Salesforce Headless 360 is an architectural layer, not a new CRM that replaces Salesforce screens. Announced on April 15, 2026, it packages Salesforce data, business logic, permissions and automation for access through APIs, Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, CLI commands and applications outside the standard browser interface. Salesforce’s goal is to let people, software and AI agents invoke governed Salesforce operations wherever work happens.

The practical opportunity is largest for organizations that already rely on Salesforce as a system of record. The hosted Headless 360 MCP server is still documented as a beta service, API access depends on edition and licensing, and there is no single public “Headless 360” price.

What Salesforce Headless 360 is—and is not

Salesforce describes Headless 360 as a way to extend its platform beyond the user interface. Its announcement says major capabilities can be exposed through APIs, MCP tools and CLI commands, allowing external applications and agents to use Salesforce data and business rules.

Question Accurate answer
Is it a replacement for the Salesforce UI? No. Salesforce still needs interfaces for human work, administration, reporting, approvals, exception handling and recovery.
Is it the same as Agentforce? No. Agentforce builds and manages Salesforce agents; Headless 360 exposes Salesforce capabilities to agents, developers and applications across more surfaces.
Is it a standalone CRM? No. Salesforce presents it as a capability and architecture layer spanning existing platform investments.
Is every Salesforce feature available immediately? No. Coverage is expanding, and the hosted MCP service is explicitly beta.
Does it remove the need for Salesforce expertise? No. Security, data quality, workflows, deployment and API governance remain customer responsibilities.

Salesforce’s partner enablement material calls Headless 360 an extension of Salesforce to agents and developer users rather than a replacement for the interface or a competitor to Agentforce. Salesforce’s partner explanation is the clearest qualification of the launch language.

Why Salesforce is making the interface optional

Browser automation is a poor foundation for autonomous enterprise work. An agent that clicks through screens is vulnerable to layout changes, slower than a direct operation and difficult to constrain or audit. Enterprise actions also require structured records, validation rules, approvals, identity and permissions—not just a visible button.

Salesforce’s thesis is that the authoritative business logic should remain in the platform while the interface becomes interchangeable. A Slack assistant, mobile application, coding agent or third-party MCP client could invoke the same governed operation as a person using Salesforce. This is Salesforce’s strategic claim, not proof that every workflow will be reliable without careful engineering. Salesforce’s announcement frames the shift as an “agent-first” enterprise architecture.

What sits inside Headless 360

APIs

Existing REST, SOAP, Bulk, Metadata and other Salesforce APIs remain foundational. API availability varies by edition. Salesforce’s July 2026 help documentation says Enterprise, Unlimited, Developer and Performance editions include API access by default; Professional may require an add-on; Group and Essentials do not include it by default and cannot purchase it as an add-on under that documentation. Check the current edition rules before designing an integration.

MCP tools and hosted servers

MCP standardizes how compatible AI clients discover and call tools. Salesforce’s marketing page refers to more than 60 new MCP tools, while the hosted-server documentation describes four stable tools backed by a growing library of operations. These are different layers of the presentation, not necessarily contradictory counts. Salesforce’s overview and the hosted MCP documentation provide the two views.

CLI commands and coding skills

Salesforce positions CLI access for metadata, Apex, deployment, testing and environment management. It also reports more than 30 preconfigured coding skills for coding agents; that number is a Salesforce-reported launch figure and may change. Summer ’26 developer guidance describes the release context.

Headless Experience Layer

The Headless Experience Layer separates data, business logic and permissions from the screen so organizations can present their own web, mobile, Slack or embedded experiences without rebuilding the rules for each channel. Salesforce describes this layer at salesforce.com/headless.

How Headless 360 relates to Agentforce

A useful distinction is:

  • Agentforce: Salesforce’s platform for creating, deploying and managing AI agents.
  • Headless 360: The distribution and execution architecture that makes Salesforce capabilities callable by those agents, external software and developers.
  • Interaction surfaces: Slack, Salesforce screens, web and mobile applications, coding environments and other MCP-aware clients.
  • Salesforce core: The records, workflows, approvals, sharing rules and automation that remain authoritative.

Headless 360 can therefore make an Agentforce capability available in more places, but MCP itself is not an autonomous agent. MCP standardizes tool access; it does not guarantee correct reasoning, safe tool selection, approval or transactional consistency. Salesforce’s partner material describes Headless 360 as a distribution layer around Agentforce. Read the partner enablement guide.

What developers can use today

As documented in August 2026, the most concrete implementation is the hosted Headless 360 MCP server:

  • Status: Beta Service, available starting in July 2026.
  • API version: v67.0 and later.
  • Authentication: OAuth through an External Client App configured with the mcp_api scope.
  • Production endpoint: https://api.salesforce.com/platform/mcp/v1/platform/headless-360
  • Operations: Record queries and updates, user and permission-set management, Apex-trigger deployment, event-driven integrations, named credentials and Commerce Cloud orders are among the documented categories.

It is distinct from Salesforce’s Data 360 MCP server, which is limited to Data 360 data. The operation library is growing, so a launch announcement should not be read as a guarantee that every Salesforce feature is already exposed through this endpoint. Confirm supported operations, limits, beta terms and client compatibility in the current documentation.

What an agent-first workflow looks like

Sales and service

A sales assistant could check availability, update an opportunity and request approval from a conversation. A service agent could retrieve customer context, verify entitlement, propose a resolution and update a case. The agent still operates within configured objects, fields, sharing rules and approval processes.

Slack and external applications

An employee-facing application can present its own interface while invoking Salesforce logic behind it. A Slack assistant might retrieve account context or initiate an approved workflow without requiring the employee to open several Salesforce pages.

Coding and administration

A coding agent could inspect metadata, generate Apex or Lightning Web Component code, run tests and prepare a deployment. Human review, deployment gates and environment separation remain necessary; agent access does not make generated code production-safe automatically. Salesforce’s developer guide discusses this workflow.

Cross-system orchestration

Salesforce operations can be coordinated with ERP, billing, warehouse or identity systems through APIs and events. That is also where complexity rises: partial failures, duplicate writes, retries, event ordering and system-of-record conflicts must be designed explicitly.

Security and governance are the real implementation work

Salesforce says Headless 360 agents inherit identity, permissions, field-level security, sharing rules, compliance controls, observability and workflows. That is a platform-design promise, not automatic security. A client connected to an over-privileged user can still expose or modify too much.

  • Use least-privilege integration users and permission sets.
  • Review object- and field-level security and record sharing.
  • Allowlist tools and separate sandbox, staging and production clients.
  • Require human approval for irreversible or high-value actions.
  • Protect named credentials and rotate secrets.
  • Log prompts, tool calls, results, approvals and resulting record changes.
  • Test prompt injection in retrieved text, unauthorized requests, duplicate calls, timeouts and partial outages.
  • Provide a visible audit trail, manual Salesforce fallback and rollback or correction procedure.

MCP improves interoperability; it does not solve prompt injection, bad reasoning, idempotency or policy interpretation by itself.

Timing and maturity

Salesforce announced Headless 360 on April 15, 2026. Summer ’26 sandbox preview was scheduled for May 8, with production rollouts on May 15, June 5, June 12 and June 13 depending on the instance. Salesforce identified Headless 360 as a major developer theme, but the hosted MCP service remains beta. See the Summer ’26 schedule and the announcement.

What it may cost

There is no universal public Headless 360 subscription price. A real deployment may combine Salesforce edition and platform licenses, API entitlements, Agentforce usage, Data 360, Slack or integration products, implementation and monitoring.

Published price signal Qualification
Platform Starter: $25 per user per month Public Salesforce price, billed annually; subject to change and not a complete Headless 360 cost.
Platform Plus: $100 per user per month Public Salesforce price, billed annually; scope and entitlements differ from Starter.
Agentforce: $500 per 100,000 Flex Credits At the cited rate, a listed 20-credit action equates to $0.10; other billing models include $2 per conversation.
Headless 360 hosted MCP No single standalone public list price stated in the cited materials; beta and underlying entitlements require confirmation.

Sources: Salesforce Platform pricing, Agentforce pricing and Salesforce AI billing models. Model API calls, Flex Credits, conversation volume, LLM usage, integration traffic, human review and implementation—not just the advertised action price.

Who should consider it?

Organization Fit Why
Salesforce-centric enterprise Strong Can reuse established records, workflows, permissions and approvals across new surfaces.
Salesforce-heavy developer team Strong CLI, coding-agent skills and metadata operations fit existing delivery practices.
Microsoft 365-centric company Depends Microsoft Copilot Studio may be a more natural starting point when identity and data live primarily in Microsoft 365.
Greenfield document chatbot Weak Headless 360 may add Salesforce licensing and governance that the use case does not need.
Small Salesforce edition Weak or uncertain API availability and add-on restrictions can be decisive.
Regulated enterprise Potentially strong, with conditions Governed execution is valuable, but beta services, audit evidence and approval controls must meet policy.

A safer pilot plan

  1. Choose one bounded workflow. Start with read-only case research, opportunity assistance, employee lookup or a low-risk Slack action. Avoid refunds, permission administration, financial postings and irreversible bulk updates.
  2. Define the authority boundary. Document readable objects and fields, writable fields, approval requirements, authoritative systems, permitted clients and actions the agent must refuse.
  3. Use a non-production environment. Configure the External Client App, OAuth and mcp_api scope in a sandbox first, then test supported operations against representative data.
  4. Exercise failure cases. Include missing and contradictory records, unauthorized requests, prompt injection, duplicate requests, invalid IDs, timeouts, conflicting approvals and downstream outages.
  5. Measure operational outcomes. Track completion and action accuracy, unauthorized-action rate, escalations, latency, API and credit consumption, human review time, rollback frequency, audit completeness and cost per successful workflow.
  6. Retain a human fallback. Operators need a manual Salesforce path, inspectable decisions, correction procedures and clear ownership when automation fails.

Alternatives and architectural choices

Approach Advantage Main caution
Headless 360 plus Agentforce Reuses Salesforce-native data, permissions and workflow logic. Layered licensing, usage costs and beta MCP coverage.
Salesforce APIs plus a custom MCP gateway Maximum control over orchestration and tool policy. Your team owns security, maintenance, observability and compatibility.
Microsoft Copilot Studio Natural fit for Microsoft 365, Teams and Power Platform estates. Salesforce context and CRM governance may require connectors or duplication.
Integration-led architecture Coordinates CRM, ERP, service and data platforms. Harder handling of partial failure, retries and conflicting system-of-record rules.
Traditional Salesforce UI, Flow and Apex Mature, familiar controls for predictable human-led work. Does not provide the same multi-surface, agent-oriented access model.

Microsoft’s alternative is described at Microsoft Copilot Studio.

Bottom line for buyers

Headless 360 is strategically significant because it turns Salesforce’s accumulated data and workflow investment into callable infrastructure for agents and applications. It is most compelling when Salesforce already owns the authoritative business process and the organization needs that process available in Slack, custom applications, coding tools or other agent clients.

It is not a free, finished replacement for Salesforce’s interface, and it is not synonymous with Agentforce. Before committing, verify API edition rights, supported MCP operations, beta terms, permission design, workflow quality, rate limits and a workload-level cost model. The launch slogan matters less than whether one narrowly defined process can execute safely, measurably and reversibly.
