Stoke Space raises $260 million for its fully reusable Nova rocket—what the financing means

Stoke Space’s $260 million Series C brought disclosed funding to $480 million for Nova and Launch Complex 14. Later Series D financing raised the company’s stated total to $1.34 billion, while orbital reuse and launch economics remain to be demonstrated.

Stoke Space announced a $260 million Series C on January 15, 2025, taking its disclosed funding to $480 million. The capital was earmarked for continued development of Nova, manufacturing and test infrastructure, and Stoke’s dedicated Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral. The round was significant, but it financed a vehicle still awaiting an orbital flight demonstration—not an operating launch service.

What Stoke’s $260 million round funded

Stoke’s announcement described the financing as a Series C investment supporting four related activities:

  • Final development work on Nova, a planned two-stage medium-lift rocket.
  • Expansion of the company’s manufacturing headquarters.
  • Enhancements to its private test facility.
  • Completion of Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The company said the round more than doubled its disclosed funding to $480 million. It did not disclose the valuation, ownership sold, liquidation preferences, or individual investor contributions. The named participants were Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Glade Brook Capital Partners, Industrious Ventures, Leitmotif, Point72 Ventures, Seven Seven Six, the University of Michigan, Woven Capital and Y Combinator, “among others,” so the list should not be read as exhaustive. Stoke’s Series C announcement contains the company’s full description of the transaction.

Nova is designed to reuse both stages

Nova is not simply a conventional rocket with a recoverable booster. Stoke’s architecture calls for reuse of the first stage, the upper stage and the payload fairing. The upper stage would return from orbital velocity, survive reentry, and land under its own propulsion.

That distinction is central to Stoke’s business case. Recovering a first stage can save hardware, but the upper stage is normally discarded after delivering a payload. Reusing it could, in principle, reduce the amount of new hardware required per mission and support more frequent launches. It also creates the hardest part of the engineering problem: an upper stage must manage orbital reentry heating, guidance, structural loads, propellant reserves and a controlled landing, then be inspected and flown again at an acceptable cost.

Stoke says Nova uses an actively cooled metallic heat shield integrated with the upper-stage engine. The company presents that design as a way to reduce refurbishment compared with conventional thermal-protection systems. That is a company design claim, not an independently established operating result.

Stoke’s published Nova specifications

The figures below are current specifications published by Stoke, not independently validated flight performance. The 3,000-kilogram and 7,000-kilogram figures describe different operating modes.

The engines and upper-stage approach

Zenith first-stage engine

The January 2025 financing announcement followed a vertical test firing of Stoke’s Zenith engine at Moses Lake, Washington. Stoke describes Zenith as a full-flow staged-combustion engine using liquefied natural gas and oxygen. The company said this test work placed it among only two entities globally to have developed and tested such an engine; that is Stoke’s characterization rather than an independently verified industry ranking.

Andromeda upper-stage engine

Stoke calls its upper-stage engine Andromeda. In a February 2025 description of the next design iteration, Andromeda 2, the company said outboard thrusters would permit ignition while the upper stage remained attached to the first stage. Stoke argues that this hot-staging approach can reduce gravity losses and avoid a heavy disposable interstage shield. The engine is also designed, in Stoke’s plan, for deep throttling, atmospheric operation, multiple restarts and powered vertical landing. Stoke’s Andromeda explanation describes those architectural objectives.

What Stoke had demonstrated by January 2025

The Series C was not the company’s first hardware milestone. Stoke said it had previously completed a September 2023 vertical takeoff and landing test of a full-scale reusable upper-stage prototype. The company described that test as demonstrating its hydrogen/oxygen engine, regeneratively cooled heat shield, differential-throttle thrust-vector control, avionics, software and ground systems. The later Zenith firing added first-stage engine testing to the development record. Neither demonstration established Nova orbital flight, upper-stage recovery from orbit or routine reuse.

Why Launch Complex 14 matters

Launch Complex 14 is the historic Cape Canaveral site used for John Glenn’s Friendship 7 Mercury-Atlas mission in 1962. Stoke selected it as a dedicated Nova launch location rather than relying solely on a conventional shared pad.

Stoke said it completed an environmental assessment and secured a license to develop and operate the site on October 20, 2024. Its later account describes a horizontal integration facility, underground utilities and other infrastructure intended to support reusable, high-cadence processing. A dedicated complex could eventually give Stoke more control over vehicle flow and turnaround, but construction and licensing milestones are not the same as an operational launch site. Stoke’s Launch Complex 14 overview provides the company’s account of the redevelopment.

How the financing story changed after Series C

The $260 million round is no longer Stoke’s latest financing. Subsequent announcements materially changed the company’s capital position.

Date Financing event Stated cumulative capital
December 2021 Series A, $65 million Not separately stated in the Series A materials cited by Stoke’s later history
October 2023 Series B, $100 million $175 million
January 15, 2025 Series C, $260 million $480 million
October 8, 2025 Series D, $510 million, plus a separate $100 million debt facility $990 million, according to Stoke
February 10, 2026 Series D expanded to $860 million $1.34 billion, according to Stoke

The October 2025 capital was directed toward expanding Nova production, completing activation of Launch Complex 14, increasing supply-chain capacity, developing Stoke’s Boltline product and building infrastructure for higher launch cadence. In February 2026, Stoke said the enlarged Series D would accelerate later elements of its product roadmap. The financing terms for those rounds were also not disclosed. See the Series B announcement, October 2025 Series D announcement and February 2026 Series D extension.

Why investors may see a market beyond commercial launches

Stoke’s potential customers extend beyond ordinary satellite deployment. The company positions Nova for satellite delivery, in-space mobility, asset capture and return, and cargo logistics. A vehicle that could repeatedly return its upper stage would be valuable for those missions if the promised turnaround and refurbishment economics are achieved.

Government demand is another part of the investment case. Stoke was selected for the U.S. Space Force’s National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 program. The broader program has a potential value of $5.6 billion, but that is the value of the contract vehicle, not money already awarded to Stoke. Stoke’s announcement also identified a separate $5 million initial task order for capabilities assessment and mission-assurance planning. Selection gives Stoke a route to compete for future missions; it does not guarantee launch revenue. The Space Force selection announcement describes the arrangement.

What remains unproven

  • Orbital flight: The reviewed official sources do not establish a Nova orbital launch.
  • Upper-stage recovery: A suborbital prototype landing is not the same as recovering an upper stage after orbital reentry.
  • Rapid turnaround: Aircraft-like frequency and turnaround measured in hours are development objectives, not demonstrated cadence.
  • Economics: Stoke has not established an actual cost per launch, refurbishment cost or price per kilogram.
  • Schedule: The sources reviewed do not establish a verified first-launch date or customer launch schedule.
  • Payload trade-off: The 3,000-kg fully reusable LEO figure should not be confused with the 7,000-kg maximum-payload figure.
  • Execution: Funding improves the company’s financial runway, but it does not remove engineering, regulatory, supply-chain, test or flight risks.

Bottom line for readers tracking aerospace finance

The January 2025 Series C was a major vote of confidence in an unusually ambitious launch architecture, financing Nova development and a purpose-built Florida launch site. But it was a development-stage investment, not proof that fully reusable orbital launch had been achieved. By February 2026, Stoke said its later Series D financing had lifted total capital raised to $1.34 billion. The decisive evidence still lies ahead: an orbital flight, recovery and reuse of the upper stage, reliable turnaround, and a commercially sustainable launch cadence.
