Choose WooCommerce on managed WordPress hosting when ownership and customization matter more than convenience. Hostinger is the low-cost WooCommerce entry point, SiteGround emphasizes managed backups and migrations, Bluehost packages a beginner-friendly setup, and BigCommerce is better suited to complex catalogs, B2B, and multichannel growth.
Those products are not identical kinds of “hosting.” Shopify and BigCommerce are complete hosted commerce platforms; Hostinger, SiteGround, and Bluehost primarily host WordPress and WooCommerce. Your best choice depends on technical responsibility, payment economics, catalog complexity, traffic, and how portable you want the store to be.
Hosted commerce platform or WooCommerce hosting?
| Question | Hosted platform (Shopify, BigCommerce) | WooCommerce hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Who manages infrastructure? | The platform provider manages servers, core updates, security controls, and availability. | The host manages server infrastructure; you or your administrator manage much of WordPress, WooCommerce, themes, and plugins. |
| Checkout | Built into the commerce platform. | Added through WooCommerce and one or more payment gateways. |
| Control | Less server-level control, but fewer operational tasks. | More control over code, database, themes, and extensions. |
| Maintenance burden | Lower, although apps, content, accounts, and integrations still need attention. | Higher: updates, compatibility, backups, security, and troubleshooting are your responsibility or your agency’s. |
| Portability | Products and orders can usually be exported, but checkout logic, themes, app data, and customer accounts may remain platform-dependent. | Database, files, media, and domain are generally portable between hosts. |
| Pricing model | Subscription plus payment, app, and possible transaction fees. | Hosting plus payment processing, extensions, maintenance, and development. |
Shopify is technically hosting: its plans include secure commerce hosting, unlimited bandwidth, custom-domain support, and free SSL, so a standard store does not need separate web hosting (Shopify pricing). It is better understood as a complete commerce operating platform that includes hosting, not as a $3 web-hosting substitute.

How to choose an e-commerce host
Store model and technical ability
If you do not want server, plugin, and security work, use a hosted platform. If you need WordPress publishing, custom code, or database access, managed WooCommerce is usually the better fit.

Total cost of ownership
Compare more than the advertised monthly rate. Include the introductory and renewal prices, billing commitment, domain renewal, payment processing, platform transaction fees, premium themes and extensions, backups, security, email, tax and shipping tools, developer time, and migration costs. Promotions and regional taxes change, so confirm the checkout total.
Performance capacity
Storage and “unlimited traffic” do not reveal checkout capacity. Ask about CPU, memory, PHP workers, concurrent processes, database limits, object caching, CDN behavior, server region, staging, and traffic-spike policies. Cart, checkout, account, and search pages are dynamic and cannot be treated like cached blog pages.
Security, payments, and compliance
Check HTTPS/TLS, malware scanning, a web application firewall, DDoS controls, two-factor authentication, update policies, account isolation, backup encryption, and payment tokenization. SSL encrypts connections but does not prevent vulnerable plugins, stolen credentials, malware, unsafe scripts, or fraudulent orders. Shopify says its hosted stores are PCI compliant by default; a self-hosted WooCommerce implementation has shared responsibilities across the merchant, host, software, and payment provider. Neither a free certificate nor a host’s marketing claim automatically makes the complete store PCI compliant.
Backups and restoration
“Daily backups” is incomplete information. Confirm whether the database is included, where copies are stored, retention length, downloadable copies, restore scope and cost, pre-update snapshots, and disaster-recovery geography. Test a staging restore before launch and after major changes.
Support and portability
Determine whether support is 24/7, which channels are available, whether agents understand WooCommerce checkout incidents, and how escalation works. For WooCommerce, verify database and media exports, DNS control, SFTP/SSH or WP-CLI access, and the ability to move hosts. For SaaS, document what happens to URLs, subscriptions, customer accounts, theme customizations, app data, and analytics history if you leave.

Shopify: best overall for most beginners
Shopify bundles hosting, SSL, bandwidth, checkout, product and order management, and a large app ecosystem. It removes most server maintenance, making the subscription premium potentially worthwhile when your alternative is paying for technical help.
Published US pricing observed around August 16, 2026
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29/month | $39/month |
| Grow | $79/month | $105/month |
| Advanced | $299/month | $399/month |
| Plus | From $2,300/month | Custom contract |
The pricing page displayed a temporary three-day trial followed by $1/month for three months. US online card rates shown began at 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, with lower published rates on higher plans. If you use a third-party provider instead of Shopify Payments, the displayed additional transaction fees were 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, and 0.6% on Advanced. Shopify Payments is not available in every country, and payment features vary by region. See the official pricing page before buying.
Who should choose it
Choose Shopify for a new or growing store that values guided setup, managed checkout, reliable operations, and minimal plugin maintenance.
Who should not
It is a poor fit when you require deep server control, unusual self-managed workflows, or want to avoid SaaS and third-party payment dependencies.
WooCommerce: best for ownership and WordPress flexibility
WooCommerce core is free and open source with no WooCommerce revenue share. It is not free e-commerce in practice: you separately pay for hosting, payment processing, themes, extensions, backups, security, maintenance, and development. WooCommerce estimates hosting for most stores at roughly $25–$350 per month, depending on traffic and performance needs; extensions commonly cost $29–$299 per year each (WooCommerce pricing).

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
A practical cost model is:
Total cost = hosting + domain + payment processing + extensions + theme + backups/security + maintenance/development + email, tax, shipping, and marketing tools.
WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+, and HTTPS (WordPress requirements). WooCommerce documentation recommends PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+, current WordPress/WooCommerce versions, and HTTPS (WooCommerce update documentation). Where the baselines differ, use the newer compatible version when possible.
Hostinger Managed WooCommerce: budget pick
Hostinger’s referenced plan started at approximately $3.79 per month and listed 200 GB NVMe storage, a free domain, unlimited free SSL certificates, CDN, daily backups, automatic updates, DDoS mitigation, malware and vulnerability scanning, 100 email addresses, and WooCommerce-oriented setup (Hostinger Managed WooCommerce).
This is attractive for a small first store with light traffic. Treat the displayed amount as a promotional starting signal, not a lifetime price. Before purchasing, check the renewal rate, required term, CPU and PHP-worker limits, backup retention and restoration, refund rules, and support depth. A low price does not establish high checkout capacity or enterprise incident response.
SiteGround WooCommerce: managed features and backup emphasis
SiteGround lists automatic WooCommerce setup, free SSL, CDN, migrations, business email, and daily backup coverage described as 30 geo-distributed copies—one for each day over the prior 30 days. Its page also states 99.9% uptime with enterprise reliability (SiteGround WooCommerce hosting).

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
It suits owners who value managed setup, migration help, and documented backup coverage more than the absolute lowest introductory price. Confirm renewal pricing, resource ceilings, restore procedures, and whether the uptime language is a contractual service commitment or marketing claim; it is not independent uptime measurement.

Bluehost says WordPress and WooCommerce can be pre-installed, with an e-commerce offer starting at approximately $6.99 per month on the referenced page. It advertises an included commerce plugin suite and no Bluehost platform transaction fee (Bluehost e-commerce hosting). That does not make card processing free: gateways still charge their own fees.
Bluehost is a reasonable first WooCommerce path for someone who wants preconfiguration and commerce tools. Check renewal pricing, what is included for one site, add-on costs for additional sites, staging, backups, malware protection, and the actual resource limits. Its comparison guidance also highlights automatic installation, SSL, CDN, object caching, staging, daily backups, PCI support, and WordPress support as criteria to verify (Bluehost WooCommerce comparison).

BigCommerce is a hosted commerce platform with catalog, sales-channel, and B2B capabilities that can suit a growing operation. Its 2026 pricing requires modeling gross merchandise value (GMV), not just subscription cost.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Published GMV signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | $39/month | $29/month | Up to $30,000 trailing-12-month GMV |
| Growth | $105/month | $79/month | Up to $100,000 trailing-12-month GMV |
| Scale | $399/month | $299/month | Up to $33,333/month; 0.9% overage above the stated cap |
| Performance | Custom | From $1,499/month annually | Custom terms |
BigCommerce states that GMV uses gross order value minus 10%. Published open-provider fees were 2.0% on Core, 1.0% on Growth, and 0.6% on Scale; orders processed through embedded payment providers are not subject to that open-provider fee. Published US card processing began at 2.89% + $0.29 per transaction through the referenced PayPal Braintree arrangement, subject to eligibility and terms. Who should choose it
Choose BigCommerce when variants, wholesale pricing, multiple storefronts, regional catalogs, native sales channels, APIs, or operational integrations justify its pricing structure.
Who should not
A very small, low-margin store may pay for capacity it does not use or reach a higher plan because of GMV even when traffic and catalog needs are unchanged.
Side-by-side buying guide
| Option | Best for | Hosting/SSL | Backups and staging | Main burden or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Most beginners and growing brands | Included hosting, unlimited bandwidth, free SSL | Platform-managed; verify export and recovery options | Subscription, apps, payment and possible third-party transaction fees; less server control |
| WooCommerce + managed host | Ownership, WordPress, custom code | Depends on host; HTTPS required | Depends on plan; test restoration | You manage extensions, updates, conflicts, and development |
| Hostinger | Budget-conscious small store | SSL and CDN listed as included | Daily backups listed; verify retention and restore | Promotional pricing and resource/support limits |

| Bluehost | First-time WooCommerce setup | Preinstalled WordPress/WooCommerce; SSL listed | Verify staging and backup scope | One-site/add-on limits, renewal costs, and separate gateway fees |
| BigCommerce | Complex catalogs, B2B, multichannel growth | Hosted platform | Platform-managed; confirm recovery and exports | GMV-based upgrades, overages, and open-provider fees |
Choose in five minutes
- If you want no server or plugin maintenance, choose Shopify.
- If WordPress integration, code control, and ownership are essential, choose WooCommerce on managed hosting.
- If the lowest sensible starting price is decisive and the store is small, investigate Hostinger first.
- If managed WooCommerce setup, migrations, and backup coverage matter more than the lowest price, investigate SiteGround.
- If you want a preconfigured beginner WooCommerce path with commerce tools, investigate Bluehost.
- If you need complex catalogs, B2B pricing, or multichannel growth, model BigCommerce’s GMV economics.
- If you need enterprise operations, request specialist architecture, support commitments, and custom pricing instead of selecting shared hosting.
Launch checklist before accepting orders
- Connect and verify your custom domain and HTTPS.
- Configure payment methods and place a successful test order.
- Test a failed payment, refund, tax calculation, shipping rate, coupon, and inventory deduction.
- Verify email delivery, mobile checkout, analytics, conversion tracking, and abandoned-cart recovery if used.
- Confirm backups include the database, then perform a staging restore.
- Review administrator accounts, permissions, and two-factor authentication.
- Document renewal dates, cancellation terms, export procedures, and who handles emergencies.
Warning signs that a plan is too small
- The admin area slows during promotions or traffic spikes.
- Checkout requests time out or PHP-worker limits are reached.
- Database CPU is saturated, or backup and malware scans affect customer traffic.
- Plugin updates cannot be tested safely in staging.
- Support repeatedly recommends an upgrade without identifying whether the cause is hosting, a plugin, theme code, images, external scripts, or payment/shipping APIs.
Changing hosts does not automatically fix application-level problems. Optimize images, themes, queries, extensions, and third-party scripts before assuming infrastructure is the bottleneck.
Final recommendations
Choose Shopify when simplicity and managed infrastructure are worth the subscription. Choose WooCommerce when WordPress ownership and customization are strategic. Choose Hostinger when budget dominates and the store is small; SiteGround when managed features and backup coverage matter more; and Bluehost when a beginner wants a preconfigured WooCommerce route. Choose BigCommerce when catalog complexity, B2B, or multichannel growth justifies modeling GMV thresholds and payment fees. For every option, compare renewal and operating costs—not just the promotional monthly number.
