Yes. On August 27, 2025, Verily said it would discontinue manufacturing medical devices and stop supporting them, while laying off an undisclosed number of employees. The Alphabet-founded health company said it was redirecting resources toward precision health, healthcare data and artificial intelligence. The move closed a major hardware chapter, but it did not end every Verily activity involving device data, clinical research or digital-health software.
Verily’s corporate status also changed afterward. On March 19, 2026, it announced $300 million in financing, adopted the name Verily Health Inc. and said Alphabet had become a significant minority investor rather than the controlling owner.
What Verily actually closed
The August 2025 announcement was narrower than the shorthand “Verily abandoned medical devices” suggests. A company spokesperson, in reporting based on an internal memo seen by Business Insider, said Verily would discontinue manufacturing medical devices and no longer support them. The report did not establish that every Verily project using sensors, third-party hardware, device-generated data or digital measurements ended at the same time.
Verily’s public materials continue to describe healthcare software, research infrastructure and data products that can incorporate device information. Its company overview discusses those capabilities at Verily’s About Us page, while its 2025 strategy materials describe AI and precision-health work at Verily’s AI and precision-health overview.

There is also no evidence in the available reporting of a safety recall, FDA enforcement action or regulatory withdrawal. Ending product support is not automatically the same as recalling a product.
How many employees lost their jobs?
The publicly reported number is unknown. The August 2025 account confirmed layoffs but said Verily did not disclose the headcount. Estimates circulating without a company filing or independently verified source should not be treated as fact.
Do not substitute Verily’s earlier figure of approximately 15% of roles. That reduction was announced in January 2023 as part of a separate restructuring.
Which projects illustrate Verily’s device ambitions?
The August 2025 coverage referenced several areas of Verily’s former hardware and medical-device work:

- connected diabetes therapies;
- robotic-surgery research;
- the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor collaboration; and
- the Stargazer VNRC drug-delivery platform.
These examples show the breadth of the device strategy, but the reporting does not say that every named project was manufactured or supported by the division that closed. Nor does it provide a complete list of products discontinued in August 2025.
Verily’s January 2023 strategy announcement separately identified programs that were discontinued or reduced, including Verily Value Suite, remote patient monitoring for heart failure and microneedles for drug delivery. That announcement is available at Verily’s “One Verily Forward” post. Those were 2023 decisions, not a definitive inventory of the August 2025 shutdown.
The closure followed a 2023 restructuring
In January 2023, Verily said it would discontinue several initiatives, eliminate approximately 15% of company roles and reorganize its devices business. The same plan said Devices leader Jordi Parramon was expected to leave later that year.
The chronology matters: the January 2023 restructuring and the August 2025 device-manufacturing shutdown were related strategic retrenchments, but they were separate events. Treating the 2023 percentage as the 2025 layoff total would be inaccurate.

Why did Verily shift away from manufacturing?
Verily’s stated rationale was strategic focus. The company said precision health, data and AI were becoming its central priorities. Its strategy materials describe concentrating on fewer initiatives, a centralized product organization, evidence generation, clinical research, healthcare data and AI-enabled products.
The move also fits the wider technology environment: Alphabet announced roughly 12,000 job cuts in 2023 and has emphasized AI and data infrastructure. However, Verily’s August 2025 action occurred nearly two years later and was presented as a Verily-specific decision, not simply a continuation of that Alphabet-wide reduction.
Some coverage characterized the device operation as potentially not being a profit maker. That is not a disclosed financial finding, so it should not be stated as proof that the division was unprofitable.
What Verily focused on afterward
Verily’s post-shutdown portfolio emphasizes software, data and research rather than owning a manufacturing operation. Its public materials highlight platforms and infrastructure including:

- Verily Pre, an AI-native precision-health platform described at Verily’s Pre platform announcement;
- Verily Me and other data-oriented products;
- research infrastructure and data harmonization; and

Those products may work with device-generated information or clinical measurements. That is different from Verily manufacturing and supporting its own medical devices.
Verily Health and the change in Alphabet’s ownership
On March 19, 2026, Verily announced a $300 million investment round and said it was moving forward as Verily Health Inc. The company said Alphabet remained a significant minority investor but no longer controlled it. Details appear in the company’s financing announcement at Verily’s $300 million investment announcement and in CEO Stephen Gillett’s “Our Next Chapter” post.
Accordingly, calling it “Alphabet’s Verily” accurately describes the company’s origin and ownership context when the device closure was reported in August 2025. It is incomplete as a description of the company’s ownership after the March 2026 transaction.

The available reports do not establish a product-by-product support timetable or a universal customer-transition policy. They also do not say whether products already in customers’ hands were switched off immediately, phased out, transferred to another company or accompanied by replacements or refunds.
Best Value
- The number of affected employees and their locations were not disclosed.
- A complete list of discontinued devices and programs was not published in the coverage.
- It is unclear which intellectual property, contracts or teams, if any, moved elsewhere.
- The continuing scope of Verily’s device-design, sensor and clinical-measurement capabilities is not fully specified.
- No recall, safety withdrawal or regulator-directed action was identified.
Users should therefore look for a product-specific notice from Verily, a clinical partner or a regulator rather than infer a recall from the phrase “no longer supporting” devices.

What remains unanswered
Important questions require further company or regulatory disclosures: the precise layoff count, affected locations, support and replacement terms for each product, the fate of specific projects such as Stargazer, any transfer of contracts or intellectual property, and whether Alphabet reported a material financial impact. None should be filled in with speculation.
The Bottom Line
Verily did shut down its medical-device manufacturing and support operation in August 2025 and laid off an undisclosed number of staff. The company did not disappear: it has repositioned around precision-health data, research and AI, and since March 2026 operates as Verily Health with Alphabet as a significant minority investor rather than its controlling owner.
