9 Apps That Pay You Real Money (Cash, Cash Back, and Flexible Work)

Nine legitimate money-making apps compared by payout method, effort, timing, earning potential and drawbacks—from Ibotta and Rakuten to DoorDash, Rover and Prolific.

These apps can produce money you can withdraw—or useful gift cards—but they do not all work the same way. Swagbucks and InboxDollars pay for surveys and offers; Ibotta, Rakuten, and Upside reduce the cost of purchases you already plan to make; DoorDash and Rover pay for hands-on local work; UserTesting and Prolific pay for research participation. Rewards apps usually produce modest, irregular amounts, while gig work has a higher ceiling but also real costs, taxes, and risk.

“Real money” here means a bank deposit, PayPal payment, check, or cash-equivalent gift card. A rebate is not income if you spend unnecessarily to earn it, and a promotional bonus is not normal earnings unless you complete its conditions.

Quick comparison

App Best for How it pays Effort Cash-out details Main catch
Swagbucks Broad rewards PayPal or gift cards Low to moderate 100 SB = $1; rewards from 300 SB, depending on reward Points, eligibility, and offer supply vary
InboxDollars Cash-focused surveys and offers PayPal, Visa, or gift cards Low to moderate $15 first payment request; $10 later requests Terms, validation, and screen-outs apply
Ibotta Grocery savings Bank, PayPal, or gift cards Low $20 balance, qualifying redemption, and seven-day wait You must buy eligible products
Rakuten Online shopping cash back PayPal, check, points, or gift cards Low $5.01 confirmed cash back for standard payment; payments every three months Tracking and merchant confirmation can take weeks
Upside Fuel and participating merchants Bank, PayPal, or gift cards Low Requests usually process in 24–48 hours; bank transfers generally take five to seven business days Withdrawals under $15 may incur a $1 fee
DoorDash Flexible delivery work Direct deposit and eligible faster options High Weekly deposits generally cover the prior Monday–Sunday period, then take two to three processing days Vehicle, fuel, insurance, unpaid time, and taxes
UserTesting Usability feedback Contributor payout method Moderate Depends on current contributor terms Screeners and test demand are unpredictable
Rover Dog walking and pet care Platform payout after services High Timing and fees depend on current terms Local demand, approval, safety, and cancellations
Prolific Academic and market studies Platform cash payout Low to moderate Current minimum and processing rules can change Eligibility and study supply fluctuate

Thresholds and processing times are policy details, not guarantees of earnings. Check the linked help pages before relying on a particular method.

How to judge “real money” apps

  • Cash accessibility: Bank, PayPal, or checks are more flexible than restricted gift cards.
  • Net value: Subtract required spending, fuel, mileage, supplies, fees, and unpaid time.
  • Pending versus withdrawable: A displayed balance may still be under review or reversible.
  • Availability: Rewards depend on offers and qualification; gig work depends on local demand.
  • Privacy and effort: Surveys, location data, recordings, identity checks, and client contact all have costs.

A legitimate platform explains its revenue model, eligibility, payout rules, support process, and privacy policy. It should not require an upfront payment to unlock ordinary tasks or ask for cryptocurrency deposits. Legitimate does not mean lucrative, error-free, or available to everyone.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon eGift Card - Amazon Logo
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

1. Swagbucks: best broad rewards app

Swagbucks combines surveys, shopping, games, and promotional offers. Its internal currency is SB: the official help center says 100 SB equals $1, and some rewards can be redeemed from 300 SB. Redemption options include PayPal and gift cards, with the exact choice and threshold depending on the reward. See Swagbucks’ payout help and eligibility rules.

Swagbucks is useful when you want several types of small tasks in one account, not when you need a predictable wage. Survey screen-outs, changing offer values, and limited availability are normal. The company says it has paid members more than $200 million; that cumulative company-reported figure is not a forecast for an individual. U.S. residents age 13 or older may participate subject to the terms. Start at Swagbucks.

2. InboxDollars: best cash-focused rewards alternative

InboxDollars offers surveys, shopping, games, emails, and app offers. Its support page says the first payment request requires at least $15 and later requests at least $10; PayPal and gift-card processing is described as about three business days when account conditions are met. Details are in the payment instructions and payment terms.

Read every offer before starting. InboxDollars warns that a previous installation, third-party cookies, ad blockers, another affiliate source, or incomplete conditions can prevent credit; keep screenshots and completion proof (offer-tracking guidance). Its landing page may show a conditional signup promotion, but bonuses can require email confirmation, additional qualifying earnings, new-user status, and a deadline. Treat any displayed amount as temporary, not ordinary income. See the current site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Ibotta: best for groceries you already buy

Ibotta provides purchase-linked cash back through offers, bonuses, and referrals. It is a spending-reduction tool, not a job: the reward is valuable only when the purchase was already necessary. The current help center sets a $20 withdrawal threshold. You must also redeem at least one qualifying offer and wait seven days after the first offer redemption or gift-card purchase. Once qualified, withdrawals may go to a supported bank account, PayPal, or gift card; delivery can take zero to five days depending on method.

Rank #2
Amazon eGift Card - Happy Birthday
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

Review how earnings work and withdrawal requirements. Activate offers, follow product and quantity terms, and retain receipts. Do not drive to another store or buy unwanted items merely to chase a rebate. Install through Ibotta’s official site.

4. Rakuten: best for online shopping cash back

Rakuten pays cash back when you start at its website, app, or browser extension, activate the offer, and complete a tracked purchase. Confirmed cash back can be paid by PayPal, check, Bilt Points, eligible American Express Membership Rewards points, or certain gift cards. Standard payments are issued every three months after at least $5.01 in confirmed cash back; gift-card redemption requires at least $5 confirmed cash back and may arrive within minutes.

Online and in-store rewards commonly take three to 14 weeks to become confirmed, and travel purchases can take longer. Returns, exclusions, another coupon or rewards portal, blocked cookies, and merchant reporting delays can reduce or eliminate credit. Read how Rakuten works, payment choices, getting-paid rules, and terms and conditions. The key habit is simple: activate before checkout.

5. Upside: best for fuel and routine merchant purchases

Upside offers cash back at participating fuel stations, restaurants, and retailers. You can withdraw through a connected bank account, PayPal, or gift card. Its support page says most requests process within 24–48 hours, while bank transfers generally take five to seven business days; account information must be verified through an email link. Cashing out less than $15 may incur a $1 fee. Check the cash-out rules and current offers.

Upside makes sense when the location and purchase already fit your route. A longer drive, extra meal, or larger purchase can erase the rebate. Availability and offer amounts vary by merchant and location.

Rank #3
Amazon eGift Card - Birthday Wishes
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

6. DoorDash Dasher: highest ceiling, with real operating costs

DoorDash pays delivery workers through base pay, customer tips, and promotions such as Challenges, Peak Pay, or Boosts. DoorDash says per-offer base pay can range from $2 to $10 or more depending on time, distance, and desirability. Weekly direct deposit generally covers the prior Monday–Sunday period and then has a stated two- to three-day processing period. Faster options have eligibility, debit-card, fee, and market restrictions; see pay calculation and Dasher help.

Gross app earnings are not take-home pay. Before deciding whether a shift worked, subtract fuel, maintenance, depreciation, parking, tolls, insurance, and unpaid time between orders. Keep mileage and expense records and set aside money for contractor taxes; tax treatment varies by circumstances and jurisdiction. Demand, tips, and incentives change by neighborhood and time. Apply through the official Dasher site.

7. UserTesting: paid usability feedback

UserTesting connects contributors with usability studies that may involve recording your screen, voice, or camera while completing tasks. It is active research work, not passive income. You must pass the platform’s current practice and screening process, and invitations depend on demographic matching and client demand. A high advertised test value does not mean you will receive that volume.

Because contributor age, country availability, payment method, timing, practice-test treatment, and rejection rules can change, verify each point in the current contributor page and support center before applying. The main site is UserTesting. Protect private information when a test asks you to browse real accounts or products.

8. Rover: local pet-care work

Rover is a marketplace for dog walking, sitting, boarding, and house sitting. It can out-earn rewards apps because customers pay for a service, but your ceiling depends on local demand, reviews, schedule, pet-care skill, and the ability to handle meet-and-greets, cancellations, and safety issues. Approval, background checks, service fees, payout timing, cancellation policies, and guarantee or insurance limits are current-policy questions.

Rank #4
Amazon Physical Gift Card in a Gift Box - Better than Gold - Black
  • Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
  • Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
  • Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box
  • Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
  • Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App

Read the sitter application page, Rover support, and the main site before setting prices. Account for transportation, supplies, unpaid client communication, and the possibility that a booking occupies your home or schedule. Do not move payments off-platform contrary to current terms.

9. Prolific: paid academic and market studies

Prolific lists research studies matched to participant profiles. It can be a better fit than general survey panels for readers who want study-based tasks, but inventory is irregular and eligibility varies. Do not assume a high displayed reward represents a steady hourly schedule; screening, waitlists, onboarding limits, and researcher review can affect access.

Confirm current country and age rules, minimum cash-out, payment method, processing time, rejection policy, and minimum-reward policy in the participant page and participant help. The official site is Prolific.

Which app should you choose?

  • Already shop online: Rakuten, provided you activate the offer before buying.
  • Already buying groceries: Ibotta, if the offer matches your normal list.
  • Already buying fuel: Upside, while avoiding extra driving and small-withdrawal fees.
  • Want surveys and varied offers: Swagbucks or InboxDollars.
  • Want higher potential and can work locally: DoorDash or Rover.
  • Comfortable recording product feedback: UserTesting.
  • Prefer academic studies: Prolific.

Use one or two platforms that match your routine rather than opening every account and chasing every promotion.

Tracking and cash-out checklist

  1. Read eligibility, expiration, product, and payment terms first.
  2. Activate a shopping or app offer before checkout or installation.
  3. Do not combine reward portals, coupons, or affiliate links unless the terms allow it.
  4. Disable nothing blindly, but note that ad blockers, privacy settings, and blocked cookies can prevent attribution.
  5. Save offer screenshots, order confirmations, receipts, and completion milestones.
  6. Avoid VPNs, duplicate accounts, and previously installed apps when an offer requires a new user.
  7. Check whether the balance is pending, confirmed, or withdrawable.
  8. Make sure your PayPal name and email match the earning account and complete bank verification.
  9. Wait for stated review periods; a refund, return, cancellation, or chargeback can reverse rewards.
  10. Never pay to unlock ordinary earnings or give a fake support account a verification code.

Common failure modes and scam signs

Offers do not credit

The usual causes are missing activation, another referral source, blocked tracking, prior installation, or failure to meet an exact condition. InboxDollars documents these risks at its app-offer help page. Submit proof through the platform’s support process rather than repeatedly attempting the offer.

Amazon Physical Gift Card in a Mini Envelope - Candlelight Celebration
  • Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
  • Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
  • Gift Card is affixed inside a mini envelope
  • Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
  • Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App

Surveys and studies screen you out

Screen-outs, sparse regional inventory, identity checks, and account reviews are normal. Judge a platform by completed, withdrawable earnings—not its maximum advertised reward.

Cash-out is delayed

Common reasons include an unmet minimum, pending balance, mismatched payment details, an unfinished waiting period, or a reversed underlying purchase. Read the payout policy before treating a displayed balance as spendable.

Gig work looks profitable but is not

Gross revenue can hide fuel, depreciation, supplies, insurance, taxes, cancellations, and unpaid waiting. Calculate net earnings for a shift or booking.

Red flags

  • Upfront payment or cryptocurrency deposit.
  • Guaranteed high income for trivial effort.
  • Requests for banking passwords or one-time codes.
  • Recruiting as the primary way to earn.
  • Distribution outside reputable app stores without a clear reason.
  • Pressure to move payment or communication off-platform.

Bottom line

Choose by use case, not by a universal “best” ranking. Cash-back apps are easiest but mainly reduce spending. Survey and study apps can produce small, irregular payments. UserTesting may pay more per completed task but has uncertain availability. DoorDash and Rover offer the highest potential here because they pay for labor, while also imposing the highest costs and responsibilities.
