The July 2, 2025 roundup listed an iPad A16 from $284 (with a highlighted $299 Amazon configuration), Apple Pencil Pro for $99, selected M4 iPad Pro models up to $299 off, and AirTags from about $23. Those promotions have expired unless a retailer independently restores them. In August 2026, Apple’s current high-end tablet is the M5 iPad Pro and its current Air generation is the M4 iPad Air.
Use the analysis below to judge whether a similar clearance price is worthwhile, avoid the Apple Pencil compatibility trap, and compare the total system cost before buying.
What the July 2, 2025 roundup actually discounted
The source post was published July 2, 2025, at 8:44 a.m. PT, for the U.S. Fourth of July sales period. Its prices should be treated as historical reference points, not checkout quotes. The original roundup is at 9to5Mac.
| Product and configuration | Retailer/condition | List price | Historical sale price | Discount | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPad A16, configuration highlighted at 299 (screen size, storage and connectivity not stated in the roundup) | Amazon; new condition was not explicitly stated | Not stated | $299 (the article also reported an offer as low as $284) | Not calculable without a stated list price | Expired; configuration and stock must be verified if a similar listing appears |
| Apple Pencil Pro (USB-C charging, compatible iPad models only) | Retailer not specified in the summary; condition not stated | $129 | $99 | $30, about 23.3% | Expired historical price; Apple’s U.S. list price is documented on its accessories store |
| iPad Pro with M4, selected sizes and storage tiers; maximum reduction applied to a particular configuration | Retailer and condition varied; exact configuration for every listing was not stated | Not stated | Up to $299 off; one cited 11-inch, 2TB model was about $1,699.97 | Up to $299; percentage not calculable without each model’s list price | Expired; “up to” applied to selected high-storage inventory, not every M4 Pro |
| AirTag, single unit | Retailer and condition not stated | Not stated | About $23 | Not calculable | Expired historical price; confirm generation and seller on any replacement offer |
| AirTag, four-pack | Retailer and condition not stated | Not stated | Below $19 per tracker (under $76 total) | Not calculable | Expired historical price; the lower unit cost only makes sense if you need four |
No evidence in the roundup establishes an all-time-low price, a membership requirement, a coupon requirement, or a guaranteed new-device condition for every listing. Retail pages can retain product pages after a promotion ends, so a visible model page is not proof that the old price is still honored.

Is the iPad A16 still the right budget buy?
At roughly $299 or less, the A16 iPad is aimed at browsing, streaming, reading, schoolwork, video calls, light games and shared family use. It is a sensible new-device choice when those tasks matter more than sustained professional performance.
Where it fits
- Choose it for everyday apps, media, web research, note taking and occasional gaming.
- Prefer a larger storage tier when the tablet will hold games, photos, downloaded video or offline school material; a cheap base configuration can become restrictive.
- A discounted older iPad Air or a reputable refurbished iPad Pro may offer more performance at a similar price, but compare battery condition, included accessories, warranty and return period rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
The decisive accessory limitation
iPad A16 does not support Apple Pencil Pro. It supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and first-generation Apple Pencil, with an adapter required for the first-generation model. Apple lists the USB-C Pencil at $79 on its U.S. accessories store: apple.com/shop/ipad/accessories. Do not treat a $99 Pencil Pro promotion as part of an A16 bundle.

When an M4 iPad Pro discount is worthwhile
The M4 iPad Pro is now a previous-generation Pro tablet: Apple identifies the current Pro line as M5 in its 2026 announcement (Apple newsroom). An M4 clearance deal can still make sense, but only when the price gap versus an M5 model is substantial enough to compensate for buying older inventory.
Check the exact configuration
- 11-inch versus 13-inch: the 13-inch model provides more workspace; the 11-inch is easier to carry.
- Storage: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB tiers have dramatically different prices. The cited $1,699.97 example was an 11-inch 2TB model, not a representative price for the entry configuration.
- Display and workload: pay the Pro premium for the Pro display, high sustained performance, demanding creative applications or very large local files—not for ordinary browsing.
- Total system cost: add a compatible Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil Pro, case and any protection plan. Accessories can erase a headline discount.
- Condition and coverage: verify whether the unit is new, Apple-certified refurbished, retailer-refurbished or open-box, then check warranty and the return deadline.
For many buyers, Apple’s current M4 iPad Air is the more balanced alternative. MacRumors lists March 2026 starting prices of $599 for the 11-inch Air and $799 for the 13-inch model (buyer’s guide). It supports Apple Pencil Pro without requiring the Pro display premium. Choose the discounted M4 Pro when its display, storage or performance is genuinely needed and the savings over M5 are material—not merely $50 or $100.

Was the historical $99 Pencil Pro price good?
Yes, for an owner of a compatible iPad: $99 was $30 below the $129 U.S. list price. Pencil Pro adds squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback and Find My support, which matter for drawing, handwriting and annotation. It is unnecessary for a basic A16 buyer, who should budget for the $79 USB-C model instead. Marketplace and open-box listings require an especially careful model-number, seller and return-policy check.

The historical offer put a single AirTag at about $23 and the four-pack below $19 per tracker. A four-pack lowers the effective unit cost, but only buy it when you have several real uses—keys, luggage, a wallet, bike or similar items. Otherwise, the unused trackers turn a nominal discount into overspending.

Quick Recap
Offers to reject or investigate further
- Expired pages: a retained product page does not preserve a July 2025 promotion.
- “Up to” discounts: identify the storage and screen size that produced the maximum reduction.
- Open-box substitutions: compare included chargers, cosmetic grade, warranty and return terms with a new unit.
- Membership or coupon prices: activate the coupon and include any recurring membership fee in the calculation.
- Marketplace sellers: verify that the seller is the retailer or an authorized seller.
- Cellular models: account for service-plan costs; a larger apparent discount may reflect a higher starting price.
- Financing language: monthly payments are not a sale price. Apple’s U.S. Upgrade program advertises eligible iPad leases from $11.99, subject to approval and program terms, and excludes iPad A16 (Apple newsroom).
Buying checklist for any replacement deal
- Record the exact model, screen size, storage and Wi-Fi or cellular variant.
- Confirm condition: new, Apple-certified refurbished, retailer-refurbished or open-box.
- Check the final checkout price, coupon activation, membership requirement, tax, shipping and delivery location.
- Match the Pencil model to the iPad before adding accessories.
- Compare the complete bundle—including keyboard, case and protection coverage—with the current M4 Air or M5 Pro.
- Verify warranty, return window, seller identity and stock status.
- Save a dated price record; mark the offer expired rather than assuming a seasonal price will return.
