How Neobanks and Cash Apps Are Reshaping the U.S. Fintech Landscape

Neobanks and cash apps are not simply replacing banks. They are separating the banking interface from the regulated infrastructure—and changing how Americans pay, save, borrow and invest.

Neobanks and cash apps are moving everyday banking into a phone: paychecks arrive by direct deposit, friends settle bills instantly, debit cards update balances in real time, savings can be automated, and credit, investing and lending sit beside payments. The shift is substantial—49.7% of U.S. households used a nonbank online payment service in the FDIC’s 2023 survey—but it is not the disappearance of banks. It is the disaggregation of banking: an app owns the customer experience while a bank, card network, processor, brokerage or other regulated entity supplies much of the infrastructure.

That distinction determines what is insured, who is responsible when something goes wrong, how the platform earns money and whether an app is suitable for a paycheck, an emergency fund or only occasional payments.

Neobank, cash app and bank: three different relationships

“Neobank” has no single U.S. legal definition. The practical term describes a digital-first financial-services brand with little or no branch network. Some neobanks are licensed banks; others are fintech companies that use sponsor banks. The U.S. Treasury uses the term broadly enough to include both digital-only insured depository institutions and fintech interfaces for banking services (Treasury report).

A cash app usually began as a payment product. Cash App, Venmo and PayPal let users send money, pay merchants and hold a balance; many now add cards, direct deposit, savings, investing, crypto or borrowing. Chime, Varo, Current and similar brands begin with a spending or checking-like relationship and add payments and other products. SoFi combines banking with lending, investing and insurance-related services.

Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.

Relationship Primary purpose Typical legal structure Main consumer question
Neobank or fintech banking brand Spending, direct deposit, savings, credit and liquidity Either a chartered bank or a fintech using one or more partner banks Which legal entity holds the deposit?
Payment-first cash app Peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments and stored value Usually a nonbank payment platform with bank and processor relationships Is the stored balance an insured deposit?
Chartered bank Deposits, lending and payments under a bank charter Insured depository institution, subject to bank supervision What products and channels does the bank provide directly?
Fintech interface App design, distribution and product bundling Relies on sponsor banks, card networks, processors or brokerages What happens if a partner, processor or account review interrupts access?

Chime says it is a financial technology company rather than a bank, while Cash App says it is a financial-services platform, not a bank (Chime; Cash App).

Why consumers are adopting app-based finance

Mobile onboarding removes a branch visit, and a well-designed app makes routine actions visible immediately. The strongest adoption drivers are:

  • Rapid account opening and identity verification.
  • Direct-deposit access, sometimes with funds available up to two days early (never a guarantee).
  • Low or invisible monthly fees compared with legacy checking accounts.
  • Real-time alerts, budgeting tools and automated savings.
  • Peer-to-peer payments embedded in social and commerce networks.
  • Retail locations for cash deposits and broad card acceptance.
  • Credit-building products and small-dollar liquidity for people poorly served by conventional credit.
  • One login for spending, saving, investing, tax or borrowing.

Chime describes a strategy built around spending, saving, liquidity access and credit building (its 2025 filing). Cash App advertises direct deposit, early availability, savings, cash deposits at more than 85,000 locations, overdraft coverage and investing-related services (Cash App direct deposit). “No monthly fee,” however, is not the same as no cost: ATM, instant-transfer, cash-deposit, foreign-transaction, expedited-card and borrowing fees can still apply.

The infrastructure hidden behind the app

The screen may look like one company, but several entities can touch a transaction.

Layer Typical responsibility
Fintech app User interface, marketing, account experience and product bundling
Sponsor bank Deposit account, bank relationship and sometimes card issuing
Card network Visa or Mastercard transaction rails
Processor and ledger provider Authorization, recordkeeping, settlement and fraud controls
Brokerage or crypto provider Securities custody, clearing, execution or digital-asset services
Regulators Oversight tied to the activity and legal entity

Chime identifies The Bancorp Bank and Stride Bank as FDIC-insured partner banks (Chime). Cash App’s terms identify different bank partners, including Sutton Bank, Wells Fargo Bank and The Bancorp Bank, depending on the product (Cash App terms). A change or outage at any layer can affect a customer even when another layer remains solvent.

How these companies make money

Interchange

When a customer uses a debit or credit card, the merchant pays a card-acceptance fee and the issuer may receive an interchange share. Chime says interchange is its primary model. SoFi reported that interchange represented 15% of its Financial Services noninterest income in 2025 (SoFi 2025 filing); that is a company-specific mix, not an industry average.

Interest and lending

Platforms or their bank partners may earn interest on deposits, loans or other balances. Revenue can also come from personal loans, credit cards, credit-builder products, buy-now-pay-later arrangements, small-dollar advances and overdraft-like coverage. A coverage feature is not automatically free credit: eligibility, repayment and limits depend on the product agreement.

Subscriptions and cross-selling

Premium memberships can fund higher yields, rewards or larger limits. A direct-deposit relationship also gives a platform opportunities to sell savings, lending, insurance, tax services or investing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brokerage, crypto and commerce

Brokerage and crypto products may generate trading spreads, securities-lending revenue, payment-for-order-flow revenue where applicable, or other fees. Merchant acceptance, business accounts, in-app checkout, advertising and payroll services add commerce revenue. These activities are separate from deposit insurance.

Deposit insurance: the safety question consumers must answer

FDIC insurance generally protects eligible deposits at an insured bank if that bank fails, up to applicable limits. It does not reimburse market losses, fraud, unauthorized transfers, a bad investment decision or every balance displayed in an app.

The CFPB has warned that billions of dollars held on popular payment apps may lack federal deposit insurance and that coverage can vary by product and by what the customer does (CFPB analysis; CFPB warning). Before moving a paycheck or emergency fund, identify:

  • The named bank holding the money.
  • The exact account or card required for pass-through coverage.
  • Whether funds are pooled and whether records identify each owner.
  • Whether pending transactions or stored-value balances are treated as deposits.
  • Whether investments, bitcoin and other assets are excluded.
  • Whether deposits at the same bank in other accounts count toward the applicable limit.

Cash App’s terms say a Cash App Card or qualifying sponsored account is required for pass-through FDIC eligibility, subject to conditions. Without a qualifying relationship, a Cash App balance may not receive that coverage (Cash App terms).

Payments are becoming app-native, not cash-free

Digital platforms have shifted routine transfers from cash, checks and branch-based bill payment toward instant or near-real-time peer payments, QR checkout, app-linked debit cards, retail cash loading and direct deposits into nontraditional accounts. Cash remains important, especially for cash-intensive workers and small businesses; the better conclusion is that apps have made digital payment the default for many social and everyday purchases.

That convenience can be costly. Cash App’s terms list charges including a $2.50 ATM withdrawal fee, a $1 paper-money-deposit fee and instant-transfer fees of 0.5% to 2.5%, subject to minimums and maximums (Cash App terms). Its terms state that after June 29, 2026, the $1 paper-money-deposit fee is no longer waived for Green customers.

Cash App: payments expanding into a financial hub

Cash App illustrates the payment-first path: peer-to-peer transfers lead to a card, direct deposit, savings, cash deposits, overdraft coverage, investing, bitcoin, borrowing and merchant services. It advertises up to $200 in free overdraft coverage for eligible customers with qualifying deposits (Cash App fee page), and direct deposits may arrive up to two days early (Cash App direct deposit).

Cash App’s savings explanation lists a base rate of 1.5% and up to 3.25% APY with Green status as of May 2026; the higher rate depends on qualification and can change (Cash App savings explanation). Brokerage and bitcoin holdings are non-deposit products and are not FDIC-insured (Cash App disclosures). A user who needs branches, full-service brokerage tools, frequent instant transfers or a large insured reserve may need another primary relationship.

  • Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.

Chime: the partner-bank neobank playbook

Chime packages spending, savings, direct deposit, early-pay access, fee-free overdraft features and credit building in a mobile-first experience. Its economics emphasize card interchange and recurring engagement rather than branch fees. The Chime brand is not the insured bank; deposits are held through regulated partner banks, and product terms and partners can change (Chime product explanation).

This model can lower entry barriers for direct-deposit customers, but it is a poor fit for someone who needs a branch network, complex business banking, extensive wire services or traditional cash management.

SoFi: from lending to a broader financial ecosystem

SoFi combines checking and savings with personal lending, investing, credit cards, insurance-related services and crypto. It reported $3.6 billion in total net revenue for 2025 (SoFi 2025 filing). Its first-quarter 2026 filing describes an Insured Deposit Program with expanded coverage of up to $3 million under stated conditions, along with crypto and stablecoin-related initiatives (SoFi Q1 2026 filing). Those limits and eligibility rules must be confirmed in the current account agreement; they are not a general promise for every SoFi balance.

SoFi suits consumers who value an integrated ecosystem. It is less suitable for someone seeking only a simple payment wallet or who wants to avoid investment and crypto cross-selling.

Access and inclusion have limits

App-based finance can help people who face branch scarcity, minimum-balance requirements or conventional credit barriers. Retail cash loading, credit-building accounts and faster access to wages can be meaningful. But the same model depends on a working smartphone, broadband, identity verification and a functioning partner network.

  • Cash-heavy users may pay repeated deposit or ATM fees.
  • Language, disability and accessibility support varies by provider.
  • Advances, overdraft substitutes and BNPL can encourage paycheck cycling or debt dependence.

Ask whether a credit product reports to bureaus, uses a hard inquiry, charges a mandatory or optional fee and requires repayment on a fixed schedule. “Financial access” is not the same as improved financial health.

Account freezes, fraud and irreversible payments

Platforms may restrict access during fraud investigations, identity reviews, suspicious-activity monitoring, chargebacks, disputed transfers, sanctions screening, outages or partner-bank disruptions. The CFPB has noted that losing access to a popular payment app can disrupt payroll, recurring payments and essential spending (CFPB oversight statement).

Scams include fake support accounts, romance and investment schemes, manipulated QR codes, SIM swaps, account takeovers, stolen credentials and wrong-recipient transfers. A transaction can be authorized by the account holder yet fraudulent in ordinary language, and recovery may be harder than with a credit-card charge. Verify recipients independently, never share a one-time code, enable multifactor authentication and alerts, and keep records of statements and disputes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A resilient setup

  • Maintain a backup bank or credit-union account.
  • Keep an emergency reserve outside a payment wallet.
  • Use a second payment method when traveling or paying essential bills.
  • Learn the app’s dispute and escalation process before a problem occurs.
  • Lock cards and review alerts immediately after an unfamiliar transaction.

How traditional banks are responding

Fintechs have not uniformly displaced banks. They have unbundled parts of the relationship and raised expectations for instant notifications, rapid transfers, transparent pricing, competitive savings yields and digital account opening. Banks are responding with mobile-first products, real-time payments, rewards, automated savings and stronger fraud systems while continuing to supply regulated balance sheets and payment infrastructure.

The likely outcome is convergence: banks compete for the interface and direct deposit, fintechs depend on bank and payment infrastructure, and consumers maintain several specialized relationships rather than one institution for every need.

A practical framework for choosing an app

  1. Confirm legal status: determine whether the provider is a bank, a bank-owned app or a fintech intermediary.
  2. Map insurance: identify the insured bank, qualifying product, ownership records and exclusions.
  3. Price your behavior: add monthly, ATM, cash-deposit, instant-transfer, foreign-use, replacement-card, membership and borrowing costs.
  4. Check access: compare ATM networks, retail deposits, transfer limits, payroll compatibility and support channels.
  5. Read yield conditions: separate base APY from promotional or direct-deposit and spending requirements.
  6. Review disputes and stability: understand card-lock tools, fraud alerts, human escalation and backup access.
  7. Separate products: treat savings, brokerage, crypto, pending payments and stored value under their own agreements.
  8. Match the use case: choose differently for primary checking, a spending wallet, emergency savings, credit building, cash-heavy work or investing.

For a comparison, Cash App is strongest as a payment-centered wallet that has broadened into banking-like services; Chime is oriented toward a primary mobile spending relationship; SoFi targets a broader financial ecosystem. None should be selected on headline APY, “free” language or early-pay marketing alone.
