Announced December 1, 2025, these were two separate executive moves: former Payscale CEO Scott Torrey joined Smartsheet as chief revenue officer, while Amar Subramanya joined Apple as vice president of AI. Apple’s announcement also outlined John Giannandrea’s transition out of his senior AI position. The announcements establish the appointments and organizational changes at that time, but do not verify either executive’s employment status after the transition period.
Scott Torrey joins Smartsheet as chief revenue officer
Torrey joined Smartsheet as chief revenue officer, a role that puts him at the center of the company’s go-to-market and revenue-generation work. Smartsheet did not publicly define a more detailed operating remit in the information available for the announcement, so the title should not automatically be read as ownership of every sales, marketing, partnership or customer-success function.
The appointment also reunited Torrey with Smartsheet CEO Rajeev Singh. The two previously worked together at Concur, giving the hire an established professional connection as Smartsheet rebuilt parts of its senior leadership team. GeekWire reported the appointment and background on December 1, 2025.
Torrey’s career in enterprise software
| Period or role | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| Concur | Nearly two decades at the enterprise-software company, including six years as chief revenue officer. |
| Payscale | Chief executive officer from 2019 through 2021. |
| Tesorio | Executive chairman for the three years immediately before the Smartsheet move, according to the announcement. |
| Smartsheet | Chief revenue officer, announced December 1, 2025. |
That combination gives Torrey experience in large-account software sales, operating as a CEO and working at board or executive-chair level. It supports viewing him as an experienced enterprise operator; it does not establish that Smartsheet’s revenue will rise or that the appointment will produce a particular business result.

Why the Smartsheet hire mattered in context
Torrey arrived as Smartsheet was reshaping its leadership and ownership profile. Rajeev Singh had recently become CEO, and the company had added or announced other senior positions, including a chief product officer, chief information security officer and chief technology officer.
Earlier in 2025, Smartsheet completed an $8.4 billion take-private transaction involving Vista Equity Partners and Blackstone. The company was also presenting itself as an “intelligent work management” platform rather than simply an online spreadsheet product, with a strategy involving AI agents, knowledge graphs and automation.
Those facts make a revenue executive relevant to Smartsheet’s effort to sell an expanded enterprise proposition after the transaction. They do not prove that the ownership change caused Torrey’s hiring, that the leadership reset was solely acquisition-driven or that the strategy will succeed. A veteran enterprise-sales leader can add process and large-account experience, while a reshuffle can also create disruption or blur responsibilities during a transition.
Apple appoints Amar Subramanya to lead specified AI functions
Apple appointed Amar Subramanya vice president of AI and placed him under Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president responsible for software engineering. Apple said Subramanya would oversee Apple Foundation Models, machine-learning research, and AI Safety and Evaluation.

Apple’s description is narrower than the shorthand “lead Apple’s AI efforts.” The vice president role does not mean Subramanya owns every AI project, every Apple Intelligence feature or all work related to Siri. Apple’s announcement identifies the specific areas in his remit and ties the reorganization to future Apple Intelligence work and efforts toward a more personalized Siri.
Subramanya’s Microsoft and Google background
- Immediately before Apple, he was a corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft.
- He spent 16 years at Google.
- At Google, he led engineering for the Gemini Assistant before leaving.
- Apple characterized his expertise as spanning AI research, machine learning and turning research into products.
Calling him a “former Microsoft corporate vice president of AI” is accurate, but incomplete without the substantial Google and Gemini Assistant experience. His background combines research leadership with work integrating AI into consumer software.

John Giannandrea’s transition was broader than a one-for-one replacement
Apple said John Giannandrea would step down as senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy. He would remain with Apple as an adviser until retiring in spring 2026.
At the same time, Apple said other portions of Giannandrea’s organization would move toward groups overseen by Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue. Subramanya therefore did not simply inherit an identical organization under a new title: Apple assigned him defined AI areas while redistributing other responsibilities across the company.

That design could bring foundation-model research, safety evaluation and software-product decisions into closer coordination under Federighi. It could also make accountability harder for outsiders to track when a former single organization is divided among several leaders. The public announcement does not specify every team, reporting detail or operating boundary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the two moves signal—and what they do not prove
Smartsheet
- The company was pairing a new CEO and broader C-suite changes with a CRO experienced in enterprise software revenue.
- The timing fits an effort to expand the company’s enterprise positioning after its take-private transaction.
- It is reasonable to view the hire as part of a go-to-market reset, but the available announcement does not establish a target, forecast or measurable result.
Apple
- Apple brought in an external AI leader with senior experience at both Microsoft and Google.
- Reporting to Federighi places the new AI role within software-engineering leadership.
- The stated remit connects foundation models, machine-learning research, safety and evaluation with future Apple Intelligence features and a more personalized Siri.
- The move can be interpreted as an effort to align research and product development more closely; Apple did not say that it was hiring Subramanya solely to repair Siri or respond to a particular competitor.
What remains unknown
The December 2025 announcements do not disclose compensation, exact start dates, detailed internal reporting charts or measurable business outcomes. They also do not establish whether Torrey remained at Tesorio through the Smartsheet appointment, nor do the available sources verify either executive’s role after the spring 2026 transition period.
Accordingly, these should be read as confirmed personnel and organizational announcements from December 1, 2025—not as evidence that Smartsheet’s revenue accelerated, Apple’s AI products improved, or either executive still holds the same position today.
