Canva announced its acquisition of Australian generative-AI company Leonardo.Ai on July 29, 2024. The deal gives Canva Leonardo’s approximately 120-person research and engineering team, its visual-generation platform, the Phoenix model and a reported user base of more than 19 million people. Canva did not disclose a purchase price; a later investor-related release cited an estimated value of about $370 million, which is not an officially confirmed figure.
By August 2026, the transaction had become a working product strategy: Leonardo remains a separately operated platform, while some Canva image-generation tools use Leonardo models and Canva Business and Enterprise customers can receive Leonardo.Ai Essential access.
What Canva bought
Canva described Leonardo.Ai as a generative-AI platform and research company for images, graphics and video. Leonardo was founded in Australia in 2022 and Canva said its products had reached more than 19 million users roughly two years later. TechCrunch reported that all 120 Leonardo employees, including the executive team, would join Canva.
The transaction was presented as an acquisition rather than a simple licensing agreement. Canva owns Leonardo, but said Leonardo would continue developing its own website, products and research. Leonardo’s technology and models would also be integrated into Canva’s Magic Studio tools.

Financial terms were not disclosed by Canva. TechCrunch described the consideration as cash and stock, while a Stack Capital-related release later cited an estimated value of approximately $370 million. That estimate should not be treated as Canva’s confirmed purchase price.
Canva also said Canva user content would not be shared with Leonardo unless users expressly opted in. That statement is an attributed policy commitment, not a substitute for reviewing the current terms, retention rules and enterprise controls that apply to a particular product.

Why Canva wanted Leonardo.Ai
A faster route to visual-model research
Leonardo brought a specialized team working on foundational visual models, fine-tuning and creator controls. Buying that capability gave Canva a faster path to model research and product development than building every layer internally.
More capable generation inside Magic Studio
Canva already offered Magic Studio and Magic Media. Leonardo added a platform built around more control over image generation, model customization and interactive workflows. Canva highlighted Phoenix, Leonardo’s foundational image model, for prompt adherence, text rendering and production-oriented output, and said it would integrate Phoenix into Magic Studio’s image and video tools.
Distribution in both directions
Leonardo supplied a large creator community and a standalone product. Canva supplied capital, distribution, licensed content and access to business customers. The combination lets Canva put visual-AI features in front of a much larger design audience while giving Leonardo a route to broader business adoption.
Enterprise and API potential
Leonardo’s offering included APIs, model customization, collaboration features and private-cloud capabilities. Canva’s stated goal was to support Leonardo’s business and API growth, not merely to embed a consumer image generator in a template editor.

What Leonardo.Ai offered before the deal
Leonardo began with a focus on video-game assets and expanded into general image and video creation for fashion, advertising, architecture, product visualization, storyboards, moodboards, characters and concepts. Its differentiation was control as much as prompt-to-image generation.

Phoenix was introduced shortly before the acquisition. Canva associated it with better prompt adherence, more accurate text inside images and production-quality generation. Neither the announcement nor current Canva pages establish that Phoenix powers every Canva AI result.
How the two products fit together in 2026
The acquisition created three related but different access routes:

Canva Business and Enterprise
Canva says Business and Enterprise include Leonardo.Ai Essential. A new user connects Leonardo using a Canva account. An existing Leonardo subscriber may need to cancel the standalone subscription first; Canva’s help text says the account reverts to Free when cancellation takes effect. An administrator can restrict access, and the Essential entitlement may not be available during a Canva Business free trial until the trial ends and payment is processed.

If Canva Business is cancelled, Canva says the connected Leonardo account reverts to Free, so Essential features and associated unused tokens should not be treated as permanent assets.
Canva’s integration page currently advertises Leonardo access in English, which may matter to multilingual teams. Review the live eligibility and administration rules at Canva’s FAQ.
Canva Teams and AI Pass
Canva Teams is closed to new sign-ups and upgrades. Existing Teams subscribers remain on their current plan unless they switch or cancel, and Canva says later Business-only features are not automatically added to Teams.
Canva’s AI Pass is a separate monthly add-on for Canva Pro and Canva Business. Canva describes it as providing up to 40 times more AI usage than Canva Pro and 20 times more than Canva Business. It is not required to use Canva AI and is not the same entitlement as Leonardo.Ai Essential.

What the acquisition changes for users
- Generated visuals can be created in a Canva workflow and then placed directly into designs, presentations, websites, social posts, print layouts and videos.
- Businesses can combine Canva’s brand controls, collaboration and publishing with Leonardo-powered generation where the feature and plan permit it.
- Advanced creators can still use Leonardo separately rather than giving up its specialist interface.
- Plan boundaries remain important: a Canva subscription does not automatically include every Leonardo model, token allowance, API capability or privacy option.
Owning a model team can improve research and distribution, but it does not guarantee superior results for every prompt. Generative systems can still produce faulty text, hands, layouts, brand details and repeat characters.
Business, privacy and legal considerations
Commercial use is not the same as ownership
Leonardo’s help documentation says the service can be used for personal and commercial purposes, subject to its terms. Before using an output in advertising, packaging, a product or client work, distinguish among:

- permission to use the output commercially;
- whether the output is private or public;
- ownership or licensing of the output;
- whether Leonardo or successors retain rights over public images and prompts;
- the selected model’s own terms; and
- whether the plan supplies indemnification or other contractual protection.
Read the current Leonardo commercial-use documentation rather than assuming the acquisition guarantees originality, exclusivity or legal protection.
Enterprise diligence
Organizations should check administrator controls, private-generation settings, API and private-cloud requirements, data retention, model provenance, brand consistency and geography or language availability. Canva’s opt-in statement about sharing Canva content with Leonardo is useful context, but it does not answer every privacy or retention question for every plan.

Canva-native marketer
Canva Business is the most integrated choice when generated assets must move straight into branded campaigns and shared production workflows.
Independent AI-image creator
Leonardo’s standalone plans are more relevant when private generations, custom models, realtime controls or specialist experimentation matter more than Canva’s publishing tools.
Small business
Compare the cost of Canva Business with a separate Leonardo subscription. The bundle is valuable only if the business will use both the design suite and the included Leonardo entitlement.
Enterprise marketing team
Prioritize administrator controls, private generation, API or private-cloud access, data terms and brand consistency before comparing token allowances.

API developer or technical team
Evaluate Leonardo’s API and customization terms directly; a Canva interface subscription may not satisfy a high-volume or automated workflow.
Users needing local deployment
A Stable Diffusion-based deployment may offer more control, but it shifts model selection, infrastructure, maintenance and compliance work to the user.
What the deal means strategically
This was a vertical integration of model research, application software and distribution. Canva gained a visual-AI team and a specialist platform; Leonardo gained Canva’s capital, reach and business channel. The continuing standalone Leonardo product also gives advanced users a place to use controls that may not fit Canva’s simpler design interface.
The important distinction is timing. In July 2024, Canva described integration as a planned benefit. Current Canva pages confirm that some Canva image-generation tools now use Leonardo models and that Business and Enterprise customers can activate Essential access. That is a broader and more concrete outcome than the original announcement, but it is not evidence that every Canva AI feature is Leonardo-powered.

Bottom line for subscribers and buyers
Canva’s Leonardo.Ai acquisition strengthens Canva’s generative-AI strategy by combining a model-research team, a standalone creator community, enterprise/API capabilities and Canva’s enormous design distribution. For a marketer or small team already working in Canva, the integration can reduce the friction between generating an image and publishing a finished asset. For a specialist creator, Leonardo remains a separate product with its own plans and controls.
The practical decision is therefore not whether Canva replaced Leonardo. It did not. Compare the plan, privacy, commercial-use, administration and workflow terms you actually need, then decide whether Canva Business, a standalone Leonardo plan, an AI Pass add-on or another provider offers the better value.
