Nokia is relocating its New Jersey research headquarters from the historic Murray Hill campus to a planned facility in New Brunswick’s HELIX innovation district. The move is expected by 2028; Murray Hill remains the listed global headquarters while the transition continues.
What is actually moving?
The organization, its name and its research work are continuing. What is changing is the principal New Jersey site: Nokia plans to move its research headquarters and laboratories from the Murray Hill campus to the HELIX H-2 facility in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Nokia lists research locations around the world, so this is not the disappearance of Bell Labs as a global organization. It is also not a completed move: Nokia’s Murray Hill page still identifies that site as headquarters during the transition. The relocation was announced on December 11, 2023, and is targeted for completion by 2028.

Why Murray Hill matters
Murray Hill has been associated with Bell Labs’ New Jersey operations for more than 80 years. It became a shorthand for the industrial-research model: scientists, engineers, technicians and long-horizon projects working within one large institution.
The campus is also a public-facing historical site. Nokia describes weekday self-guided access to its Future X Lab experience and Technology Showcase; guided tours are not offered, and larger groups need advance approval. The building’s significance therefore extends beyond its address. It is part workplace, part museum of corporate research and part symbol of the era that produced Bell Labs’ reputation.
That history should not be simplified into a claim that every Bell Labs invention happened in Murray Hill. Bell Labs operated across multiple locations and decades, including other notable New Jersey sites such as Holmdel.

From AT&T to Nokia: the name survived, the institution changed
| Era | What changed |
|---|---|
| AT&T and the Bell System | The classic Bell Telephone Laboratories operated within the vertically integrated telephone system. |
| 1984 breakup of AT&T | The corporate structure and funding environment around the laboratories changed. |
| Lucent Technologies | Bell Labs became part of the equipment company spun out of AT&T. |
| Alcatel-Lucent | The laboratories continued under another corporate owner and strategy. |
| Nokia, after its 2016 acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent | The present organization is Nokia Bell Labs. |
Calling the modern operation simply “the old Bell Labs” hides these changes in ownership, incentives, scale and research priorities. The brand is continuous; the surrounding institution is not identical across all eras. Nokia’s current Bell Labs identity is documented on its locations page; the succession is summarized in Hackaday’s historical account.

What the historic laboratory produced
Bell Labs is associated with a compact list of foundational achievements rather than one single invention story:
- the transistor;
- Unix and major contributions to computing;
- information theory and communications research;
- semiconductor, optical and photonics work;
- cellular and satellite communications;
- the first practical solar cell, according to Nokia’s relocation announcement.
Nokia says Bell Labs is associated with 10 Nobel Prizes. Hackaday also reports totals including five Turing Awards, 22 IEEE Medals of Honor and more than 20,000 patents. Those figures describe the institution and its researchers across its full history and should not be read as a claim that one building or one team made all of the work.

Why New Brunswick?
Nokia says the new site is intended to provide purpose-built research space, use facilities more efficiently and bring researchers closer to universities, established companies and startups. New Brunswick’s HELIX district is being developed as a broader innovation hub, with state-backed programs intended to connect corporate research to the region’s academic and entrepreneurial networks.
The announced research agenda includes quantum technologies, photonics and optical research, 6G, artificial intelligence, industrial automation, network fundamentals, semiconductors and devices, and AI software systems. Nokia’s public descriptions establish areas of focus—not guaranteed breakthroughs comparable to the transistor or Unix.
Relevant plans are described by Nokia, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, and the Nokia–NJEDA Strategic Innovation Center announcement.

What is planned for the new operation?
| Item | Planned detail | Status or source qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Location | HELIX H-2, New Brunswick, New Jersey | Planned facility |
| Target move | By 2028 | Nokia target; not a completed relocation |
| Groundbreaking | September 2025 | Reported on Nokia’s U.S. page |
| Building size | Approximately 350,000 square feet | Project figure reported by Nokia |
| Employees | Approximately 1,000 moving to New Brunswick | NJEDA estimate; final headcount may differ |
| Innovation center | Approximately 13,500 square feet | NJEDA Strategic Innovation Center project figure |
| Sustainability | At least LEED Gold targeted | Nokia’s stated design goal |
These are project and planning figures, not proof that the final building, staffing or occupancy will be identical. Nokia’s groundbreaking and U.S. commitment information appears at Nokia United States; employee and floor-area estimates appear in the NJEDA board book and Strategic Innovation Center overview.

The continuity argument
Nokia is investing in a new research facility rather than eliminating the organization. The Bell Labs name, researchers and long-term technical mission continue, and the new building is designed around ambitious fields such as quantum technology, photonics and 6G. Moving closer to universities and startups could expand collaboration that was harder to achieve from a secluded suburban campus.
The discontinuity argument
The historic AT&T laboratory operated under conditions that no longer exist. After the 1984 breakup, Bell Labs passed through Lucent, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia, while corporate research became more closely connected to commercial strategy. A modern facility can preserve expertise and produce important work without recreating the mid-century combination of institutional autonomy, scale and time horizon.
Best Value
Hackaday characterized the move as a symbol of the decline of companies funding basic research for its own sake. That is an interpretation, not a measurable verdict about every Nokia project. The strongest factual conclusion is narrower: the move demonstrates continued corporate research investment, but it cannot yet prove that the original Bell Labs culture has returned.
What happens to the Murray Hill property?
Nokia has not publicly established a complete post-2028 disposition plan in the cited material. It remains unresolved whether the campus will be sold, leased, redeveloped, preserved or partly retained; whether archives and laboratory artifacts will stay accessible; whether public exhibits will move; and whether any teams will remain.
That uncertainty matters because a laboratory’s historical value is not automatically protected when its operating company relocates. The Murray Hill page confirms that the site is active and offers public-facing exhibits during the transition, but it does not settle the property’s long-term ownership or preservation.
Bottom line
Bell Labs is leaving its iconic Murray Hill building, not disappearing. Nokia’s planned New Brunswick headquarters keeps the organization in New Jersey and points it toward quantum technologies, photonics, 6G, AI and automation. The harder question—whether a new campus can carry forward the culture that made AT&T-era Bell Labs legendary—will be answered by the research and institutions that emerge there, not by the name on the entrance.
