Verizon Business announced on November 3, 2025, that it had reached a Verizon AI Connect agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build new, long-haul, high-capacity fiber pathways between AWS data-center locations. The companies describe the project as infrastructure for resilient, low-latency connectivity supporting large-scale AI applications—not as a consumer broadband rollout or construction of AWS data centers.

The announcement does not disclose the routes, facilities, mileage, fiber capacity, construction schedule, contract value, or whether the assets will be exclusive to AWS. Those omissions matter: the public facts support a significant carrier-network agreement, but not claims of a completed nationwide AI network or guaranteed faster performance for every AWS customer.

What Verizon and AWS actually announced

The agreement is between Verizon Business and AWS and is presented under Verizon’s AI Connect portfolio. Verizon says it will build new long-haul, high-capacity fiber pathways connecting AWS data-center locations. The stated goals are greater capacity, resilience and low latency for AWS services used to build and deploy advanced AI applications. Verizon’s announcement does not say that Verizon is building AWS facilities, a separate nationwide network or a customer-facing broadband product.

“Will build” is important. The public statement describes a planned network-build commitment rather than an operational route that customers can use today.

Why AI infrastructure needs more fiber

Generative-AI systems move unusually large volumes of data among compute clusters, storage systems, cloud regions and enterprise sites. Training can repeatedly exchange model parameters and datasets; distributed inference may need predictable paths between services; and organizations increasingly place data and compute in more than one facility.

  • Capacity: More optical bandwidth reduces bottlenecks when large datasets or model checkpoints move between facilities.
  • Latency: Direct, well-engineered paths can reduce network-related delay and improve synchronization or interactive workloads.
  • Resilience: Additional routes can help services continue operating when a fiber cut, equipment failure or other incident affects one path.

Fiber alone does not make every AI application faster. End-to-end results also depend on where compute and storage sit, congestion, routing, application design and AWS service configuration.

Data-center interconnection is different from ordinary internet access

This project is best understood as backbone and data-center interconnection. Carrier-managed, private or dedicated links connect facilities and network locations; they are not primarily an upgrade to residential internet service.

AWS Direct Connect is a separate customer-access service. It connects a customer network to AWS through a Direct Connect location instead of relying solely on public-internet routing. AWS describes charges in terms of port capacity and port-hours, with additional data-transfer pricing. See the AWS Direct Connect overview and service page. Verizon’s new pathways may support AWS’s underlying infrastructure, but the announcement does not establish that an individual customer can order one of those routes directly.

What “high-capacity,” “low-latency” and “resilient” mean here

High capacity

Verizon has not published a capacity figure for this AWS build. For context only, Verizon’s broader AI Connect material describes Wavelength with up to 400 Gb/s dedicated point-to-point Ethernet transport and describes dark fiber as scalable without predefined service tiers. Those portfolio capabilities do not prove that this project will use 400 Gb/s links or dark fiber. Verizon’s AI Connect solution brief contains those broader references.

Low latency

The companies state a low-latency objective but publish no route, round-trip target or service-level commitment. A shorter or more direct private path may improve predictability, but it cannot eliminate propagation delay or guarantee faster responses from every model or application.

Resilience

Neither company has disclosed the project’s physical design. In general, resilience can involve diverse routes, separate data-center entrances, multiple network paths, redundant optical equipment, automatic rerouting or capacity reserved for failover. These are possible design approaches, not confirmed Verizon–AWS specifications.

How the build fits Verizon AI Connect

Verizon positions AI Connect as a portfolio combining network connectivity with data-center and colocation services, security, programmable networking, Wavelength edge infrastructure, dark fiber and compute-related offerings. The AWS agreement supplies a major hyperscaler use case for that strategy and broadens Verizon’s positioning from wireless carrier to AI-infrastructure provider.

The commercial opportunity is generally business-to-business: hyperscalers, carriers and large enterprises may buy managed connectivity, Ethernet, interconnection, dark fiber, security or related services. Verizon has not published a standard price for this agreement or for the overall AI Connect portfolio.

How this differs from Verizon–AWS Wavelength

Verizon and AWS previously collaborated on AWS Wavelength, which places selected AWS compute and storage services at the edge of Verizon’s 5G network for applications close to mobile devices and users. AWS explains that architecture in its Wavelength deployment account.

The new agreement concerns long-haul fiber between AWS data-center locations. It is not simply an expansion of 5G edge computing, and it does not replace Wavelength or AWS Direct Connect.

What remains undisclosed

  • The AWS facilities and geographic corridors involved.
  • Total route mileage and the number of fiber pairs or wavelengths.
  • Whether Verizon will construct new rights-of-way, use existing routes, lease capacity, or combine those methods.
  • Construction phases, completion dates and when capacity will become operational.
  • Contract value, expected Verizon revenue, capital expenditure and customer pricing.
  • Physical ownership, third-party access and whether any route is exclusive to AWS.
  • Latency targets, uptime commitments and the specific redundancy design.
  • Whether AWS customers will have a new, separately orderable product using these paths.

Competitive context: AWS is adding multiple network partners

The Verizon agreement sits within a broader hyperscaler-connectivity trend. AWS and Lumen announced a 2024 partnership involving fiber connectivity to AWS data centers and support for enterprise AI applications across AWS Regions and Local Zones; details are in the AWS–Lumen announcement. In February 2026, AWS and AT&T announced work that included high-capacity fiber connecting AWS data-center locations, described in Amazon’s AT&T announcement.

For a customer, the practical comparison is not simply which carrier has the most fiber. It is which provider reaches the required AWS Region or facility, can supply physically diverse paths, offers the necessary bandwidth and service-level agreement, and can provision it within the project timetable and budget.

What the deal means for AWS customers

Customers may benefit indirectly if the new routes give AWS more capacity or route diversity, but the announcement does not grant automatic access, lower AWS bills or faster application responses. A customer designing private connectivity may still need AWS Direct Connect, a delivery partner, colocation and cross-connects, redundant circuits, routing and security services.

AWS lists dedicated Direct Connect port-hour rates outside Japan of $0.30 per hour for 1 Gbps, $2.25 for 10 Gbps, $22.50 for 100 Gbps and $85 for 400 Gbps on its pricing page as of August 16, 2026. Those are AWS port charges, not the total connection cost: carrier transport, partner service, colocation, cross-connects, installation, redundancy and applicable outbound data-transfer charges can be additional. See AWS Direct Connect pricing and connection options.

Common misreadings to avoid

  • “Verizon is building AWS data centers.” The announcement concerns fiber pathways between AWS locations.
  • “This is a consumer Verizon fiber rollout.” The disclosed project is business infrastructure for AWS connectivity.
  • “All AI will become faster.” Benefits depend on traffic geography, compute placement, storage and application architecture.
  • “The network is nationwide or already live.” No route map or operating date has been published.
  • “400 Gb/s is this project’s speed.” That figure is a broader AI Connect reference, not a deal specification.
  • “AWS prices will fall.” No such commitment was announced.

The Bottom Line

Verizon is expanding its AI-infrastructure strategy with a planned build of long-haul fiber pathways for AWS data-center connectivity. It is a meaningful backbone agreement, but the public announcement leaves the routes, capacity, economics, timetable and customer-access model unknown.
