Starship Technologies announced on February 6, 2024, that it raised $90 million, taking its reported cumulative funding to $230 million. The company also said its sidewalk robots had completed more than six million deliveries in about 80 locations across the United States and Europe. That is a meaningful operating milestone, but it is not public proof of audited company-wide profitability or a replacement for conventional last-mile logistics.
What Starship announced
Starship’s funding announcement said the $90 million round was co-led by existing investors Plural and Iconical. The company did not disclose a valuation. Its stated uses for the capital included geographic expansion, faster robot production, software and logistics investment, and wireless-charging infrastructure.
The company described the $230 million figure as total funding since its 2014 founding. The announcement does not break that amount into equity, debt, or other financing types, so it should not automatically be treated as $230 million of equity capital. Starship’s announcement and TechCrunch’s report both identify the round and investors.
| Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| $90 million | New funding announced February 6, 2024 |
| $230 million | Company-reported cumulative funding since 2014; financing mix not stated |
| More than 6 million | Company-reported cumulative deliveries |
| Approximately 80 | Company-reported operating locations, not necessarily 80 cities |
| Valuation | Not disclosed |
What Starship actually sells
Starship is primarily a delivery service, not a consumer robot manufacturer. Its small, low-speed autonomous ground vehicles carry relatively compact orders—such as prepared food, groceries, tools, and documents—along sidewalks and pedestrian paths. Partners can offer the service through their own ordering and delivery channels.

Reported partners have included Bolt, Co-op, Aramark, Sodexo, Chartwells, and Grubhub. Coverage describes the arrangement as delivery-as-a-service: Starship supplies the fleet and operating technology while partners connect it to food, grocery, campus, or local-delivery demand. Public reports do not specify whether each customer pays per delivery, per robot, through a managed-service contract, or under another pricing model. They also do not establish who pays in every deployment for charging, loading, maintenance, insurance, permits, or customer support.
Where the robots operated
Starship said it operated in six markets: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, and Finland. The company’s roughly 80 locations include campuses, neighborhoods, and local operating zones. An “80 locations” figure therefore should not be read as 80 large metropolitan areas.
Campuses and dense neighborhoods are a logical starting point because they combine short routes, repeated destinations, concentrated demand, existing food-service partners, and relatively predictable maps. They allow a fleet to be monitored in a bounded area. That is useful commercial evidence, but it does not automatically demonstrate that the same economics work across an unconstrained city.
What six million deliveries prove—and what they do not
More than six million completed deliveries show that Starship has operated for years and handled substantial real-world repetition. They are stronger evidence of operational durability than a small pilot or demonstration.

The public announcement does not say whether a “delivery” means a completed customer order or another unit of robot activity. It also does not disclose the metrics needed to judge financial performance:
- Average distance and delivery time.
- Delivery failure, theft, damage, and cancellation rates.
- How often a person intervened.
- Revenue and gross or contribution margin per delivery.
- Number of active robots and utilization per robot.
- How many deliveries occurred on campuses versus public streets.
Starship has been described as profitable, but that claim comes from the company and its executives. TechCrunch reported the claim without financial statements, margins, a definition of profitability, or audited company-wide results. “Profitable” could mean positive contribution margin in selected markets, an operating unit that covers its direct costs, EBITDA profitability, or another measure. The available evidence does not identify which.
How autonomous are the robots?
TechCrunch reported that Starship’s robots were operating at Level 4 and typically had about 18 hours of battery life in February 2024. VentureBeat described the system as 99% autonomous. These descriptions are time-specific and should not be assumed to describe every later robot generation.
Neither label means that a robot never needs human help. Four different layers matter:

Onboard autonomy
The robot navigates, detects obstacles, follows a route, and stops or reroutes when its sensors identify a problem.
Remote assistance
A human may resolve an unusual situation, such as a blocked sidewalk, construction barrier, ambiguous crossing, animal, vandalism attempt, or uncertain delivery address.
Operational autonomy
The key business question is how many robots one person can supervise, how frequently interventions occur, and how long each intervention takes. A LinkedIn post attributed to former Starship executive Henry Harris-Burland said one human could oversee “tens or hundreds” of robots, but that is an executive statement rather than independently verified operating data. Read the statement.
End-to-end autonomy
Even if travel is automated, loading, customer authentication, exception handling, recovery, maintenance, and support may still require people. “Autonomous” therefore does not mean labor-free.

Why sidewalk robots can have an economic advantage
Compared with autonomous cars or vans, a sidewalk robot uses a smaller vehicle, less energy, lower speeds, and a narrower operating area. It does not carry a passenger, and short routes may allow one remote operator to supervise multiple units. TechCrunch noted that these characteristics can reduce some of the safety and unit-economic burdens facing road-going autonomous vehicles.
The trade-off is limited capacity and range. Robots carry much smaller orders, move more slowly, and depend on usable sidewalks, curb ramps, crossings, and local permission to operate. Their economics improve when many orders occur within a compact area and decline when robots spend time idle or traveling long distances.
The cost questions investors and operators still need answered
A serious deployment analysis compares total delivered cost with the alternatives, not merely a robot’s purchase price or a courier’s wage.
| Cost or requirement | Why it affects viability |
|---|---|
| Fleet hardware and depreciation | Robots must earn enough over their useful lives to cover manufacturing and replacement. |
| Charging and electricity | Wireless chargers and power use add infrastructure and operating costs. |
| Remote supervision | Intervention frequency determines how much labor the service still requires. |
| Loading, maintenance, and recovery | Robots need people to load orders, repair faults, and retrieve stranded units. |
| Insurance, permits, and liability | Local rules and incident exposure can materially change deployment costs. |
| Integration and support | Ordering, dispatch, notifications, refunds, and partner systems require ongoing work. |
| Utilization | Low order density leaves expensive robots idle and weakens unit economics. |
Public coverage does not disclose Starship’s utilization target, pricing, intervention rate, or delivery-level margin. Without those figures, six million deliveries cannot by itself establish a scalable financial model.

Why the 2024 raise mattered
The financing arrived while autonomous delivery was under pressure. TechCrunch cited shutdowns or retrenchment involving efforts associated with FedEx and Amazon, as well as restructuring at Nuro. Against that backdrop, investors were backing a company that said it had moved beyond pilots and established repeatable operations.
That timing supports a narrower interpretation: Starship appeared unusually durable within sidewalk robotics. It does not show that the company had eliminated the sector’s technical, regulatory, or commercial risks, and the investors’ specific rationale was not disclosed.
Limits on scaling
Operational limits
- Snow, ice, flooding, severe weather, and steep terrain.
- Construction, blocked sidewalks, missing curb ramps, and difficult road crossings.
- High pedestrian density and conflicts with wheelchairs, mobility aids, strollers, or service animals.
- Battery, range, loading, maintenance, and stranded-robot recovery constraints.
- Vandalism, theft, tampering, and deliberate misuse.
Commercial limits
- Too few orders in a service area to keep robots utilized.
- Customers unwilling to pay enough to cover the full service cost.
- Partner integration, campus procurement, and long sales cycles.
- Local staffing and customer-support requirements that reduce labor savings.
Regulatory and social limits
Sidewalk robots share public space with pedestrians. Operators must address right-of-way, accessibility, road-crossing rules, permits, insurance, and liability after collisions or property damage. Public acceptance can also interrupt service: VentureBeat reported that Starship’s autonomous food-delivery service at Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus was suspended in 2023 after a bomb scare. VentureBeat’s report illustrates how a security incident can halt operations even when the underlying vehicle is functioning.
How the alternatives compare
| Model | Main strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Human couriers | Flexible routes, larger loads, and broad exception handling | Labor cost can be high for short, predictable trips |
| Sidewalk robots | Potentially lower labor and energy cost on short, dense routes | Slow, low-capacity, and dependent on sidewalks and local rules |
| Autonomous cars or vans | Greater range and payload | More demanding road safety, liability, and unit economics |
| Drones | Fast travel and possible reach to difficult locations | Airspace, weather, payload, landing-zone, and acceptance constraints |
| Pickup or micro-fulfillment | Can reduce delivery distance | Requires local facilities or customers willing to collect orders |
What the funding changes
The capital gives Starship more ability to add locations, manufacture robots, improve software and logistics, and install charging infrastructure. It may allow the company to deepen a focused campus-and-neighborhood strategy rather than pursue every type of delivery at once.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt does not, on the public evidence, establish a valuation, investor return case, or proof that the company is profitable across all markets. The most defensible conclusion is that Starship has achieved meaningful repeated commercial operation and may have positive economics in selected environments. Whether that becomes venture-scale, broadly urban delivery remains dependent on utilization, intervention labor, regulation, accessibility, reliability, and customer demand.
A practical diligence checklist
Businesses evaluating Starship or a similar provider should request:
- Orders per robot per day and the break-even utilization level.
- Interventions per delivery, average intervention time, and robots per operator.
- Delivery success, theft, damage, cancellation, and refund rates.
- Responsibilities for loading, charging, maintenance, recovery, insurance, and permits.
- Service performance in the target weather, terrain, sidewalk, and crossing conditions.
- Integration requirements for ordering, dispatch, payment, notifications, and support.
- Customer-accessibility procedures and liability allocation after an incident.
One unresolved distance claim
TechCrunch reported that Starship’s robots had traveled 11 million miles. A Starship executive’s LinkedIn post referred to 11 million kilometers instead. Those figures are materially different—11 million miles is about 17.7 million kilometers—and the available announcement does not resolve the discrepancy. The delivery count is therefore the safer milestone to use without qualification. See the company-linked post alongside TechCrunch’s account.
