GitHub Campus Experts is a student-leadership program, not a scholarship or coding certification. It supports students who build inclusive technical communities through events, workshops, peer learning and open-source work. GitHub’s December 2020 announcement introduced a redesigned application and training experience. The most important current correction is scheduling: GitHub’s documentation now says applications open every July for one month, rather than the February and August windows described in the 2020 announcement.
This guide separates the historical redesign from the current eligibility rules and application steps.
What the Campus Experts Program is
Campus Experts are students who help create technical opportunities at colleges and universities. Their work can include in-person or online conferences, meetups, hackathons, workshops, peer-learning groups, open-source projects and new pathways for students who are underrepresented or otherwise excluded from technical communities. GitHub describes the program and its support on its Campus Experts overview.
The program develops community leadership alongside communication and technical skills. It is separate from the GitHub Student Developer Pack, which verifies student status and provides GitHub and partner offers, and from the institution-level GitHub Campus Program. Pack access is a requirement for Campus Experts, but receiving the Pack does not make someone a Campus Expert.

What GitHub changed in the 2020 redesign
In its announcement published December 10, 2020 (the page was updated July 24, 2024), GitHub said the program had grown from a small group launched in 2016 into a global student network. GitHub reported supporting more than 250 students and receiving tens of thousands of applications at that time. Those are historical figures, not a current membership or application count.
The redesign aimed to make selection more consistent, responses faster and training clearer. Its main elements were:
Four application themes
- Motivation: what drives you to do this work.
- Interest: why Campus Experts is the right program for you.
- Growth and potential: the skills and leadership capacity you want to develop.
- Contribution: the impact you want to make on your campus.
GitHub did not publish a numerical scoring rubric. These themes are useful preparation prompts, not guaranteed weighting criteria.
Two-stage application
The redesigned process combines a written form about your campus community, its challenges and possible opportunities with a video resume that lets GitHub see your motivations and interests as an individual. Under the current process, GitHub invites only applicants who advance after the written stage to submit the video.

Structured training and support
The announcement described a six-week experience covering community analysis, public speaking, technical writing, software development and a community-impact proposal. It also highlighted clearer module instructions, follow-up sessions and events, plus more opportunities for mentorship, peer interaction and connection with existing Campus Experts.
Current documentation still describes six-week training, mentorship and support, but it does not publish a current module-by-module syllabus. Treat the 2020 details as the explanation of the redesign, not a promise that every 2026 cohort will use identical sessions.

- Your GitHub account must be at least six months old.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must be enrolled in a formal higher-education institution.
- You must have more than one year remaining before graduation.
- Your student status must be validated through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.
“More than one year” is literal: someone graduating in approximately 12 months may not qualify. Check your exact status against the live form.
Do not confuse Pack age rules with Campus Experts rules
The Student Developer Pack is available to verified students aged 13 or older, according to its application page. Campus Experts applicants must be 18 or older. Being eligible for the Pack therefore does not establish eligibility for Campus Experts.
How to apply
Prepare your account and verification
- Use a personal GitHub account that has existed for at least six months.
- Apply for and validate the Student Developer Pack.
- Confirm that you are enrolled and have more than one year before graduation.
- Check the Campus Experts site to see whether the July application month is open.
Submit the written application
- Open the Campus Experts site.
- Select Become a Campus Expert.
- When applications are open, select Apply Now.
- Complete the form about your campus community, its needs and possible activities.
- Select Submit Application. A confirmation email may follow.
Complete the video resume if invited
- Read the application-status email and its recording guidance.
- Record with a webcam and computer microphone, or request an alternative method if accessibility is a concern.
- Select Upload video in the email.
- Enter the requested email address, upload the file and select Submit.
GitHub says applicants should receive an update about two weeks after the written window closes, where applicable, with video instructions. It says video submissions take about one week to review.
After acceptance
Accepted students receive an invitation to begin Campus Experts training and join an onboarding call. The training culminates in a community-impact proposal: a practical guide to the activities and goals you plan to pursue, rather than merely a school assignment.

How to prepare a stronger application
GitHub does not publish a scoring formula, so focus on evidence that you understand a real community need and can act on it. Address questions such as:
- Who on your campus is underserved or excluded from technical opportunities?
- What event, learning group, project or inclusion initiative would they actually use?
- What could you personally organize, and which collaborators, room, budget or promotion would you need?
- How would you measure attendance, repeat participation, completed projects or another meaningful outcome?
- Why does this problem matter to you beyond adding a résumé line?
In the video resume, introduce yourself and your motivation. A technical demo alone does not answer the program’s community-leadership purpose.
Signals of a realistic fit
- You can name a specific campus problem rather than proposing “more tech events” generally.
- You have enough time for six weeks of training and follow-up organizing.
- You are willing to learn facilitation, writing and public speaking as well as programming.
- You can describe an achievable first activity and how you would learn from participants.
Warning signs
- Your primary reason is free software access.
- You have no campus community or problem you can clearly describe.
- You expect GitHub to run the community for you.
- You are within roughly one year of graduation or have not completed Pack verification.
Common problems and practical fixes
Student status cannot be verified
An academic email is not always available or recognized. GitHub’s student-verification guidance lists documents such as a current student ID, class schedule, transcript, or enrollment or affiliation letter. Some applicants may need an academic email; if the institution does not issue one, provide documentation explaining that policy. Partner offers in the Pack have their own terms and can change, as GitHub explains in its Pack terms.
No webcam or microphone
GitHub says a basic webcam and computer microphone are sufficient. If you cannot use them because of accessibility needs, contact the Education team through the instructions in the application email to request an alternative submission method.

You missed the window
Do not rely on the old February or August schedule. The current documentation points to July; monitor the live Campus Experts page for the next opening.
You are comparing the wrong GitHub program
Campus Experts is an individual student leadership program. The Student Developer Pack is a verification-and-benefits program. The Campus Program provides institution-level GitHub Enterprise access. Their purposes and eligibility are different.
Is it worth applying?
Apply if you want to organize inclusive technical activity and can commit time to training and follow-through. The stated value is leadership development, communication practice, mentorship and the opportunity to build something useful for peers. Acceptance is not guaranteed, and GitHub does not promise a job, income or a particular career result.
You do not need to buy a camera, premium software or a course to apply. Pack offers such as Codespaces or learning and collaboration tools may help with workshops, but they are optional; availability, quotas and partner terms can change. Check the live Pack listing before relying on any offer.
