Dave Limp became Blue Origin’s chief executive on December 4, 2023, after Amazon announced his departure and Jeff Bezos selected him to replace Bob Smith. As of August 18, 2026, Limp remains CEO. His record is mixed but measurable: New Glenn reached orbit, later landed a booster, then suffered an upper-stage performance problem and a major ground-test accident. Blue Origin is rebuilding Launch Complex 36 and targeting a return to flight before the end of 2026.
What was announced, and when?
This was a two-stage leadership change, not a simultaneous resignation and appointment. Amazon announced on August 14, 2023, that Limp would retire after about 13½ years and remain for several months. (Amazon’s announcement)
On September 25, Bezos told Blue Origin employees that Smith would step down and Limp would become CEO. Limp formally started on December 4, 2023; Smith was expected to complete his transition on January 2, 2024. (Reported internal-announcement details)
Blue Origin and Amazon are separate companies. Bezos founded both, but Amazon does not own Blue Origin. (Amazon’s officer biography)

Who is Dave Limp?
Limp is an operations and product executive rather than a career rocket engineer. At Amazon he led Devices & Services, with responsibility for businesses including Kindle, Fire TV, Echo and Alexa. He also oversaw Project Kuiper, Amazon’s planned satellite-broadband network, giving him direct experience with satellite systems and a large, capital-intensive technology program. (Amazon background; Kuiper and Devices coverage)
Before Amazon, Reuters reported that Limp spent nearly a decade at Apple. His proposed contribution at Blue Origin was management: manufacturing scale, supply-chain control, operating metrics, cross-functional execution and faster decisions.

Why did he leave Amazon?
Amazon’s official account said Limp wanted to view the future “through a different lens” after more than three decades in consumer electronics and stressed that he was not leaving because of a loss of confidence in the Devices & Services roadmap. (Amazon’s statement)
Separate reporting described profitability and job-cut pressure in parts of Amazon’s hardware business, particularly Alexa. That context does not establish that Amazon dismissed him; the company characterized his decision as retirement.

Why did Bezos choose him for Blue Origin?
Blue Origin needed to turn long-running development projects into repeatable production and launch operations. Limp already knew Bezos and Amazon’s management culture, had run complex hardware-and-software organizations, and had experience with satellite connectivity through Kuiper. Those were relevant advantages even though consumer devices and orbital rockets are fundamentally different businesses.
Early reporting said Bezos wanted greater speed on New Glenn and BE-4 engine production. (Early-priority reporting) In a later interview, Limp said he asked Bezos whether Blue Origin was intended to be “a hobby or a business.” That is an attributed interview detail, not a formal corporate mission statement. What problems did Limp inherit?
- New Glenn had not flown. Blue Origin’s heavy-lift orbital rocket had experienced delays and still needed to prove launch, recovery and production at scale.
- BE-4 was strategically important. The engine powers New Glenn and United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan, so production affects Blue Origin and another launch provider.
- Lunar work was time-critical. Blue Origin was developing lunar-lander capabilities for NASA’s Artemis program.
- SpaceX set a demanding benchmark. Its launch cadence and accumulated operational experience made Blue Origin’s goal of becoming a routine provider harder to achieve.
The challenge was industrial as much as technical: convert expensive, long-running programs into reliable testing, manufacturing, launches and customer service without treating rocket engineering like consumer-electronics iteration.
What has happened under Limp?
| Date | Event | What it showed |
|---|---|---|
| January 16, 2025 | New Glenn’s first orbital mission reached orbit, but the reusable first-stage booster was lost during descent. | Orbital delivery was achieved; booster recovery was not. (Blue Origin mission report) |
| November 13, 2025 | The second mission deployed NASA’s ESCAPADE spacecraft into its designated orbit and landed the first stage on Jacklyn. | It demonstrated both payload delivery and booster recovery on one mission. (Blue Origin mission report) |
| April 19, 2026 | The third mission launched, but Blue Origin said preliminary data indicated an upper-stage engine did not produce enough thrust, leaving the payload in the wrong orbit. | The launch was not a total loss, but upper-stage performance and payload insertion remained unresolved. (Mission page) |
| May 28, 2026 | An integrated-vehicle hotfire at Launch Complex 36 caused major infrastructure damage. | Ground-test and pad resilience became immediate constraints on the launch schedule. (Return-to-flight update) |
What caused the 2026 hotfire damage?
In a June 30 update, Limp said early analysis pointed to the aft section of the first stage. Blue Origin reported losing the lightning tower, transporter-erector and hydraulic cylinders, while the tank farm, integration facility, vehicle access tower and water tower remained usable. By August, Blue Origin said hardware recovery and inspections traced the origin to the main oxygen valve on one BE-4 engine. That explanation remains a company assessment unless a later independent or regulatory investigation confirms it. (Blue Origin update; Limp’s account as reported by Space.com)

What is Blue Origin’s plan now?
Blue Origin says it is rebuilding and modifying the LC-36 launch configuration, using a horizontal/vertical hybrid integration approach, continuing production of its seven-by-two New Glenn configuration and expanding test capacity. The company also plans upper-stage hotfire testing at NASA’s Stennis Space Center under a partnership agreement. (Return-to-flight plan; LC-36 updates; Stennis agreement)
Blue Origin’s stated goal is to return New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026. That is a company target, not a guaranteed date: engineering readiness, safety reviews, weather, regulation and range availability can all change it.
How should Limp’s tenure be judged?
The case for his operating model
- Amazon experience can improve production planning, supplier management, metrics and accountability.
- Devices leadership involved tightly integrated hardware, software, manufacturing and reliability work.
- Kuiper experience is relevant to satellite customers and space-infrastructure economics.
- The record now includes real orbital operations and a successful reusable-booster landing, not only development milestones.
Why the appointment is not a shortcut
- Orbital launch systems face physics, testing, safety and regulatory limits that consumer products do not.
- A CEO cannot personally solve propulsion, avionics or range problems.
- Faster schedules can increase risk if engineering and safety discipline do not keep pace.
- Outcomes depend on thousands of employees, suppliers, contractors, customers and government partners, not one executive.
The measurable test still ahead
The central question is whether Blue Origin can sustain dependable, commercially useful operations. Indicators include accurate payload insertion, repeatable booster recovery, a higher launch cadence, reliable BE-4 production and delivery, continued Blue Moon progress and an orderly recovery from the 2026 pad and propulsion setbacks.
Bottom line
Limp has made Blue Origin more operationally visible: New Glenn reached orbit in 2025, landed a booster on its second mission and exposed serious upper-stage and ground-test problems on later flights. By August 2026, that is meaningful progress but not proof of a mature launch business. His defining test remains ahead—turning isolated milestones and recovery plans into safe, repeatable launches.
