Marissa Mayer’s consumer startup Sunshine is no longer operating as a standalone company. Founded as Lumi Labs in 2018, it was wound down in 2025 after Sunshine said it had been acquired by Dazzle AI, a newly incorporated company founded by Mayer. Sunshine’s apps were slated for sunset, while its technology and team were integrated into Dazzle. Dazzle then announced an $8 million seed round at a $35 million post-money valuation.

The structure was a founder-led transfer to a new company—not a conventional third-party acquisition or simply a name change. The exact purchase consideration, liabilities assumed and treatment of user data have not been publicly disclosed in the sources available.

What happened to Sunshine?

Mayer founded Lumi Labs after leaving Yahoo. The company later adopted the Sunshine name and built consumer software, including a contact-management product and a photo-sharing app. In 2025, Sunshine was wound down and its assets were sold or transferred to Dazzle AI.

Sunshine’s website says it was acquired by Dazzle and that its apps would be sunsetted (Sunshine). WIRED reported that Mayer told shareholders Dazzle had been incorporated and was ready to acquire Sunshine’s holdings; the company said 99.99% of shareholders had approved or signed off (WIRED). The original reporting described the transaction as pending approval on September 29, 2025, while Sunshine’s later announcement confirms the completed transition.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

In practical terms, Sunshine ceased to be the operating business. Dazzle became the vehicle for Mayer’s next product, with continuity in the founder, much of the team and selected assets.

The timeline from Lumi Labs to Dazzle

Date Development
2018 Mayer founded Lumi Labs, the company that later became Sunshine.
2020 Sunshine launched Sunshine Contacts, a subscription contact-management app.
2024 The company expanded into event management and launched Shine, a photo-sharing product with AI-related features.
September 29, 2025 Reporting described the planned wind-down, Dazzle’s incorporation and the proposed asset transfer.
Late 2025 Sunshine said it had been acquired by Dazzle and that its apps would be sunsetted.
December 23, 2025 Dazzle announced an $8 million seed round at a $35 million post-money valuation.

What Sunshine built

Sunshine Contacts

Sunshine Contacts was the company’s first major product. It used AI to identify and merge duplicate contacts and reportedly enriched contact records with information from Whitepages, including home addresses. That approach generated privacy complaints, according to WIRED (WIRED).

Shine and event tools

In 2024, Sunshine moved beyond contacts into event management and launched Shine, a photo-sharing application with AI-related features. TechCrunch reported that the apps had each been downloaded just over 1,000 times on Google Play at the time of its coverage (TechCrunch). Those figures are a reported Google Play snapshot, not a count of all iOS, web, paid or active users.

Why Sunshine struggled

No public postmortem establishes one definitive cause. The available reporting points to several overlapping problems:

  • 128GB Unified Memory: Features 128GB LPDDR5x unified memory at 8000 MT/s with 256 GB/s memory bandwidth, providing a shared memory pool across the CPU, GPU, and NPU to support larger AI models.
  • AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Processor: Features 16 cores, 32 threads, and Zen 5 architecture, paired with AMD Radeon 8060S integrated graphics featuring 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units and an AMD XDNA 2 NPU with up to 50 TOPS.
  • Linux AI Developer Platform: Purpose-built for Linux-based AI development with full AMD ROCm software support and preloaded tools, models, and workflows optimized for local AI development.
  • Compact, Connected Design: Includes a 2TB M.2 SSD, 10GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C connectivity, and HDMI 2.1b.
  • Limited adoption: The reported download numbers suggest the products did not achieve broad consumer reach.
  • Unclear product-market fit: Contact management, event coordination and photo sharing are crowded categories, and Sunshine did not establish a breakout use case.
  • Privacy friction: Enriching personal contact records with public-record information made the product’s value proposition harder to separate from concerns about consent and data handling.
  • A difficult expansion: The later move into photo sharing did not produce evidence of a breakout product before the company was wound down.

It would be inaccurate to reduce the outcome to “bad design” or privacy alone. The stronger conclusion is that Sunshine struggled to find a sufficiently differentiated, widely adopted consumer product.

How much money did Sunshine raise?

Sunshine reportedly raised about $20 million in venture capital, in addition to money Mayer invested herself. Reported backers included Norwest Venture Partners, Felicis and SV Angel, among other early-stage investors (WIRED; Axios). “About $20 million” is an approximate reported total, not an audited capitalization figure.

How the transfer to Dazzle worked

A new company, not a simple rebrand

Dazzle was incorporated as a new Mayer-founded company and acquired Sunshine’s assets. That makes the transaction an asset sale or transfer into a new entity rather than a public rebranding of Sunshine’s existing legal company. The sources do not disclose the purchase price, the precise assets conveyed or which Sunshine liabilities Dazzle assumed.

Shareholder approval and reported investor rollover

WIRED reported that approximately 99.99% of Sunshine shareholders had approved or signed off on the transaction. A later report by The Meridiem said Sunshine investors received 10% ownership in Dazzle (The Meridiem). That percentage does not appear in Dazzle’s official funding announcement or the original WIRED account, so it should be treated as a reported, unverified deal term. The sources do not establish the share class, dilution, vesting, voting rights or whether every investor received identical terms.

Employees

Sunshine had roughly 15 employees, according to WIRED. Those employees were expected to take new roles at Dazzle, and Sunshine said its technology and team would be integrated into the new company (Sunshine). “Expected to move” does not prove that every employee ultimately stayed or that their employment terms were unchanged.

What Dazzle is building

Dazzle describes itself as a consumer-AI company developing tools intended to bridge the gap between what people want to do and what AI can do (Dazzle About). Its public materials do not disclose a finished product. WIRED reported that sources characterized Mayer’s direction as a new type of AI personal assistant, but that description is not a complete product specification.

The safest description is that Dazzle is developing a consumer AI application whose first product was still private or in preparation. Dazzle’s own announcement said the new financing would support team expansion and preparation for its first launch (Dazzle Press).

What the transition means for users

Sunshine users should treat the old apps as closing products, not as services guaranteed to continue inside Dazzle. Sunshine said the apps would be sunsetted, but the available announcements do not specify an export deadline, refund policy, retention period or account-deletion procedure.

  • Do not assume contacts, photos, event information or account history will remain accessible.
  • Do not assume every Sunshine account or data field was migrated to Dazzle.
  • Look for a direct notice from Sunshine or Dazzle before relying on an export or deletion date.

The data question is especially important because Sunshine Contacts reportedly used enriched personal information. Dazzle’s future consumer-AI product may also depend on access to personal data, making consent, portability, model-training use and deletion policies central questions when the product is disclosed.

What remains unknown

  • The exact list of intellectual property, software, contracts and data transferred to Dazzle.
  • The consideration paid for Sunshine’s assets and the treatment of Sunshine’s remaining liabilities.
  • Whether the reported 10% investor interest applies uniformly and how it will be diluted by later financing.
  • How many Sunshine employees actually joined Dazzle and on what terms.
  • Whether users can export or delete their Sunshine data, and when access ends.
  • Dazzle’s launch date, product capabilities, pricing and privacy practices.

Is Dazzle simply Sunshine under a new name?

No, not technically. The evidence points to a new legal entity acquiring assets from the old company. But the practical continuity is substantial: Mayer remains the founder, much of the team was expected to move, technology and other assets were integrated, and existing investors were reportedly given an interest in Dazzle.

That combination is best understood as a founder reset. Mayer is carrying forward people, technology, investor relationships and lessons from Sunshine while changing the legal entity and product direction. Whether the reset works depends on Dazzle demonstrating product-market fit—something its undisclosed product has not yet had an opportunity to prove.
