner.

The limitation of a photo pass
A photographed or converted barcode may not receive balance, expiration or promotional updates. It can scan successfully without being a fully integrated merchant account. Google also notes that direct loyalty-card lookup is limited to supported merchants, and Google Play gift cards are not supported through that website flow.
4. Store IDs and health credentials where they are officially supported
Depending on the issuing authority and country, Wallet may support U.S. state IDs and driver’s licenses, digital ID passes, campus IDs, some insurance cards, health passes and vaccine cards. These categories are not interchangeable.
Know what kind of credential you are adding
- Official digital ID: A government-issued or government-authorized credential with an identity-verification process.
- ID pass: A credential used by a participating app or service to verify identity.
- Image or barcode pass: A visual copy that may have no legal ID status.
Saving an image of a license does not make it a legally accepted digital driver’s license. Acceptance depends on the issuing authority and the checkpoint, business, airport or app. Review Google’s ID-pass information and the relevant government or insurer instructions.

Questions to answer before relying on an ID
- Does your state, country or issuing agency offer the credential?
- Is your Android device eligible, and is identity verification required?
- Where is the credential accepted?
- Must you still carry the physical ID under local law or venue policy?
- How will you remove or suspend it if the phone is lost?
Private credentials such as IDs and insurance cards can have different visibility and privacy behavior from ordinary passes; some may not appear on the Wallet website. Google explains Wallet data handling in its privacy information.

On selected vehicles and in selected markets, Google Wallet can act as a digital car key for locking, unlocking and starting. Some vehicles also expose lock, unlock, alarm and trunk controls. Google gives compatibility examples including Pixel 6 and later, Samsung Galaxy S21 and later, and selected Android 12-or-newer devices—but the phone model alone is not enough. The car, market and software must also support the feature.
Typical setup routes
Manufacturers may start setup in their app, through an email link or on the vehicle’s head unit. In a typical manufacturer-app flow:

- Open the manufacturer’s app and find digital car key.
- Follow the pairing instructions and sign in with your Google Account when prompted.
- Accept the terms and tap Start pairing.
- Wait for the phone and vehicle to pair.

Entry modes and backup behavior
- Passive entry: On compatible combinations, the car can unlock as you approach, start when you are inside and lock as you leave.
- Proximity unlock: Hold the phone near the door handle when passive entry fails or is unavailable.
- Low-battery operation: Google says the key may continue to unlock and start the car for a few hours after a low-battery shutdown, subject to vehicle and verification settings. Treat this as limited resilience, not a guaranteed emergency backup.
- Remote commands: Supported vehicles may provide lock, unlock, alarm and trunk controls through Wallet or Quick Settings, generally within Bluetooth range.
If pairing fails, update the phone and vehicle software, confirm both are supported and remove and pair the key again through the manufacturer’s approved route. Keep a physical key or another access method until the system has worked reliably in your car.
Useful extras: automatic organization from Gmail
Wallet can also organize information found in Gmail. With Gmail smart features and Wallet’s auto-save setting enabled, it can save loyalty cards, event tickets, train tickets, boarding passes, receipts, online orders and package-tracking information. This is a visibility and organization layer, not a replacement for a retailer’s or carrier’s authoritative tracking system.
Turn Gmail auto-save on or off
- Open Wallet.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Manage passes from Gmail.
- Turn Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail on or off.
Google says saved passes remain in Wallet even if the original email is later deleted. Review the setting if you do not want email details copied into Wallet.
Sharing and finding passes
Some tickets and cards can be shared to another person’s Wallet, but issuers can disable sharing. Google says a sent share link cannot be unsent and the recipient may forward it, so share only with someone you trust. Wallet search can locate saved items and recent transactions by business, amount, date, time period or category. Some single-device and private passes will not appear on the Wallet website.
What Wallet can—and cannot—replace
Google Wallet reduces the number of cards, tickets and keys you carry, but compatibility belongs to the issuer, agency, employer, school, government authority or vehicle manufacturer. Add each credential through an official route, test it before travel or entry, and keep physical backups for legally important identification, vehicle access and situations where acceptance is uncertain. Wallet and Google Pay are related but distinct: Wallet is the app and storage layer for passes, keys and credentials, while Google Pay refers to the payment service that may still appear in issuer instructions.
