Re:

EGYM raises about $200 million at a reported $1.2 billion-plus valuation as it scales connected gyms, AI workouts and corporate wellness

EGYM’s 2024 Series G made it a reported unicorn, but its real proposition is a B2B2C fitness infrastructure platform combining smart equipment, software, AI-assisted workouts and employer access. The company became a Playlist subsidiary in March 2026.

Munich-based EGYM raised approximately $200 million in a September 2024 Series G growth round led by L Catterton and Meritech Capital. EGYM said the company was valued at more than $1 billion; TechCrunch reported, citing CEO Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, a post-money valuation above $1.2 billion. The company sells connected gym equipment and software to facilities, operates the EGYM Wellpass employer network and offers AI-assisted workout planning—not a conventional direct-to-consumer fitness subscription.

What the 2024 financing bought

The Series G was described as growth capital or new investment. Public announcements do not provide a detailed breakdown of equity, debt or secondary liquidity. L Catterton and Meritech Capital were new investors at this stage, and their representatives Marc Magliacano and Paul Madera joined EGYM’s board.

  • Amount: approximately $200 million.
  • Valuation: EGYM’s announcement said above $1 billion. TechCrunch reported more than $1.2 billion post-money based on the CEO’s confirmation. High-Tech Gründerfonds described the valuation as more than $1 billion pre-money, so the precise figure depends on the source and whether it is pre- or post-money.
  • Planned uses: expanding EGYM Wellpass, developing digital and AI-supported training products, entering further in the United States and United Kingdom, and extending the connected-equipment and software ecosystem.

The round made EGYM a private “unicorn” under the commonly used billion-dollar valuation definition, but the valuation is a reported transaction figure rather than an independently audited appraisal.

The gym problem behind the company

Founder and CEO Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer has said he struggled to know which exercises to perform, how much weight to use and how to progress safely. That experience pointed to a broader onboarding problem: beginners often lack feedback, while experienced members may have no consistent record when they move between machines or clubs. Personal training can solve part of the problem, but it is expensive and cannot be provided one-to-one to every member.

EGYM’s answer was to connect machines, assessments, workout software, apps and wearable data. For an operator, the pitch also includes more efficient trainer workflows and a more differentiated member experience. The origin story explains the product direction; it is not clinical evidence that EGYM improves fitness or prevents injuries.

How EGYM makes money

EGYM is primarily a business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C) platform. A gym, health facility or employer is the customer or distribution partner; members encounter EGYM through that organization.

  1. EGYM sells or licenses connected equipment and software to fitness and health facilities.
  2. Facilities use assessments, machines, apps and trainer tools to serve their members.
  3. EGYM Wellpass lets participating employers offer employees access to gyms and other sports facilities.
  4. Members generate workout, assessment and participation data that can support personalization and engagement.
  5. EGYM earns from equipment, software and corporate-wellness subscriptions.

TechCrunch reported that EGYM said roughly 75% of revenue was subscription-based and 25% equipment-related at the time of the 2024 financing. That is a company-reported mix, not an audited segment disclosure. EGYM also said it had no plan then to sell a standard direct-to-consumer subscription, so an individual typically reaches the service through a participating gym, employer benefit or facility app.

EGYM company overview · EGYM funding announcement

EGYM Genius

EGYM Genius is an AI-supported workout-planning system. It uses a member’s goals and preferences, assessment results, workout history, progress and the equipment available at a particular club. It is intended to work with both connected and conventional machines, allowing a facility to incorporate its existing inventory.

EGYM’s CEO told TechCrunch in 2024 that Genius uses machine-learning models tailored to workout data rather than simply placing a generic large language model in front of users. EGYM says its current materials contain more than 11 billion workout data points and 700 million assessment data points; its 2024 funding announcement cited 7 billion training data points. These are company claims made at different times and with different labels, not independently validated measurements.

Genius can automate parts of programming and help trainers monitor progress, but public product material does not establish that it improves adherence, produces superior health outcomes or functions as an autonomous personal trainer. Questions about contraindications, inaccurate assessments, human oversight and data governance remain important for buyers.

EGYM Wellpass

Wellpass is the corporate fitness and wellness network. Employers sponsor access for employees, who can use participating gyms and sports facilities. In September 2024, EGYM reported 17,000 sports partners, 14,000 corporate customers and more than 3 million eligible employees. It also reported about 18,000 fitness and health facilities using its products and services and approximately 6 million people training with EGYM monthly. Those figures were company-reported and should not be treated as current totals or as six million paying subscribers.

Why investors saw a large opportunity

The investment case is a set of plausible advantages, not proof that each has been achieved.

  • Recurring revenue: subscriptions can be more predictable than one-time equipment sales.
  • Physical and digital integration: machines create a club footprint while software and data support ongoing relationships.
  • B2B2C distribution: gyms and employers can reach members without EGYM acquiring every consumer itself.
  • Potential network effects: a larger Wellpass network may be more useful to employers, while more workout data may improve personalization.
  • Operator economics: better onboarding and engagement could support retention and make trainers more productive, although EGYM has not publicly established a universal causal result.
  • Workplace-wellness demand: employers continue to evaluate benefits intended to increase participation in fitness and wellness.
  • International expansion: the United States and United Kingdom offered additional markets beyond EGYM’s European base.
  • Investor fit: L Catterton brought consumer and fitness-investment experience, while Meritech brought enterprise-technology and growth-investing experience.

Claims about lower healthcare costs, fewer sick days or disease prevention should be treated as goals or marketing propositions unless supported by independent outcome research.

Risks investors and customers should examine

Hardware and capital cycles

Connected machines provide a physical moat and generate usage data, but equipment sales are lumpy. Installation, maintenance and upgrades cost money, and clubs may postpone capital purchases during a downturn. Operators may also resist becoming dependent on one vendor.

Subscription retention

Recurring revenue is valuable only if employers, facilities and members continue using the service. Employer cancellations, gym-network churn, low engagement and cuts to wellness budgets can undermine predictability. Implementation and customer-acquisition costs also matter.

AI reliability and evidence

Buyers should ask whether Genius improves adherence relative to ordinary programming, how contraindications are handled, what human review remains, and whether it works well without EGYM equipment. The public materials reviewed do not provide independent clinical validation.

Privacy and governance

Prospective customers should clarify which party controls health, biometric, workout and wearable data; whether employers see individual activity or only aggregate reporting; retention and deletion rules; model-training uses; opt-out choices; and GDPR or applicable U.S. state privacy obligations. Fitness data do not automatically make a service subject to HIPAA—the law depends on the parties and transactions involved.

Market and integration pressure

The U.S. market is larger but fragmented. Clubs may prefer software-only products or incumbent equipment vendors, and integrations across brands and machine generations can be difficult. Corporate-wellness benefits also often face low utilization. After the merger, combining hardware, club-management, booking and wellness businesses adds execution risk.

Where EGYM is now

EGYM is no longer an independent company in the form described by the 2024 funding story. Playlist and EGYM announced their merger on January 15, 2026, and completed it on March 31, 2026. EGYM became a Playlist subsidiary alongside Mindbody, Booker and ClassPass.

The combined company was valued at $7.5 billion and received $785 million in new equity investment. Playlist said the enlarged network had more than 20,000 Wellpass employer partners and more than 33,000 EGYM-powered fitness locations. The $7.5 billion figure is for the combined Playlist enterprise; it does not mean EGYM alone rose from a $1.2 billion valuation to $7.5 billion.

Merger announcement · Merger completion

What the story means for buyers

EGYM is commercially most relevant to gym operators, franchise groups, trainers, employers and fitness-technology buyers. It is not positioned like a transparent, home-use consumer subscription. Equipment, Genius and Wellpass are generally sales-led offerings whose pricing and availability depend on facility, employer and geography.

Alternatives address different parts of the stack: Wellhub and Urban Sports Club focus on access networks; Technogym and Life Fitness are closer equipment comparisons; ABC Fitness focuses on club operations; and Mindbody and ClassPass are now strategic complements within Playlist rather than clean post-merger alternatives.
