No. There is no evidence Apple was secretly buying every iPhone 13 Pro Max. The viral four-figure claim appears to have confused Apple’s September 2025 iPhone 17 launch promotion with a normal purchase offer. Apple advertised standard trade-in credit of $200–$700 for an iPhone 13 or newer, while select carrier promotions offered up to $1,100 in credit toward an iPhone 17 Pro. That maximum was an upgrade subsidy with conditions—not $1,100 in cash for each old phone.
Where the $1,100 rumor came from
In its September 9, 2025 iPhone 17 announcement, Apple said customers could receive $200–$700 in Apple Trade In credit for an iPhone 13 or newer. The same announcement described select-carrier promotions of up to $1,100 in credit toward an iPhone 17 Pro when trading in an iPhone 13 or newer “in any condition.” Read the original wording in Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement and its September 11 follow-up.
Apple announced iPhone 17 preorders for September 12, 2025, with availability from September 19. The large number was therefore part of a launch-period effort to sell new phones and attract or retain wireless customers.
What the offers actually meant
| Offer type | Amount announced | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Apple Trade In | $200–$700 for an iPhone 13 or newer | Credit toward an eligible Apple purchase, subject to the device’s model, configuration and condition |
| Select carrier promotion | Up to $1,100 | Promotional credit toward an iPhone 17 Pro, with carrier, plan, financing and eligibility requirements |
| Private-party sale | Variable | Cash determined by buyer demand, storage, condition, unlock status and transaction risk |
The public wording covered “iPhone 13 or newer,” not only the 13 Pro Max. Apple also says trade-in values vary by condition, year and configuration. “Up to” describes a ceiling for qualifying transactions, not a guaranteed quote for every storage tier or damaged phone.

Why the promotion does not prove a buyback scheme
It was tied to a new-phone purchase
The $1,100 figure was attached to obtaining an iPhone 17 Pro through a participating carrier. A bill credit may be spread over many months rather than paid immediately. It is not an unrestricted Apple cash purchase.
Carriers were offering the largest subsidy
Carriers can spend heavily to win an upgrade and a continuing service relationship. They may recover value through service revenue, refurbishment, resale or parts channels. Those are ordinary industry explanations; the promotion does not establish that Apple needed to reclaim 13 Pro Max inventory.

“Any condition” still had conditions
Apple’s description of the select-carrier offer did not remove requirements such as a qualifying phone purchase, carrier account, wireless plan, financing arrangement, promotional period and continued service. A damaged phone might qualify for a carrier’s campaign while still failing another eligibility rule.
Is an iPhone 13 Pro Max still valuable?
Yes, it can attract buyers because of its large display, Pro camera system, A15 Bionic chip and preferred form factor. That explains legitimate secondhand demand, not a secret Apple valuation. There is no single “value” for the model: Apple’s estimate, a carrier credit, a refurbisher quote and a private-sale price answer different questions.

For a current estimate, enter the exact phone and condition in Apple’s Trade In tool. Apple’s shopping pages have recently shown roughly $195–$695 for “iPhone 13 or higher” toward eligible purchases, but that is a changing range and not a guaranteed iPhone 13 Pro Max quote. Compare it with the live terms of any carrier promotion and with realistic private-sale listings on the day you act.
Choose the option that fits your finances
Keep it
- The phone meets your performance needs.
- Battery life is acceptable and you prefer its size or cameras.
- A new phone would add cost without solving a problem you have.
Repair it
Repair can be sensible when one major component is the problem and the rest of the phone is sound. Apple introduced Self Service Repair for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models in the United States; see the Apple announcement. iFixit’s parts page displayed a $44.99 battery and $149.99 screen when crawled, before labor, tools and shipping; prices and stock change.

Those are parts prices, not a professional repair quote. Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max repair manual warns that proper knowledge, experience and tools are required, and that improper work can impair functionality or water resistance. Repair is a poor bet when the phone also has liquid damage, back-glass and display damage, Face ID or camera faults, Activation Lock, a carrier lock or a prior non-genuine repair.
Apple’s 2024 announcement about used genuine parts and its current parts-support list should not be read as saying every used-part feature applies to the 13 Pro Max.

Trade it in
Trade in when you already want a newer iPhone and the verified promotion beats your alternatives after all costs. Confirm the exact carrier, plan, financing term, credit timing and cancellation consequences in your account—not in a social-media screenshot.
Sell it privately
A clean, unlocked phone may produce more cash than standard Apple credit. In exchange, you handle listing, payment and shipping risk. Disclose storage, battery health, carrier status and damage; check the IMEI, back up the phone, turn off Find My, remove it from your Apple Account and document its condition before shipment. Use a safe local meeting place if selling in person.
Recycle it
Recycling is appropriate when repair and resale are uneconomic or the battery is unsafe. Do not place a swollen or damaged battery in household trash.

- Write down the new iPhone’s price, taxes and activation or upgrade fees.
- Add any remaining balance on your current phone.
- Record the required wireless plan and the number of months the credit lasts.
- Ask what happens to unpaid credits if you cancel service, change plans or pay off the device early.
- Compare the resulting total upgrade cost with Apple’s live estimate and a private-sale cash offer.
- Only then decide whether the promotional credit is worth surrendering an unlocked phone.
For example, the relevant comparison is not “$1,100 versus $0.” It is: new-phone and service costs, minus the credits you will actually receive, versus the cost of keeping or repairing your current phone and the cash you could obtain by selling it.

- “Up to” means a maximum, not a universal quote.
- “Credit” may mean monthly bill credits rather than cash.
- “Select carriers” excludes customers outside those carriers or plans.
- “Any condition” describes one trade-in criterion, not the removal of every term.
- “iPhone 13 or newer” does not single out the Pro Max.
The bottom line for 13 Pro Max owners
The September 2025 offer was an upgrade subsidy designed to move customers to the iPhone 17 lineup. It was not evidence that Apple was buying up all remaining iPhone 13 Pro Max phones, and the $1,100 maximum was not a guaranteed cash value for your handset. Check the live Apple or carrier estimate, calculate the full commitment and choose among keeping, repairing, trading in, selling or recycling based on your needs.
