Short answer: a one-time Office 2024 purchase can beat a Microsoft 365 subscription for one person using one computer who needs stable Word, Excel, PowerPoint and (if applicable) Outlook. It is not automatically the cheapest choice: you give up cloud storage, multi-device access, family sharing and continuous feature upgrades. Microsoft calls the product a one-time purchase, not a lifetime license. “Lifetime” means no recurring payment for that release—not free access to every future Office version or perpetual support.
What “lifetime Office” actually means
Office 2024 is licensed perpetually for the purchased release. After installation and activation, you can continue using that version without renewing a subscription, subject to activation, operating-system compatibility and Microsoft’s licensing terms. Microsoft says one-time purchases do not include an upgrade option or new features after purchase. A later major release must be bought separately. See Microsoft’s comparison of Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 and its Office 2024 FAQ.
- One-time purchase: pay once for a defined Office edition.
- Perpetual license: continued use of that release, not ownership of future releases.
- Subscription: recurring payment in exchange for the current apps, services and plan benefits while subscribed.
- “Lifetime”: informal marketing language that should never be read as a promise of lifetime updates, support or compatibility.
Which edition would you actually buy?
| Edition | Apps | Use and devices | U.S. Store price signal (Aug. 18, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote | One PC or Mac; listed for non-commercial use | $149.99 in one current listing; another captured listing showed $179.99, so check the live page |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote | One PC or Mac; home or business use | $249.99 |
Product pages: Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024. Prices, tax, promotions and regional availability can change. Home 2024’s non-commercial designation makes it inappropriate to recommend automatically for paid freelance or business work; examine Home & Business or a business plan instead.
The break-even math
The basic calculation is:
Break-even months = one-time price ÷ comparable monthly subscription price

Using the $9.99 monthly figure displayed in the cited Microsoft Store results (not a universal Personal or Family price):
| Purchase | One-time price | Monthly comparison | Nominal break-even |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home 2024 | $149.99 | $9.99 | About 15 months |
| Home & Business 2024 | $249.99 | $9.99 | About 25 months |
At that same monthly rate, the arithmetic looks like this:

These are nominal comparisons, not guaranteed savings. They exclude taxes, annual-plan discounts, promotions, the value of 1 TB OneDrive storage, mobile and browser access, family sharing, and the possibility of buying another Office release later. Compare the exact Microsoft 365 plan, billing term, number of users and devices before deciding.
What Office 2024 gives you—and what it removes
Benefits of the one-time version
- Installed desktop applications with a stable feature set.
- Offline work after installation and activation.
- No monthly renewal for the purchased release.
- A predictable cost for a one-computer user.
- Microsoft support resources and compatibility with supported Windows and Mac systems.
Benefits you leave behind
- New feature releases and automatic entitlement to the next major version.
- Up to 1 TB of OneDrive storage per user included with applicable Microsoft 365 plans.
- Use across multiple PCs, Macs, tablets and phones.
- Family sharing on plans that provide it.
- Subscription-linked collaboration, cloud services and any included Copilot or other AI benefits.
Office 2024 can receive security updates, but Microsoft distinguishes those from new features. Cloud documents, real-time collaboration and other online services still require an internet connection.

When switching is financially sensible
The purchase is easiest to justify when one person uses one main computer, needs classic desktop apps, does not need Outlook (for Home 2024), already has backup or cloud storage elsewhere, and expects to keep the same release for at least two or three years. It also suits people who prefer a fixed cost and dislike interface or feature changes.
Microsoft 365 can be better value for a family or anyone using several devices. A one-PC license should not be compared with a subscription serving multiple people without calculating cost per person and device. Storage has value too: if you would otherwise pay for OneDrive or another backup service, subtract that avoided cost from the subscription’s effective price.

Office Home 2024, Home & Business, or Microsoft 365?
| Your situation | Most logical starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One student or retiree, one computer, basic documents, no Outlook | Office Home 2024 | Lower upfront cost and sufficient desktop apps, provided use is non-commercial |
| Freelancer or small-business user, one computer, Outlook required | Home & Business 2024 | Includes Outlook and permits home or business use |
| Several people or devices | Microsoft 365 Family or another appropriate plan | Sharing and multi-device access can outweigh the perpetual license’s lower total |
| Frequent collaborators or users wanting the newest features | Microsoft 365 | Current apps, cloud services and ongoing updates |
| Occasional browser editing only | Free Microsoft 365 for the web | No installed-app purchase when basic web features are enough |
Business users needing managed accounts, compliance or centralized administration should compare Microsoft 365 business plans, not a consumer family subscription.

Your Office 2024 installation remains Office 2024. It does not silently become Office 2027 or another future release. A subscription user receives the current version while the subscription remains active; a perpetual-license user must decide whether the next release is worth buying. Ask yourself: will I be satisfied with this feature set four or five years from now? If not, include the likely future purchase in your total-cost estimate.
Best Value
- Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation
“Forever” also cannot guarantee that every future Windows or macOS release, add-in or file workflow will remain compatible. Keep the product’s lifecycle and your operating system’s support policy in view without assuming a perpetual license means perpetual security support.
Installation, activation and moving to another computer
- Buy from Microsoft or a clearly authorized retailer and retain the invoice.
- Use the Microsoft account associated with checkout.
- Open that account’s Services & subscriptions area and download the Office installer.
- Install the included applications, then open one and sign in or enter activation details if prompted.
- Confirm that the displayed edition matches Home or Home & Business 2024.
- Save your receipt, account credentials and product information.
Reinstallation is tied to the purchasing account. A one-PC/Mac license is not a multi-device license, and moving it to a replacement computer may be restricted by the applicable terms. If activation is confused, check the original account before buying another key, remove conflicting trial or subscription installations, and use Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting guidance.
Beware “lifetime key” listings
Official retail Office 2024 is different from unusually cheap listings promising “permanent activation,” “Professional Plus retail,” one key for multiple PCs or an account-bound license. A low price does not prove that the edition is authorized for your region, transferable, intended for home use or unlikely to be revoked. Sellers may be offering volume-license keys or activation arrangements whose rights are difficult to verify.
- Prefer Microsoft’s official product pages or a clearly authorized retailer.
- Request the exact edition, license type, region, invoice and transfer rights.
- Treat “lifetime updates” claims skeptically; Microsoft says one-time purchases have no upgrade option.
- Do not assume a key that activates today grants commercial rights or future reinstalls.
Free and lower-cost alternatives
- Microsoft 365 for the web: free browser versions for occasional editing; fewer desktop features and cloud dependence.
- LibreOffice: free, open-source desktop suite; Microsoft-format fidelity, macros and collaboration can vary.
- ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors: familiar interface and Microsoft-format focus, but a different ecosystem and feature set.
- Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: strong browser collaboration, with possible formatting and advanced-compatibility trade-offs.
A practical decision checklist
- How many people need the apps?
- How many computers, tablets and phones will they use?
- Is the work personal, educational or commercial?
- Do you need Outlook?
- Would 1 TB of OneDrive storage replace another expense?
- Are continuous updates, Copilot or advanced collaboration important?
- How long will you keep the same Office release?
- Are you comfortable paying separately for a future major version?
- Could a free web or open-source suite handle your files?
The Bottom Line
Buy the one-time version when you need classic Office apps on one computer, can live without subscription services and expect to use the same release for at least two years. Stay with Microsoft 365 when you need several users or devices, Outlook plus cloud storage, collaboration, administration or continuous feature updates. The “lifetime” label describes the payment model for one release—not unlimited Office forever.
