The browser tool launched by Grow with Google in 2022, which transcribed spoken answers and highlighted patterns such as job-related terms and covered talking points, now has an old URL that redirects to a general interview guide. Google’s current guidance points users toward Gemini Live, while other options are better for speech coaching, career-story development, or human feedback.
This guide explains what Warmup did, what its feedback meant, why older tutorials are misleading, and how to choose a practical replacement.
Is Google Interview Warmup still available?
As of August 18, 2026, the former Interview Warmup URL redirects to Google’s broader interview-preparation material instead of opening the practice tool. Do not assume an older review, video, or “Get started” instruction still matches the live experience.
Some 2026 coverage reports that Google retired the product in April 2026 and displayed a short “spring cleaning” notice. That date and wording come from secondary reporting, not a currently verifiable Google retirement announcement (Skillora’s report).

The practical conclusion is simple: treat Interview Warmup as a discontinued or unavailable historical product, not as a dependable service you can sign up for today.
What Interview Warmup was
Google announced Interview Warmup in 2022 as a free, browser-based Grow with Google tool. It was initially designed around Google Career Certificate learners but was made available to the wider public. Google described its questions as created by industry experts, not generated by an AI interviewer (Google’s launch announcement).
Historical question sets included general interview practice and representative certificate-related areas such as:
- Data analytics
- Digital marketing and e-commerce
- IT support
- Project management
- UX design
The exact categories could change over time, so this is not a guaranteed complete inventory.

How the original tool worked
- Choose a practice area. You selected a general interview option or a career-related question set.
- Receive a question. The prompt came from an expert-created question bank.
- Answer aloud. You spoke through your device microphone in the browser.
- Review the transcript. The service transcribed the response while you answered.
- Inspect insights. It identified job-related terms, frequently used words, and talking points it detected. Some descriptions also referred to pacing, word choice, and clarity-related observations.
- Try again. You used the transcript and detected patterns to revise and repeat the answer.
Google said machine learning handled transcription and insight generation. That made the product AI-assisted, but not a modern conversational hiring evaluator.
What its feedback did—and did not—mean
Useful diagnostics
- A transcript let you see whether your spoken answer was organized and understandable.
- Frequently used words could reveal repetitive language.
- Detected job terms and talking points could show whether you addressed obvious parts of a question.
- Repeated private practice made it easier to become comfortable answering aloud.
Not a hiring score
Interview Warmup did not grade answers as pass or fail. It did not establish that an answer was persuasive, factually correct, credible, or likely to win a job. No insight could verify your examples or metrics, guarantee that you used the STAR method effectively, or predict what Google or another employer would ask.
A response with no detected insight was not necessarily a bad response; it could reflect the limits of the pattern detector, transcription quality, terminology, accent, or audio.
Was it genuinely AI-powered?
Yes, in a narrow, documented sense: machine learning transcribed speech and identified patterns in the response. The questions themselves were described as expert-created. “AI-powered” therefore did not mean a reasoning interviewer, an adaptive assessment, or an employer’s scoring model.
Rank #3
Was it free, and did Google save answers?
The original Warmup service was described as free and browser-based. Google’s former FAQ said it did not save users’ audio or transcripts and that responses were private to the user; users could copy an individual response or download the full transcript (former product FAQ). That statement applies to the historical Warmup service only. It should not be generalized to Gemini or any third-party replacement without checking that service’s current privacy terms.
How useful was it?
Where it helped
- It removed the cost and scheduling barrier to speaking practice.
- It helped first-time and nervous candidates get used to hearing their own answers.
- It made repetition easy and private.
- It exposed filler patterns, overused words, and apparently missing talking points.
- It supplied a transcript for self-review when no mentor was available.
Where it fell short
- It could not judge whether a story sounded credible or persuasive.
- It did not challenge vague claims or ask probing follow-ups comparable to an interviewer.
- It did not verify accomplishments, numbers, or technical accuracy.
- It was not resume-aware or company-specific.
- Keyword-oriented feedback could tempt users to optimize wording instead of substance.
Google’s broader interview guidance still emphasizes understanding the role, researching the company, practicing answers, and preparing thoughtful questions; a general practice tool cannot replace that preparation (Google interview guidance).
Is Gemini Live Google’s replacement?
Google currently recommends Gemini, including Gemini Live, for real-time conversational practice and STAR-method rehearsal (Google’s current guidance). This is a successor in direction, not an identical rebrand of Warmup.
| Feature | Former Interview Warmup | Gemini Live |
|---|---|---|
| Product type | Dedicated interview-practice tool | General conversational AI |
| Question source | Expert-created sets | Prompt- or conversation-driven |
| Voice interaction | Yes | Yes |
| Feedback | Transcription and pattern insights | AI-generated feedback depending on prompt and current features |
| Follow-ups | Limited or absent | Conversational follow-ups are possible |
| Current status | Original URL redirects | Current Google-recommended option |
Gemini’s availability, features, limits, and privacy terms can vary by country, account, device, and plan. Give it the job description and a clear rubric, and treat its comments as revision suggestions—not an employer’s scoring system.

Best alternatives by your actual need
For free, general behavioral practice: Gemini Live or self-recording
Use Gemini Live for conversational rehearsal, or record yourself with a phone or webcam when you want the lowest-friction, lowest-data option. Both are suitable for practicing answer fluency and STAR structure.
For delivery and filler-word coaching: Yoodli
Yoodli offers interview roleplays, recording uploads, and communication analysis. It is a better fit when your bottleneck is pacing, filler words, long pauses, monotone delivery, or overly long introductions (Yoodli practice guide).
Pricing observed August 18, 2026:
| Plan | Price and allowance | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free; five lifetime sessions | A few practice runs |
| Pro | $8/month billed annually; up to 10 roleplays per week | Regular individual practice |
| Advanced | $20/month billed annually; unlimited roleplays | Frequent delivery coaching |
| Team and Enterprise | Custom pricing | Organizations |
Yoodli defines a roleplay as a practice session longer than 30 seconds. Its pricing page states that Advanced, Team, and Enterprise data is excluded from AI training by default; Starter and Pro have different terms, so review the current policy before sharing sensitive material (Yoodli pricing and privacy terms).
For career changers: Career Dreamer
Career Dreamer helps identify transferable skills, explore career possibilities, create a Career Identity Statement, and work with Gemini on resumes and cover letters. Google describes it as an early-stage experiment using U.S. labor-market data from Lightcast and wage data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is useful before interview practice when you cannot explain how past experience fits a new role; it is not a spoken mock-interview simulator.
Best Value
For nuanced credibility checks: a human partner
A friend, mentor, counselor, alumni contact, or peer can notice whether your story sounds believable, relevant, collaborative, defensive, evasive, or exaggerated. Human practice takes coordination, but it provides social and contextual judgment that pattern analytics cannot.
For technical interviews: role-specific practice
Use coding or system-design environments, domain question sets, a whiteboard, and a technically qualified practice partner. General conversational AI can help you explain trade-offs aloud, but it is not an authoritative source for a company’s current technical rubric.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A 30-minute replacement routine
- Five minutes: Read the job description and select five realistic behavioral questions.
- Ten minutes: Answer three questions aloud for roughly one to two minutes each, without reading a script.
- Five minutes: Review a transcript or recording for unclear chronology, missing outcomes, filler words, and excessive setup.
- Five minutes: Rewrite only the weak openings, personal actions, and results.
- Five minutes: Re-answer the two weakest questions, aiming for clarity rather than memorization.
For each answer, check whether the situation and task are brief, your actions are unmistakable, and the result is concrete or measurable where appropriate.
Common failure modes
Microphone and browser problems
- Check browser and operating-system microphone permissions.
- Select the correct input device.
- Move to a quiet room and use a headset microphone.
- Try a current desktop browser if mobile access fails.
- If speech recognition remains unreliable, use a phone recorder or type the answer.
A transcription mistake is not proof that your communication was poor; first rule out noise, device selection, accent handling, and specialized terminology.
AI feedback that rewards the wrong behavior
- Do not stuff answers with keywords.
- Do not force every story into a rigid formula at the expense of personality.
- Do not equate fewer filler words or longer answers with stronger content.
- Never invent or inflate metrics to satisfy a feedback prompt.
Privacy and confidentiality
Do not enter trade secrets, confidential employer information, non-public product details, protected interview questions, or unnecessary personal data. The historical Warmup privacy statement does not automatically apply to Gemini, Yoodli, or another service.
Accessibility and language differences
Speech recognition and automated feedback can vary with language, accent, disability-related speech differences, speed, audio quality, and technical vocabulary. Offer typed practice, captions, transcripts, human review, and extra processing time; a missed keyword is not evidence that you failed to communicate the idea.
Which option should you choose?
| Your need | Best starting point | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Basic behavioral rehearsal at no cost | Gemini Live or self-recording | General-purpose feedback can be inconsistent |
| Filler words, pace, and delivery | Yoodli | Paid tiers and session limits |
| Transferable-skills storytelling | Career Dreamer | Not an interview simulator |
| Credibility and social presence | Human practice partner | Requires a willing, available reviewer |
| Technical or company-specific rounds | Role-specific technical and human practice | More time and specialization |
The former Interview Warmup was valuable as a low-pressure speaking drill, but its pattern insights were never a hiring verdict. Start free with Gemini Live or a recording, pay for speech analytics only when delivery is your bottleneck, and add a human or role-specific reviewer before a high-stakes interview.
