There is no independently verified market-share ranking for Indian retail POS vendors. The ten products below are therefore an editorial shortlist ranked by fit: retail depth, GST and inventory workflows, offline operation, multi-store capability, accounting, omnichannel tools and total cost. The right choice for a one-counter shop may be completely different from the right choice for a 20-store chain.
For most buyers, the shortlist starts with Zoho POS for transparent cloud pricing, GoFrugal for deeper Indian retail operations, TallyPrime for accounting-led businesses and Shopify POS for Shopify-based omnichannel brands.
What retail POS software should do
A retail point-of-sale system combines checkout with the operational records behind each sale. Core functions normally include barcode billing, receipts, product and price management, stock deduction, returns, customer records, cashier permissions and reports. More advanced systems add purchase orders, supplier records, batch or expiry tracking, serial numbers, inter-store transfers, loyalty, accounting, warehouses and online-store synchronisation.
Not every product in this list is a retail-first POS. TallyPrime, BUSY, Marg and Vyapar are primarily accounting or business-management products with billing. Shopify POS is an omnichannel commerce platform. Odoo is a configurable ERP with a POS module. That distinction matters when comparing a fast cashier workflow with financial control or online/offline inventory.

1. GoFrugal Retail POS
Best for
Established Indian retailers in grocery, supermarket, pharmacy, apparel, footwear and other multi-location categories that need purchasing, replenishment, transfers and operational reporting.
Why consider it
GoFrugal is positioned as a retail-focused system rather than merely an invoicing application. Secondary comparisons associate it with barcode billing, real-time inventory, GST workflows and expiry tracking, although the exact feature set depends on edition and vertical (Petpooja grocery comparison; GETPOS shortlist).
Limitations
Pricing is commonly quote-led and can depend on modules, hardware, implementation and support. Request an itemised quote rather than assuming software is the complete deployment cost. It is likely more complex than a single shop needs.
Verdict: The strongest candidate here for serious Indian retail operations and multi-store growth. Official site: gofrugal.com.
2. Zoho POS
Best for
Small and medium retailers wanting a modern cloud POS with inventory, purchasing, barcode billing, reports and multi-location management.
Pricing and capabilities
Zoho’s India pricing page lists Free at ₹0 per location/month when billed annually, with one register, one user and 50 POS transactions. Standard is ₹649 per location/month annually or ₹799 monthly; Professional is ₹1,299 annually or ₹1,599 monthly; Premium is ₹2,099 annually or ₹2,499 monthly. A 15-day trial is offered without a credit card. Prices exclude applicable taxes (Zoho pricing).
The vendor lists Windows, macOS, Android and iOS billing apps. Barcode scanning, printer support, offline billing and synchronisation are listed from Standard, while higher tiers add features such as product transfers, serial and batch tracking, e-way bills and Shopify integration (Zoho POS).
Limitations
The free tier is a trial-sized deployment, not a realistic assumption for a busy store. Additional users, registers, warehouses, SMS and integrations can increase the bill. Confirm weighing scales, expiry, exchanges, loyalty and local hardware before signing.

3. TallyPrime
Best for
Retailers whose GST, accounting, inventory valuation and financial controls are as important as checkout, especially businesses already using Tally.
Pricing
Tally’s India page lists Silver at ₹750 for one month, ₹8,100 for 12 months or ₹22,500 for a lifetime licence, plus 18% GST. Gold is ₹2,250 monthly, ₹24,300 annually or ₹67,500 lifetime, plus 18% GST. Silver is positioned for one PC; Gold supports multi-user access across multiple PCs (Tally pricing).
Tally promotes invoicing, inventory, GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, banking and retail workflows (retail capabilities; retail billing).
Limitations
Hardware, deployment, cloud access, support and implementation can materially change total cost. TallyPrime should not automatically be treated as a specialised clienteling, shop-floor or omnichannel platform.
Verdict: Best accounting-led retail system, particularly where the accountant or back office already operates Tally.
4. RetailGraph
RetailGraph is a specialist retail ERP/POS candidate for multi-branch apparel, footwear, pharmacy, grocery and other category-heavy businesses. Its appeal is retail-specific stock, billing and branch management rather than simple invoicing. Current public pricing, offline behaviour and exact integrations were not established here, so confirm the edition, deployment model, hardware and implementation scope with the vendor.
Verdict: Worth a serious demo when GoFrugal and Marg are also under consideration. Official site: retailgraph.in.

5. Marg ERP/MargBooks
Marg is most relevant to retailers whose operations overlap with wholesale, distribution, pharmacy or supplier-heavy inventory. Its long-standing Indian accounting and business-management positioning can suit businesses combining retail, purchasing and financial operations.
Marg’s product family and editions make like-for-like comparisons difficult. Confirm whether the quoted product is desktop or cloud, which modules are included, support terms and whether branch transfers, barcode workflows and expiry controls are covered.
Verdict: A strong candidate for distribution-heavy retail, but potentially excessive for a small lifestyle shop. Official site: margcompusoft.com.
6. BUSY
BUSY suits Indian SMEs seeking accounting, GST, invoicing and inventory in one familiar system. It is a sensible accounting-first alternative to TallyPrime where the accountant already knows the product.

Verify barcode billing, offline sales, multi-store controls, user permissions, printer support and the exact edition. It may be less retail-specialised than GoFrugal or RetailGraph.
Verdict: Practical for financial and tax workflows, not an automatic choice for a complex retail chain. Official site: busy.in.
7. Vyapar
Vyapar is aimed at micro and small businesses needing straightforward invoicing, GST bills, expenses and basic inventory on mobile or desktop. It can be a proportionate replacement for notebooks or spreadsheets.
Retailers needing purchase orders, branch transfers, centralised stock, advanced returns, replenishment or omnichannel inventory should move up to a retail ERP/POS. Confirm current plan limits, devices and offline behaviour for your edition.

8. Shopify POS
Best for
D2C brands and retailers already using Shopify online that want shared products, customers, orders and inventory across web and physical stores.
Pricing
Shopify India displays Basic at ₹1,994/month, Grow at ₹7,447/month and Advanced at ₹30,164/month. POS Pro adds ₹7,000 per location/month. Shopify lists third-party payment-provider rates beginning at 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced (Shopify POS pricing).
POS Pro adds staff permissions, richer customer profiles, returns and exchanges at any location, inventory management, retail reports and omnichannel capabilities. The exact in-person feature set varies by plan and POS Pro status.

Odoo is suitable for organisations wanting POS alongside inventory, purchasing, accounting, CRM, e-commerce or warehouse applications. Its modular architecture can support click-and-collect, cross-store inventory visibility and multi-store processes (Odoo India retail paper).
Flexibility brings implementation responsibility. Users, apps, hosting, customisation, integrations and partner services determine total cost. Do not choose Odoo for a low-touch deployment unless you have the skills or budget to configure and maintain it.
Verdict: Best flexible ERP/POS option for businesses prepared to fund implementation. Official site: odoo.com.

10. myBillBook
myBillBook or a similar lightweight billing platform can suit a very small retailer needing quick GST invoices, payment collection and basic stock records. Its lower complexity may be more appropriate than an ERP for one location with limited SKU and purchasing requirements.
Check barcode, printer, offline, purchase, permissions, stock-transfer and branch-reporting support before treating it as a POS. It should not be presented as feature-equivalent to GoFrugal or RetailGraph.

Questions to settle before buying
GST and compliance
“GST compliant” is too vague. Ask whether GST invoices, reports, e-invoices and e-way bills are native, included in your plan or dependent on a third party. Confirm document limits, registration configuration and what happens when a submission fails. Have your accountant validate the workflow; tax rules and thresholds are not established by the product description alone.
Offline billing
- Can a cashier complete a sale without internet?
- Does barcode lookup and receipt printing continue offline?
- Are e-invoices queued or generated later?
- How are duplicate invoices and stock conflicts resolved after reconnection?
- Is offline mode available on every device and plan?
Zoho explicitly lists offline billing and synchronisation from Standard; do not generalise that behaviour to every vendor.
Hardware
Test barcode scanners, thermal and A4 printers, cash drawers, weighing scales, customer displays, Android tablets or Windows PCs, label printers and payment terminals. Hardware, networking, setup, migration and training may cost more than first-year software.
Migration and support
Ask how the vendor will clean product masters, map SKUs and barcodes, import opening stock and balances, configure taxes, connect printers, train cashiers and preserve historical data. Pilot one store or run the old and new systems in parallel before switching every outlet.
Total cost
Use this calculation: year-one cost = licence or subscription + extra users + registers + locations + hardware + setup and migration + integrations + support + taxes. Request a three-year quote with annual versus monthly billing clearly separated.
How to run a meaningful demo
- Process a barcode sale with discounts, a return, an exchange and a partial refund.
- Disconnect the internet, complete a sale and reconnect it to observe synchronisation.
- Create a purchase order, receive goods and transfer stock between stores.
- Show cashier permissions, audit logs, sessions and refund approval.
- Test your actual scanner, printer, weighing scale and payment terminal.
- Demonstrate e-invoice or e-way-bill failure handling and data export.
- Obtain an itemised three-year quote, including support, hardware, extra users, registers, warehouses and integrations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every retailer in India need a full POS?
No. A one-location shop may only need GST invoices, a product list, barcode scanning, payment recording, basic reports and printer support. Chains and category-heavy retailers usually need transfers, purchasing, permissions, batch or serial tracking and centralised inventory.
Is cloud POS automatically better than desktop software?
No. Cloud systems help with central access and multi-store visibility, but you must check offline billing, synchronisation conflicts, export rights, cancellation terms and data retention.
The Bottom Line
Choose by operating model, not by the longest feature list. Start with Zoho POS for transparent cloud value, GoFrugal for deeper Indian retail operations, TallyPrime for accounting-led businesses, Shopify POS for Shopify omnichannel brands, and Vyapar or myBillBook for genuinely small shops. Select Odoo only when you are ready to manage implementation and customisation.
