Yes, Verizon internet can cost about $20 a month, but that headline describes two different offers. Verizon Forward is an assistance-based discount that can reduce eligible home-internet service by up to $30 monthly, while a separate Fios promotion advertises $19.99 for qualifying new customers with Verizon postpaid mobile service. Your address, eligibility, plan, taxes, fees and promotional end date determine the actual bill.
The two Verizon offers behind the $20 headline
| Offer | Who it targets | How the price is reduced | Price claim | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon Forward | Customers qualifying through Lifeline, SNAP, WIC, Pell Grant or other listed programs | Up to $30 off eligible monthly service | As low as $20; final price varies by plan | Eligibility and address availability are required |
| Fios promotional bundle | Eligible new Fios customers with qualifying postpaid Verizon mobile service | $15 Mobile + Home discount plus a $15 bonus discount | $19.99 per month for Fios 300 Mbps | Limited-time offer with 36 months of credits and new-customer rules |
| Lifeline | Eligible low-income households | Federal discount of up to $9.25 on qualifying service | Not a universal Verizon $20 plan | Only one benefit per household; Verizon broadband availability is state-limited |
Verizon Forward, the Fios offer and USAC Lifeline rules have separate terms.
Who can qualify for Verizon Forward?
Verizon says eligible new and existing residential customers may receive the discount when they have qualifying service available at their address and meet one of these pathways:
- Current or recent eligibility for Lifeline, SNAP or WIC.
- Federal Public Housing Assistance, including Section 8; Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance; Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations; Tribal TANF; or qualifying Tribal Head Start.
- A Federal Pell Grant received within the previous year.
For most listed assistance programs, Verizon describes a lookback period of generally 180 days. The discount can be up to $30 per month, but Verizon does not promise that every qualifying customer will have a $20 bill. The plan sold at the address and other applicable discounts determine the final price. Verizon Forward is Verizon’s discount program, not a government benefit.

Services that may qualify
Verizon lists eligible in-market residential services including Fios Internet plans (such as listed 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gig and 2 Gig tiers), 5G Home Internet, LTE Home for existing customers, Verizon Home Internet Lite and certain Frontier Fiber plans in Verizon’s footprint. Speeds, availability and prices vary by address. Verizon’s current FAQ says new LTE Home signups are no longer available, although existing customers may have plan options.
Lifeline rules that affect Verizon customers
You may qualify for Lifeline through a participating program or household income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The income figures vary by household size and by location; Alaska and Hawaii use different guidelines. Check the current USAC eligibility information rather than relying on an old income chart.
- The standard benefit is up to $9.25 per month for qualifying phone, internet or bundled service.
- Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household.
- Eligibility is generally verified through the federal National Verifier.
Verizon’s Fios Lifeline service is listed in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington, D.C. That state list is narrower than Verizon Forward’s broader program. See Verizon’s Lifeline information for current state and application rules.

New York and Connecticut pathways
New York residents may have additional eligibility through the state Affordable Broadband Act, including certain school-lunch, rent-increase-exemption and utility-affordability programs. Connecticut residents may qualify through pathways such as federal school lunch or the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program. Verizon says qualifying customers in either state may receive eligible service for as low as $20 or less, depending on plan and address.

How the $19.99 Fios promotion works
The separate Fios offer is for eligible new Fios customers with qualifying postpaid Verizon mobile service, Auto Pay and the Mobile + Home Discount. Verizon’s cited offer advertises Fios 300 Mbps at $19.99 per month after a $15 Mobile + Home discount and a $15 bonus discount.
The promotional credits apply for 36 billing months. Verizon says standard rates begin with month 37, and a $99 setup charge may apply. If you would add an expensive mobile line solely to obtain the internet price, compare the combined mobile-and-home cost with standalone internet alternatives.

- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
What your first and later bills can include
The advertised service price is not necessarily the amount withdrawn from your bank account. Check each of these items in the order summary and written terms:
- Auto Pay and paper-free-billing discounts.
- Verizon Forward, Mobile + Home and other promotional credits.
- Taxes, regulatory fees and any installation or setup charge.
- Equipment, Wi-Fi or optional add-ons.
- Streaming perks or third-party services billed separately.
- The date that promotional credits expire.
Verizon says its price guarantee generally concerns the then-current base monthly rate and excludes setup charges, taxes, discounts, promotions, plan perks and third-party services. A first bill can therefore be higher if a setup fee applies or a discount posts after enrollment. For LTE Home, Verizon warns that users may experience reduced priority or speeds during congestion after exceeding the applicable usage threshold.

The federal Affordable Connectivity Program is not the current explanation for Verizon’s $20 pricing. Verizon says the ACP’s last fully funded month was April 2024; Verizon Forward is the company’s current assistance-based route.

How to apply and verify the offer
- Open the Verizon Forward page and check home-internet availability at your exact service address.
- Sign in to an existing Verizon account or begin a new residential enrollment.
- Complete Verizon’s eligibility-validation process and review the eligible plans shown for your address.
- If you are using Lifeline, apply through the National Verifier first.
- After Lifeline approval, contact Verizon to select qualifying service and activate the discount. Connecticut applicants should follow Verizon’s paper-application instructions.
- Save the offer terms and inspect the first bill and the next billing cycle to confirm that credits appeared.
Existing customers and discount stacking
Verizon Forward is not limited to new subscribers, so an existing eligible customer should ask whether the discount can be added to the current account before canceling and restarting service. Do not assume Verizon Forward, Auto Pay, a mobile-bundle credit and another promotion will all stack: eligibility and stacking rules vary by plan. The checkout estimate and written terms are controlling.
A qualifying benefit held by one person does not automatically transfer to another account holder. Verify Verizon’s household and account requirements, particularly where one household member receives the benefit and another pays the internet bill.
When Verizon’s $20 route may not be the best deal
- Verizon has no eligible Fios, 5G Home, LTE Home, Home Internet Lite or Frontier Fiber service at the address.
- You do not meet an assistance-program, Pell Grant or applicable state qualification.
- You would take an unnecessarily costly mobile plan to obtain the Fios promotion.
- Your household needs consistently high upload performance but only fixed-wireless or LTE service is available.
- Heavy usage makes possible congestion-related slowdowns unacceptable.
If none of the Verizon routes fits, compare the normal Verizon price with local fiber, cable, fixed-wireless and Lifeline-supported providers. For any advertised $20 rate, confirm the exact plan, speed, promotional duration, setup fee, taxes, equipment costs and post-promotion price before ordering.

Bottom line: Verizon’s $20 claim is real only in specific circumstances. Check Verizon Forward first if you receive a qualifying benefit or Pell Grant; check the $19.99 Fios promotion if you are a qualifying new customer with Verizon postpaid mobile service. In both cases, verify address availability and the complete bill—including fees and the price after promotional credits end—before switching.
