An NFT subscription is not one product. It can be an expiring blockchain membership, an automatically renewing on-chain pass, a token-gated benefit, a conventional subscription that happens to issue an NFT, or a free loyalty credential. The NFT proves eligibility; a separate contract or billing system determines whether money is charged, when access ends, and how renewals fail.
What an NFT subscription actually is
Start by separating the credential from the payment plan. An NFT can identify a member, unlock a benefit, certify authenticity, or serve as a receipt. Recurring billing requires its own renewal mechanism.

| Model | What the NFT does | Does it automatically bill? | Typical control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expiring NFT membership | Grants access until an expiration date encoded or enforced by the membership contract. | No, unless a renewal system is added. | Membership contract; Unlock calls the membership NFT a “Key” and its minting contract a “Lock” (Unlock documentation). |
| Recurring on-chain subscription | Represents the current membership term. | Yes, when the renewal transaction succeeds. | ERC-20 allowance and balance, renewal timing, and the subscription contract. |
| Token-gated membership | Proves ownership before access to products, discounts, events, collections, or communities. | No. Ownership checking is access control, not billing. | Tokengating application and wallet signature. |
| Traditional subscription plus NFT | Acts as a credential, receipt, reward, or access token issued alongside a normal recurring plan. | Yes, through the conventional subscription system, not the NFT itself. | Merchant payment processor and subscription platform. |
| Free NFT loyalty pass | Provides rewards, certificates, receipts, marketing access, or gated benefits. | No customer charge for the NFT. | Distribution and claim flow; Shopify says free NFT offers cannot require cryptocurrency ownership or charge transaction fees. |
Calling every one of these arrangements a “monthly NFT” obscures important questions: what happens when a term expires, who can cancel, which asset is charged, and whether a transferred NFT carries the benefit with it.
How recurring on-chain renewals work
Unlock’s documented recurring model renews an expiring membership when its current term ends. The subscription price must be an ERC-20 token such as USDC or USDT. Native ETH is not supported for automatic renewal in this model, although wrapped assets such as WETH, WXDAI, and WMATIC can be used (Unlock on-chain subscriptions guide).

The renewal timeline
- A 30-day membership purchased today remains active for its 30-day term; renewal is not triggered immediately.
- At expiration, the system checks both the member’s ERC-20 balance and the token approval available for the renewal price.
- If either is insufficient, the renewal is not triggered and the subscription is paused for lack of funds.
- After the member restores sufficient balance and approval, a paused subscription can reactivate.
- The wallet does not need the entire future cost at initial purchase—only enough for the next renewal when it becomes due.
Changing an Unlock subscription’s price or duration does not silently rewrite existing memberships. Existing subscribers must subscribe again after such a change.
Creating an Unlock subscription
- Open the subscription creation page.
- Set the subscription name, price and currency, renewal frequency (for example, weekly or monthly), and deployment chain such as Base or Arbitrum.
- For the guide’s worked example, the values are “My subscription on Base Sepolia,” 5 USDC per month, monthly renewal, and Base Sepolia.
- After deployment, open the Unlock Dashboard, connect the creator wallet, click the subscription, choose Tools > Checkout Builder, configure checkout, and copy the resulting link.
Card payments are a separate Unlock path
Unlock’s documented credit-card flow uses Stripe Connect. Card funds go off-chain to the creator’s Stripe-connected bank account rather than through Unlock (Unlock credit-card guide).
- Open the lock’s details page in the Unlock Dashboard.
- Choose Tools > Update Lock Settings.
- Open Payments and click Accept.
- Click the Credit Card button in the lock toolbar.
- In the Credit Card pane, select Connect Stripe.
A lock manager must authorize Unlock’s key-granting role. Revoking that role disables card payments, and Stripe approval can take several days; the lock cannot receive card payments until approval is complete. The guide, updated March 5, 2023, lists Stripe’s fee as 2.9% + $0.30 and an additional Unlock charge of 10% of the price. Treat those figures as historical documentation, not guaranteed current pricing, and verify the live commercial terms before launch.
Rank #2
For fraud control, Unlock retains the key-manager role for an NFT bought by card, so the owner cannot directly sell or cancel that membership. A chargeback does not automatically justify continued access; the guide recommends that the lock owner cancel the membership after a reversed transaction.
Shopify: combining subscriptions, NFTs, and token gating
Shopify documents its recurring subscriptions and NFT features as separate systems. A merchant can charge a normal subscription and issue an NFT, while a tokengating app checks ownership for gated benefits. Shopify does not provide one universal native “NFT subscription” contract.
Build a conventional recurring plan
- In Shopify admin, go to Apps > Subscriptions.
- Choose Plans > + Plan.
- Enter the title and internal description; optionally enable Offer discount and set its type and value.
- Choose delivery frequency and a weekly, monthly, or yearly interval.
- Click Save.
Attach the plan from Products: open a product, find Purchase options, click + Subscriptions, choose an existing plan under Choose existing (or the Subscriptions app under Create new), then save.
Rank #3
Show the subscription widget
- Go to Online Store > Themes and click Edit theme.
- Select or create a product template.
- Under Product information, choose Add block > Subscription widget.
- Save the theme.
For Online Store 2.0 themes or themes supporting theme blocks, Shopify says to turn off the Subscription widget in the theme editor’s App embeds section so it displays correctly.
Deleting a plan follows Apps > Subscriptions > Plans, select the plan, then Delete > Delete plan. Deleted plans cannot be recovered. Removing a product from a plan does not cancel existing subscriptions for that product.
What Shopify’s subscription APIs do
Shopify’s architecture uses selling plan APIs, subscription contract APIs, and customer payment method APIs (Shopify subscription API documentation). New subscription apps and new installs should use these APIs; some existing legacy installs may continue where newer limitations remain.
Rank #4
When checkout uses a selling plan, Shopify creates a subscription contract detached from the original plan. Editing the selling plan therefore does not change existing contracts. A subscription app creates later orders through billing attempts, receives webhooks, and handles failures, scheduling, and customer-management screens. Shopify prohibits using selling plans for installments, layaways, or crowdfunding, as well as overbilling, unclear or stale contracts, and payment-method vaulting unrelated to recurring or deferred payments.

Token gating is available to all Shopify merchants, but approval to sell NFTs through Shopify Payments is separate. Shopify Payments approval covers first-party, primary NFT sales only; secondary sales and resales are not permitted (Shopify NFT FAQ).
Shopify’s documented NFT-sale regions are Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States (Shopify NFT documentation). Shopify Payments also excludes NFT marketplaces where the merchant is not the creator or owner, secondary royalties that let customers earn from later sales, and staking rewards that passively distribute tokens.
Best Value
Typical claim experience
- The customer buys the NFT like another store product.
- After fulfillment, an email provides an NFT claim-page link.
- The customer supplies wallet information; customers without a wallet can be guided through wallet creation on the claim page.
- A distribution app mints and delivers the NFT to that wallet.
A wallet is required to interact with the blockchain, including proving ownership for gated access, and every blockchain transaction requires customer confirmation. For a free NFT, Shopify says the customer cannot be charged transaction fees or required to own cryptocurrency.
POS requirements
Shopify POS subscription selling-plan support requires POS app version 10.13 or later, POS UI extensions API version 2025-10 or later, and Shopify Payments enabled (Shopify POS subscription requirements). Earlier POS app or extension versions can produce blocked checkouts.
- Existing selling-plan contracts must be managed through the online store.
- “Ship and carry out” orders and split payments are unsupported.
- Shipping selling plans outside the configured shipping zone are unsupported.
- Stores without Shopify Payments cannot sell subscriptions through POS.
- Subscription-only products are unsupported on POS.
Choose the model by the job it must perform
| If you need to… | Use | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| End access automatically after a fixed term | Expiring membership NFT | Expiration checks, grace periods, and renewal communications. |
| Charge crypto automatically each term | Recurring on-chain subscription | Supported ERC-20 token, allowance, balance monitoring, pauses, and network fees. |
| Reward customers without charging crypto | Free NFT pass | Claim-page wallet onboarding and a clear statement that the pass is free. |
| Keep familiar card billing | Traditional subscription plus NFT | Separate reconciliation between payment status and token delivery. |
| Offer benefits to holders regardless of billing history | Token gating | Ownership verification, transfer rules, and what happens when a token moves wallets. |
Operational checklist before launch
- Define whether the NFT expires, transfers, or remains a permanent collectible.
- Document the payment rail: ERC-20, card, or another recurring processor.
- Specify renewal timing, failed-payment behavior, cancellation, refunds, and chargebacks.
- Tell customers which wallet, network, token, approvals, and transaction confirmations they need.
- Test a successful purchase, an expired term, an insufficient balance, an insufficient allowance, a cancellation, and a chargeback.
- Keep billing status and token-gated access synchronized; do not assume NFT ownership alone proves a paid-up subscription.
- For Shopify, verify regional NFT eligibility, Shopify Payments approval, POS versions, and whether the offer is primary sale rather than resale.
Claims to reject
- “An NFT subscription is simply an NFT that renews monthly.” An NFT may be permanent, expiring, gated, or a reward; recurring billing is an additional mechanism.
- “Token gating charges members monthly.” It only verifies ownership.
- “Unlock automatically charges native ETH.” Its documented recurring flow uses ERC-20 tokens; wrapped native assets may be used instead.
- “Changing the price updates everyone.” Unlock requires existing members to re-subscribe, while Shopify contracts remain detached from edited selling plans.
- “Shopify Payments supports NFT resales.” Its NFT approval is for first-party primary sales.
The Bottom Line
The safest way to design an NFT membership is to specify three separate layers: the NFT credential, the access rule, and the billing or renewal system. Unlock is suited to ERC-20-based on-chain renewals with explicit allowance and balance failure modes; Shopify is suited to conventional subscription billing paired with NFT delivery or token gating. Choosing the layer that owns expiration, payment failure, cancellation, and customer support prevents the most expensive misunderstandings.
