5 Best Decentralized Crypto Wallets for You: Plus Wallet, Zengo, Ledger Stax, Bybit Wallet and SafePal

These five wallets are not equivalent: compare mobile, MPC, hardware and exchange-linked models before choosing where to store crypto.

There is no single best wallet for everyone—and these five products are not equivalent. Plus Wallet is a mobile software wallet, Zengo uses mobile two-party MPC, Ledger Stax is a hardware signer, Bybit Wallet must be checked against its current exchange-linked Web3 model, and SafePal combines a mobile app with optional air-gapped hardware. Choose according to who controls signing, how recovery works, what you hold, how often you use Web3, and what you are willing to pay and manage.

For long-term holdings, Ledger Stax is the strongest premium hardware choice if you can protect a seed phrase. Zengo is the most approachable option for people who fear seed-phrase loss. SafePal S1 offers the lowest-cost route to dedicated, QR-based hardware signing. Plus Wallet is aimed at mobile swaps and rewards, but its technical and audit claims need careful verification. Bybit Wallet is convenient for Bybit users only after you confirm its current custody, recovery, fees and regional availability.

What “decentralized wallet” really means

“Decentralized” is used too loosely in wallet marketing. The important distinctions are:

  • Custodial: An exchange or other intermediary controls the account infrastructure and normally the signing authority. Funds in a Bybit exchange account are not the same as funds in a self-custody wallet.
  • Non-custodial or self-custody: You control the credentials or signing authority and are responsible for access, approvals and recovery.
  • MPC: Multi-party computation divides signing authority between parties or devices. No single conventional private key has to exist in one place, but a provider may still participate in signing or recovery.
  • Hardware signer: A separate device protects signing credentials and approves transactions while the phone or computer remains connected to the internet.
  • Web3 access: A wallet may connect to DeFi, NFT marketplaces, bridges and other decentralized applications without the wallet company itself being decentralized.

A wallet can therefore be non-custodial yet depend on company servers, cloud recovery, remote MPC shares, app stores, swap providers, firmware or fiat on-ramps. Self-custody also does not mean anonymity, free transactions or protection from a malicious smart-contract approval.

Ledger Nano X - Classic Crypto Wallet with Bluetooth
  • Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. • Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
  • Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

How to compare these wallets

  1. Custody: Identify who can authorize a transaction, whether there is a seed phrase and whether company infrastructure participates.
  2. Recovery and portability: Check what happens after a lost phone, lost email, closed company, forgotten PIN or migration to another wallet.
  3. Transaction security: Look for clear signing screens, address checks, contract warnings and approval controls. No wallet can make a user-approved scam reversible.
  4. Asset support: Confirm the exact asset, network, app, hardware device, dApp and staking workflow. Token counts alone are not enough.
  5. Costs: Include hardware, network gas, spreads, swap or provider fees, bridge charges, on-ramp fees, withdrawals and any subscription. Compare the final amount received, not only the advertised fee.
  6. Privacy and company risk: Check email, identity, biometric and cloud requirements, third-party providers, regional restrictions, audit scope, open-source coverage and the provider’s operating history.

Quick comparison

Wallet Type and signing model Recovery Best fit Main concern
Plus Wallet Mobile software; vendor claims user private-key control Encrypted backup and key flow require verification Mobile swaps and rewards Limited independently documented technical detail
Zengo Mobile two-party MPC Email, cloud recovery file and biometric FaceLock People who dislike seed phrases Normal signing depends on Zengo infrastructure
Ledger Stax Hardware signer with Secure Element and Secure Screen Secret Recovery Phrase on another compatible Ledger Long-term holdings and clear signing Seed-phrase responsibility and premium cost
Bybit Wallet Current model must be verified; do not confuse it with exchange custody Verify seed, MPC or account-based recovery Active Bybit/Web3 users Product, fee and jurisdiction ambiguity
SafePal S1/App Mobile app plus air-gapped QR hardware Seed phrase Budget hardware and offline QR signing More friction and app ecosystem dependencies

Plus Wallet: best for mobile swaps and rewards, subject to verification

What it is

Plus Wallet presents itself as an Android and iOS Web3 wallet with multi-chain management, cross-chain swaps, biometric authentication, encrypted backup, price alerts and USDT rewards for eligible swaps and referrals. Its homepage highlights Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, BNB, Solana and Arbitrum, but you should use the live in-app asset list rather than infer complete coverage from those examples. Plus Wallet’s official site is the starting point.

Security and recovery

The company says users control their private keys and that backups are encrypted. Those are first-party claims, not independent verification of where keys or backups are stored. Before depositing meaningful funds, confirm whether the wallet generates a conventional seed phrase, whether keys are local, whether backups are server-assisted and whether you can restore into another compatible wallet if the app or its servers disappear.

The homepage says Hacken and CertiK audits are planned or underway in the retrieved material; do not treat Plus Wallet as audited unless a completed, public report and date are available.

Costs and rewards

Ask for the exact swap spread, provider fee, network fee and withdrawal charge. Confirm the USDT reward formula, minimums, lockups, expiry, geographic eligibility and whether rewards are worth more than the swap costs. Cross-chain swaps commonly use centralized liquidity providers even when the wallet itself is non-custodial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict

Plus Wallet may suit a user who values a simple mobile interface, swaps and promotional rewards. It is a weaker choice for a substantial long-term balance until its key portability, fee schedule and completed audit evidence are clear. Download only through the official site and verify the publisher in the relevant app store.

Zengo: best for seed-phrase-averse users

How its MPC model works

Zengo says two-party MPC keeps one secret share on your device and another in Zengo infrastructure. The parties jointly sign without either side holding a complete traditional private key. Details are documented at Zengo’s security page and its security-model help article.

Recovery and Web3 protection

Zengo’s stated three-factor recovery uses an email address, a recovery file stored through supported cloud services and biometric FaceLock. Losing a phone is manageable only if those factors remain available. “No seed phrase” removes one failure mode; it does not remove recovery responsibility.

Its ClearSign feature warns about potentially risky blockchain interactions. It is a warning system, not a guarantee that a malicious transaction cannot be approved. Verify the website, recipient, network, amount, token allowance and signature yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs and fees

Normal MPC signing involves Zengo server participation. Zengo’s documentation discusses the possibility of the company ceasing operations and a separate guaranteed-access service intended to mitigate that dependency. Users who require a recovery phrase that works without the provider may prefer a conventional hardware wallet.

Zengo says buying, trading and swapping can include provider fees and spread, while transfers incur network fees. Check the confirmation screen for the actual total. Its audit and open-source claims should be read with their specific scope and dates, rather than as a blanket security guarantee. See Zengo’s fee and security explanation.

Rank #3
Ledger Nano Gen5 - Crypto Wallet - Securely Buy Digital Assets - Black
  • More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.
  • Industry-defining security: battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, protected by the Secure Element, and powered by Ledger OS.

  • Playful, user-friendly design: monitor the market, compare rates and Clear Sign all transactions on the secure 2.8'' anti-glare, scratch-resistant touchscreen.
  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

Verdict

Zengo is a strong fit for beginners who fear losing or exposing a seed phrase and want mobile-first Web3 access. It is a poor fit for anyone unwilling to protect email, cloud recovery and biometrics or who rejects provider participation in signing.

Ledger Stax: best premium hardware signer for long-term holdings

Security and usability

Ledger Stax uses a Secure Element and a Secure Screen that Ledger says is controlled by the Secure Element, allowing you to inspect what is actually approved. The device is listed at approximately 85 mm × 54 mm × 6 mm and 44.2 g. It signs transactions; your coins remain on their blockchains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ledger lists support for thousands of coins, tokens and NFTs through third-party wallets, while Ledger Wallet directly supports more than 500 assets. Confirm whether your exact asset is supported in the Ledger app, on Stax and in the required third-party wallet using Ledger’s asset list.

Recovery and failure modes

If Stax is lost, Ledger says you can restore on another compatible Ledger with the Secret Recovery Phrase. Entering the wrong PIN three times resets the device; that protects the device but cannot replace the phrase. Write the phrase privately, preferably on a durable backup, and never photograph or cloud-sync it.

Secure hardware does not stop you from approving a malicious contract, poisoned address, permit signature or fake dApp. Check the recipient, network, token contract, amount and permissions on the device. Some assets require third-party software. Optional recovery services are not required to use the signer and have their own privacy, identity and subscription implications.

Verdict

Stax is the best match here for a meaningful long-term balance when you accept the cost and the discipline of seed-phrase custody. It is excessive for tiny, frequent spending balances and unsuitable for someone unwilling to manage a recovery phrase. Buy through the official US page: Ledger Stax. Bybit Wallet: convenient ecosystem choice, but verify the current model

Do not confuse it with exchange custody

Money in a Bybit exchange account is custodial exchange money, not automatically self-custody. “Bybit Wallet” may refer to a separate Web3 product, and its current custody architecture must be checked in the live interface and documentation.

What remains to verify

  • Whether the wallet uses MPC, a seed phrase or another architecture.
  • Whether Bybit participates in signing or recovery.
  • Supported chains, assets, import/export and recovery behavior.
  • Wallet swap, bridge, gas, withdrawal and provider fees.
  • Whether the wallet works without an exchange account.
  • Country-specific availability and restrictions.

The retrieved official Web3 URL redirected to the main site, while the available documentation was primarily a user agreement. Start at Bybit’s official site and read the current wallet terms before transferring funds. The agreement at Bybit’s user-agreement PDF is not, by itself, a complete technical wallet specification.

Verdict

Bybit Wallet can make sense for an experienced Bybit/Web3 user who has confirmed custody, recovery, fees and jurisdiction. It should not rank as a decentralized wallet merely because it sits beside a Web3 ecosystem, and it is a poor fit for someone seeking maximum separation from centralized exchanges.

SafePal Wallet and S1: best budget air-gapped hardware option

App versus hardware

SafePal Wallet may mean the mobile app; SafePal S1 is the separate hardware device that pairs with it. The S1 advertises an EAL6+ secure element, 100% air-gapped QR signing, open-source security components, an anti-tampering self-destruct mechanism, passphrase support and support for more than 200 blockchains. Normal S1 signing uses no Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC or USB.

  • Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).

Cost and practical trade-offs

SafePal’s store displayed the S1 at $49.99, X1 at $69.99 and S1 Pro at $89.99 when the information was collected; VAT and duty were excluded and prices can change by country, promotion, shipping and tax. See SafePal’s official store. The listed 400 mAh battery and up-to-20-day estimate are manufacturer figures based on 10 minutes of use per day.

QR signing reduces attack surface but adds camera-scanning steps. The seed phrase remains essential, and a self-destruct feature does not recover funds. “200+ blockchains” does not mean every token has equal transfer, dApp, staking or swap support. SafePal’s app includes swaps, yield features, NFTs, fiat gateways and a dApp gateway; those can add provider, spread, gas, smart-contract and geographic risks.

Verdict

S1 is the value choice for users who want dedicated hardware and deliberately accept a slower QR workflow. Choose another model or a software wallet if Bluetooth or USB convenience matters more than air-gapping.

Which wallet should you choose?

  • For substantial long-term savings: Ledger Stax if you want a premium secure display; SafePal S1 if you want lower-cost air-gapped signing.
  • If seed phrases are your biggest fear: Zengo, provided you can protect email, cloud recovery and biometrics and accept its infrastructure dependency.
  • For mobile swapping and rewards: Plus Wallet, after checking current reward terms, spreads, fees, backup portability and audit reports.
  • If you live in the Bybit ecosystem: Bybit Wallet only after confirming the current custody and recovery model in your jurisdiction.
  • For a two-wallet setup: Keep a small hot-wallet balance for routine dApps and a separate hardware wallet for savings. Do not expose the vault to experimental contracts.

Safe setup, backup and recovery checklist

  1. Start from the vendor’s official website, then verify the app publisher and hardware packaging.
  2. Initialize a new wallet privately; never use a prewritten phrase or someone else’s recovery file.
  3. Record seed words offline, or for MPC protect every required recovery factor. Never photograph a seed phrase or place it in ordinary cloud storage.
  4. Use a durable metal backup for a meaningful hardware balance and store backups separately from the device.
  5. Test restoration with a small amount before relying on the wallet.
  6. Send a small test transaction and confirm the exact network and address before moving the rest.
  7. On every dApp, inspect recipient, contract, amount, allowance and signature. Reject “required” approvals you do not understand.
  8. Revoke unused token approvals and keep long-term funds separate from DeFi experiments.
  9. Document an inheritance plan without revealing the secret itself; a wallet that only you can recover may be lost with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are decentralized wallets safer than exchanges?

Self-custody can remove exchange-account and withdrawal-freeze risk, but it transfers responsibility to you. A stolen seed phrase, compromised recovery factor or malicious approval can still result in permanent loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is MPC safer than a seed phrase?

MPC reduces the single-secret failure of a seed phrase, but it introduces recovery-factor and provider-infrastructure dependencies. Neither model is automatically safer for every user.

Is a hardware wallet always safer than a mobile wallet?

Hardware isolates signing credentials, which is valuable for savings, but a user can still approve a malicious transaction. A carefully used mobile wallet may be adequate for small spending balances.

What happens if a wallet company closes?

A standards-based hardware wallet can often be restored with its recovery phrase in compatible software. MPC or proprietary encrypted-backup wallets may require a provider migration or guaranteed-access process, so check portability before depositing.

Can I use two wallets at once?

Yes. Using a small hot wallet for routine Web3 activity and a separate hardware vault limits the amount exposed to dApps and routine mistakes.
