The companies announced the deal on April 14, 2025, and did not disclose a purchase price. Pollen is best known for its open-source Reachy robots. The acquisition moved Hugging Face beyond models and datasets into physical AI, but it does not mean the company has released a mass-market humanoid worker for the home.
What happened in the acquisition?
Hugging Face said Pollen Robotics had joined the company on April 14, 2025. Pollen, founded in France in 2016 by a team that included Matthieu Lapeyre and Pierre Rouanet, develops open-source robots for research, education, teleoperation and embodied-AI experiments. The transaction value and other financial terms were not disclosed. Hugging Face’s announcement describes the combination as a way to make robotics more open, affordable and private.
The timing matters. In 2026, this is an update to a 2025 deal—not a newly announced acquisition. The continuing story is what Hugging Face and Pollen have built around the hardware, software and developer community since the announcement.
Who is Pollen Robotics?
Pollen is a French robotics company whose distinctive proposition is openness. Its robots are intended to give researchers and developers access to the mechanical platform, control software and tools needed to test embodied-AI systems. Pollen’s work has covered human-robot interaction, remote operation, education and real-world robotics experiments.

Hugging Face said Pollen had deployed hundreds of robots in more than 20 countries. That is a company-provided figure, not an independently audited installed-base measure, so it is best read as an indication of reach rather than proof of commercial scale.
What Reachy 2 actually is
Reachy 2 is the flagship platform associated with the acquisition. It is a research-and-development robot, not a low-cost household appliance. Hugging Face describes it as open source in hardware and software, compatible with VR teleoperation and designed for research, education and machine-learning experimentation.
- Two seven-degree-of-freedom arms.
- Object manipulation of up to approximately 3 kilograms, according to Hugging Face’s product description.
- A mobile base with omniwheels and LiDAR.
- Support for remote presence and teleoperated data collection.
- A listed price of $70,000, with buyers directed to contact sales.
That price places Reachy 2 in the university, corporate-lab and advanced robotics category. It should not be confused with a bipedal industrial humanoid designed for warehouse work, or with a consumer robot intended to perform general household chores.
Why Hugging Face wanted a robotics company
Embodied AI needs a body
Hugging Face’s software platform is built around models, datasets, code and community contributions. A physical robot supplies the environment in which an AI system must perceive, decide and act. Owning or closely integrating a hardware platform gives developers a repeatable way to collect data, run experiments and evaluate models outside a screen.

An open alternative to closed robot stacks
Hugging Face says its objective is to make robotics more open, affordable and private. In practical terms, that means encouraging inspectable control software, modifiable hardware designs, shared datasets and community-built applications rather than requiring every developer to use a closed vendor stack.
“Open-source robot” still needs qualification. Hardware designs, control software, models, electronics, cloud services and user-created apps can have different licenses and ownership. Buying a Reachy does not automatically make every component or data flow open.
A potential full-stack platform
The strategic thesis combines robot hardware with LeRobot software, training datasets, foundation models, simulation, evaluation and a community application layer. This is a plausible direction inferred from Hugging Face’s robotics work and product ecosystem; it is not evidence that the company has already delivered a fully integrated, general-purpose autonomy platform.
Hugging Face’s robotics work before the deal
The acquisition followed existing collaboration. Hugging Face launched the LeRobot open-source robotics library in 2024, with the effort led by Rémi Cadène, formerly associated with Tesla’s Optimus research. The company and Pollen had already worked together on Reachy 2.

What the deal does not prove
- It does not show that Hugging Face has a mass-market humanoid worker.
- It does not make Reachy 2 affordable to ordinary consumers.
- It does not establish that every hardware, model, electronics or cloud component is open.
- It does not reveal the purchase price, Pollen’s valuation, transferred headcount or Hugging Face’s return on investment.
- It does not demonstrate reliable, general-purpose household autonomy.
Robotics also brings costs that software platforms do not face: manufacturing, inventory, safety testing, warranty and repair, replacement parts, calibration, shipping, physical damage, liability and privacy issues involving cameras and microphones. DIY kits add assembly, computer-compatibility, network-configuration and troubleshooting responsibilities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the strategy compares with other robotics approaches
| Approach | Representative organization | Strategic emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Open developer and research ecosystem | Hugging Face/Pollen | Shared models, datasets, hardware and community apps |
| Commercial home-robot ambition | 1X Technologies | More vertically integrated product development |
| Industrial humanoids | Figure AI; Agility Robotics | Commercial and warehouse deployment |
| Developer hardware at broader price points | Unitree | Research and developer-accessible robots |
| Robotics infrastructure | NVIDIA Isaac | Simulation, software and foundation-model tooling |
These are strategic contrasts, not like-for-like performance or price comparisons. Hugging Face’s distinctive bet is the community layer: a robotics equivalent of sharing models, datasets and applications on an open platform.
Should you buy one?
Reachy Mini Wireless
At the listed $499 price, the Wireless model is aimed at makers, educators, developers and creative coders who want onboard computing and network connectivity. It is a poor fit if you expect a full-size humanoid, household labor or maintenance-free plug-and-play operation.
Reachy Mini Lite
The $399 Lite model reduces hardware cost but requires an external Mac or PC. It makes sense for developers who already have a capable computer and want a lower-cost experimentation platform, not for buyers seeking a standalone appliance.

Reachy 2
Reachy 2’s listed $70,000 price and sales-contact purchasing process signal a research procurement decision. It suits institutions with robotics expertise, integration budgets and a specific embodied-AI program—not casual hobby spending.
For software work, the Hugging Face platform and LeRobot repository let developers explore the ecosystem before committing to hardware. Organizations that require guaranteed industrial uptime, formal service levels or a single-vendor safety-certification path may find a turnkey commercial robotics supplier more appropriate.
Bottom line
Hugging Face’s purchase of Pollen Robotics was real, announced April 14, 2025, and financially undisclosed. Its importance is strategic: Hugging Face is trying to extend its open model-and-community playbook into physical AI, linking hardware, datasets, software and applications. Reachy 2 demonstrates the research-grade end of that plan, while Reachy Mini shows a lower-cost maker and education tier. Neither product establishes that Hugging Face has solved general-purpose robot autonomy or entered the market for mass-produced household humanoid workers.
