Amazon did not shut down its entire Appstore. On August 20, 2025, it ended the Amazon Appstore for non-Amazon Android phones and tablets and discontinued Amazon Coins worldwide. The Appstore continues on Fire tablets, Fire TV devices and Fire TV built-in products.
The change is now historical. Apps installed from Amazon on ordinary Android devices may still launch, but Amazon no longer guarantees their operation, updates, licensing or in-app purchases.
What Amazon actually discontinued
Amazon’s announcement used “Android” in a narrower operational sense than many headlines did. The discontinued product was the Appstore version for non-Amazon Android mobile devices—not the Appstore across every Amazon device.
| Product or device | Status after August 20, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Amazon Appstore on non-Amazon Android phones and tablets | Discontinued |
| Amazon Coins | Discontinued in all marketplaces |
| Amazon Appstore on Fire tablets | Continued |
| Amazon Appstore on Fire TV and Fire TV built-in products | Continued |
| Amazon Shopping, Kindle, Prime Video and other unrelated Amazon apps | Not automatically covered by this announcement |
Fire OS is Android-derived, but Amazon’s developer clarification distinguishes Amazon hardware from conventional Android devices. See Amazon’s device and policy clarification.

What happened to apps already installed on Android phones?
Amazon did not say that every installed app would be erased or stop launching at the same moment. Its position was that apps downloaded from the Appstore were no longer guaranteed to operate on non-Amazon Android devices after the cutoff.
- An app may depend on the Amazon Appstore for ownership checks, licensing, DRM or Amazon in-app billing.
- The store may no longer deliver updates, even if the installed version still opens.
- Paid content or subscriptions may fail to restore when an Amazon entitlement can no longer be validated.
- An app using only standard Android functions might continue working, but that is app-specific rather than an Amazon guarantee.
Sideloading an old Amazon APK does not restore the discontinued catalog, backend services, billing or support.

- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
What users should do
- Find affected apps. Compare the apps on your phone with your Amazon Appstore library and identify those not obtained through Google Play.
- Check an official alternative. Search Google Play or the publisher’s own website for a supported release.
- Ask the developer about entitlements. Provide your Amazon account details, receipts and purchase history and ask whether access can be restored on another store.
- Do not assume a transfer. An Amazon Appstore purchase does not automatically become a Google Play purchase; restoration is developer- and app-specific.
- Review subscriptions. Check whether billing is still active and whether the service can be used through the publisher’s website or another supported platform.
- Avoid unofficial APK mirrors. Modified or malicious packages can expose accounts and payment data.
Choosing a replacement store
| Channel | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | Broad Android-phone and tablet compatibility, automatic updates and standard account integration | Amazon purchases may not transfer |
| Samsung Galaxy Store | Developers with a substantial Samsung audience | Not a universal Android replacement |
| F-Droid | Eligible open-source apps | Closed-source apps and many Google-dependent apps do not qualify |
| Amazon Appstore | Fire tablet and Fire TV distribution | Not a general storefront for non-Amazon phones |
What happened to Amazon Coins?
Amazon Coins were a virtual payment system for eligible apps, games and in-app purchases. Customers could no longer buy new Coins from February 20, 2025, but could use previously purchased Coins until August 20, 2025. The program then ended in all marketplaces.
Amazon and contemporary customer notices reported refunds for remaining balances, but the applicable method and timing can depend on the marketplace and the notice sent to the account holder. Do not assume a refund is available without checking your Amazon account communications or contacting support.
Amazon’s current developer documentation marks Coins as discontinued and says the former coinsRewardAmount product-data field is no longer supported: IAP changes and IAP implementation details.

What developers need to know
Apps for ordinary Android phones and tablets
- New submissions targeting non-Amazon Android devices stopped on February 20, 2025.
- Existing live apps could receive updates through August 20, 2025.
- Developers generally need Google Play or another distribution channel for conventional Android phones.
- Migration involves billing, licensing, DRM, entitlement checks, analytics and update delivery—not merely uploading the same APK elsewhere.
Apps for Fire devices
Amazon Appstore development continues for Fire tablets and Fire TV. Amazon’s SDK documentation lists version 3.0.9, released May 20, 2026, with Appstore, in-app-purchasing, digital-rights-management and Simple Sign-in functionality. See the SDK release notes and developer documentation.

A separate change is scheduled for September 15, 2026: support for the Appstore Billing Compatibility SDK will end. That SDK helped developers adapt existing Google Play Billing integrations to Amazon Appstore; its deadline is separate from the completed 2025 non-Amazon Android shutdown. Details are in Amazon’s developer notice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Amazon made the change
Amazon described the move as an effort to “streamline” its services and programs in its official announcement. It did not publish a detailed financial explanation or user-count breakdown.
A reasonable business interpretation is that Amazon preserved the Appstore where it controls the hardware experience—Fire tablets and Fire TV—while reducing the cost and complexity of maintaining a separate general-purpose mobile storefront, billing system and licensing layer. That is analysis, not a stated claim that the service was unprofitable or that Google forced the decision.
