Its 50 companies span AI and high-performance computing, enterprise file and block storage, S3-compatible object storage, hyperconverged infrastructure, edge deployments, open-source platforms, cloud services and mainframe data access.
The useful way to read the list is as a market map. Match a vendor’s architecture, operating model and support requirements to your workload, recovery objectives, skills and total cost—not to the word “coolest.”
What software-defined storage means
Software-defined storage (SDS) implements storage functions primarily in software rather than making them inseparable from a proprietary array. The software can run on commodity x86 servers, virtual machines, bare-metal appliances, public-cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes or hyperconverged nodes, and in disaggregated compute-and-storage designs.
Typical SDS functions include block, file and object protocols; pooling and tiering; replication and erasure coding; snapshots and clones; encryption and key management; immutable retention; cloud bursting; multi-site management; policy-based provisioning; APIs; and Kubernetes integrations.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
SDS is a broad label. Some companies on this list are software specialists, while others sell integrated appliances, validated hardware, cloud services, HCI systems, archive platforms or specialized data-access software.
What SDS does not abstract away
Software portability does not make infrastructure irrelevant. Media, controllers, CPUs, GPUs, network fabrics, drive endurance, power, support boundaries and failure-domain design still determine latency, throughput and resilience. A turnkey system can therefore be the better operational choice even when its software could theoretically run on other hardware.
How to interpret CRN’s 2025 list
CRN says storage value is moving upward into software as cloud-only, virtualized, commodity-hardware and cloud-native implementations become more common. That is a market thesis, not proof that every software-led design is cheaper or faster. The broader 2025 Storage 100 contains 50 SDS vendors, 40 data-recovery, observability and resiliency vendors, and 10 component vendors.

The SDS feature is a historical April 2025 snapshot. CRN did not publish scoring weights, comparable prices, laboratory benchmarks, customer-satisfaction ratings, migration tests or an availability study. Product names, ownership, executives, licensing and availability may have changed since publication. For example, CRN described Lenovo’s acquisition of Infinidat as pending at the time; that should not be treated as current ownership without verification.

How to shortlist vendors by scenario
Replacing or reducing dependence on VMware
Start with Nutanix, Scale Computing, VergeIO, SoftIron and StorMagic, then compare them with Broadcom/VMware and a conventional hypervisor plus independent SDS. Inventory guest operating systems, backup integrations, vMotion-like requirements, licensing, hardware support and application certification before selecting a platform.

Decision checklist before signing a contract
- Workload: Is the primary need VM storage, databases, AI training, inference, HPC, media, backup, archive, analytics, Kubernetes volumes, edge operations or mainframe integration?
- Protocols: Which of NVMe/TCP, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS, SMB, S3 and Kubernetes interfaces are native, production-supported and equally mature?
- Data services: Confirm snapshots, clones, replication, erasure coding, deduplication, compression, tiering, immutable retention, ransomware detection, key management, QoS, namespaces and backup integration.
- Portability: Can the software run on selected hardware or public clouds? What is certified? Can data and volumes leave the platform without proprietary metadata or an expensive conversion?
- Resilience: Test disk, node, controller, network, site, cloud-region, key-management and management-plane failures. Record recovery-point and recovery-time results.
- Operations: Price firmware qualification, monitoring, upgrades, replacement parts, training, professional services, partner dependence and specialist staffing.
- Cloud economics: Include compute, storage, inter-zone and inter-region transfer, egress, API requests, minimum commitments and retention charges.
- Proof of concept: Use representative data and clients, realistic read/write mixes, metadata loads, failure injection and a migration rehearsal.
- Exit strategy: Document export formats, API dependencies, contract termination, support after expiry and the cost of moving data to another platform.
Cost and commercial reality
No reliable, comparable public pricing was established for this list. Most products are quote-based and sold through direct sales, partners, MSPs or integrators. Compare subscription or perpetual licenses, hardware, cloud infrastructure, support, services, training, replication bandwidth, expansion nodes, SSD replacement, migration and internal engineering—not just usable terabytes.
SDS can reduce hardware lock-in without reducing total cost. High-end NVMe, networking, validated configurations, replication overhead and premium support still cost money. Commodity hardware adds responsibility for firmware, BIOS, NIC, HBA or RAID settings, drive qualification and failure replacement. Cloud deployment can simplify procurement while adding egress, inter-zone transfer, variable compute, sovereignty and control-plane risks.
Alternatives that may be better than an SDS vendor
Not every storage problem calls for one of these 50 companies. A native public-cloud service can be simplest when applications already live in one region. Ceph or OpenZFS can suit organizations with deep Linux and distributed-systems expertise. A traditional integrated array may reduce operational burden. A managed storage provider can trade control for simpler staffing. A backup platform with immutable repositories may be the correct answer when cyber recovery—not primary storage—is the real requirement.
The central choice is architecture and operating model. CRN’s recognition is a useful starting map, but workload evidence, failure testing, support terms and total cost should determine the shortlist.
