Reports described limited versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint with advertising, missing advanced features and saving tied to OneDrive. The experiment appeared inconsistent and possibly regional. Microsoft told BleepingComputer that it had conducted limited testing and had no plans at that time to launch a free, ad-supported desktop version. As of August 18, 2026, there is no verified evidence in the available record that the test became a permanent worldwide product.
What Microsoft tested
The reported experiment applied to the Windows desktop versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It offered basic editing without a Microsoft 365 subscription, but it was not equivalent to fully licensed Office. Advertising appeared inside the application window, and users were shown prompts encouraging them to subscribe to Microsoft 365.
The distinction matters because Microsoft already offers officially supported free browser versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The unusual part of the 2025 report was the possibility of running limited desktop applications on Windows without paying.
How the reported setup worked
The following was the reported test flow, not a currently verified installation procedure. Microsoft may have withdrawn it, changed the labels or limited it to particular regions, accounts or builds.

- Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which protects your personal and business information by encoding your keystrokes
- 2.4GHz wireless delivers a reliable connection with up to a 15-foot range
- Optical Technology 1000 dpi provides responsive cursor control
- Snap-in transceiver stows conveniently under the mouse LED optical tracking technology
- Windows shortcut keys provide easy access to commonly used functions Media keys for music and video control
- Download and install Microsoft 365, formerly branded Office 365.
- At the “Sign in to get started” screen, choose “Skip for now.”
- On the welcome screen, select “Continue for free.”
- Choose “Save to OneDrive.”
BleepingComputer could not reproduce the behavior consistently. If those options do not appear, that is not evidence of a Windows permissions problem; the test may simply not be active for the account, region or installer.
The biggest catch was OneDrive-only saving
The reported free desktop route allowed editing but tied saving to OneDrive. Saving edited files to a local drive reportedly required a Microsoft 365 subscription. That restriction affects more than convenience: it changes backup arrangements, privacy decisions, offline work and the ability to keep files on a USB drive, NAS or another cloud service.
The available reporting does not establish a complete offline policy. It is unclear whether every kind of local file could be opened, how long editing would work without an internet connection, or how account checks would behave offline. The practical conclusion is narrower and safer: a workflow dependent on OneDrive saving is a poor fit for anyone who needs reliably local document control.

What the test reportedly left out
The apps were described as basic-editing versions rather than the full desktop suite. The reported limitations included the following examples; they describe the observed test and not a finalized Microsoft product specification.
Word
- Dictation and add-ins.
- Advanced layout, design, references and mail-merge tools.
- Some table, shape, SmartArt, chart, header/footer, equation, object and drawing functions.
- Various positioning, formatting and publishing features.
Excel
- Add-ins, Analyze Data and Flash Fill.
- Conditional formatting, PivotTables and recommended PivotTables.
- Advanced charts, PivotCharts, slicers and timelines.
- Macros, formula auditing, custom views and other data tools.
PowerPoint
- Dictation, add-ins, Designer and SmartArt.
- Advanced media tools, screen recording and custom slide shows.
- Slide Master and Notes Master.
- Some animation, narration, timing, drawing and recording features.
For occasional letters, simple budgets or basic presentations, those omissions may be tolerable. They are decisive for professional Excel analysis, complex Word production or presentation work that depends on recording, masters or advanced animation.
What the ads looked like
BleepingComputer reported a vertical advertising panel on the right side of the Office window, with a “See benefits” link associated with a Microsoft 365 subscription upsell. Secondary coverage from The Tech Portal also described periodic video advertising, including claims of 15-second videos. The banner-style panel is the better-established detail; the exact format and frequency of any video ads were not established as a universal Microsoft policy.
Free web Office, the tested desktop route and paid Microsoft 365
These are three different products or experiences. Microsoft’s documented free option is the browser-based service at Microsoft 365 for the web. Microsoft Support says a free account receives web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, requires a Microsoft account and includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. Paid Personal and Family plans include installable desktop apps and, under the cited comparison, 1 TB of OneDrive storage per user.

For the documented free web option, see Microsoft’s comparison of Microsoft 365 subscriptions and free web apps. Do not assume that the ad behavior reported for the desktop experiment also applies to the browser apps.
Was it available everywhere?
There was no cited Microsoft page promising access by country, Windows version or account type. BleepingComputer said it could not reproduce the offer and suggested a regional experiment. The Tech Portal reported seeing the test in India, but that does not establish broad availability there or elsewhere.
Availability could also have depended on the installation channel, account, server-side eligibility or a previously activated Office copy. One user might see “Continue for free” while another with the same Windows version would not.

What Microsoft said
According to BleepingComputer’s report, Microsoft acknowledged conducting limited testing and said it had no plans at that time to launch a free, ad-supported desktop version of Office. That statement supports describing the event as an experiment, not a worldwide launch. It does not establish that Microsoft permanently abandoned the idea or that existing subscribers will receive ads in their paid applications.
Who might benefit—and who should avoid it?
Potentially useful for
- Students and casual users who need occasional basic editing.
- People already comfortable storing documents in OneDrive.
- Users willing to accept advertising and missing advanced tools.
- Households that use Word, Excel or PowerPoint only intermittently.
Poor fit for
- Excel users who need macros, PivotTables, advanced charts or data tools.
- PowerPoint users who rely on recording, animation, slide masters or custom shows.
- Writers, businesses and professionals who require local storage.
- People handling confidential documents who do not want a cloud-dependent workflow.
- Anyone who needs predictable, globally available software with a clearly supported license.
Alternatives if the experiment is unavailable or unsuitable
Microsoft 365 web apps
Use Microsoft’s free web apps for basic documents, spreadsheets and presentations in a browser. They are the clearly documented free Microsoft option, but they rely on a Microsoft account and OneDrive-centered storage.
Microsoft 365 Personal or Family
Paid plans are the straightforward choice when you need full desktop Word, Excel and PowerPoint, local-file support and the broader feature set. Microsoft lists current products at its Microsoft 365 comparison page. Exact pricing varies by region, billing term and promotions and should be checked on that live page.
Best Value
- Sleek and Modern Design: The Wireless Desktop 900, designed by Microsoft, features a contemporary minimalist aesthetic with quiet-touch keys for a comfortable and dynamic typing experience.
- Reliable Wireless Connection: Enjoy a plug-and-play wireless transceiver that provides a reliable connection up to 30 feet, ensuring seamless performance without hesitation.
- Convenient Hot Keys: Access your most commonly used functions easily with dedicated hot keys, enhancing your productivity and efficiency.
- Ambidextrous Mouse: Work comfortably with a full-size mouse designed for precise navigation, suitable for both left and right-handed users.
- Long Battery Life and Security: Benefit from an average 2-year battery life for both the keyboard and mouse, along with AES 128-bit encryption for secure data entry and peace of mind.
LibreOffice
LibreOffice is a locally installed, no-subscription suite. Its official download page provides the current installers. It avoids ads and mandatory OneDrive storage, but advanced features, templates, macros and formatting fidelity can differ from Microsoft Office.
Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
Google’s Docs, Sheets and Slides suit browser-first collaboration. They are a platform change rather than a Microsoft Office upgrade, and they may not preserve complex Office formatting or provide the same native desktop workflow.
Practical checks if you encounter the offer
- Confirm where files will be stored before editing confidential or business documents.
- Check your OneDrive quota; free Microsoft accounts have 5 GB under Microsoft’s cited comparison.
- Open a copy of an important file and verify formatting before relying on the workflow.
- Test saving, reopening and working without a network connection before traveling or working offline.
- Do not download “free Office” installers or activation tools from unofficial license-key sites.
The Bottom Line
This was a real but limited Microsoft experiment, not proof that desktop Office became permanently free. Microsoft’s established free web apps are the safest no-cost choice for basic work; choose Microsoft 365 or a local alternative when you need advanced features, dependable local files or a stable product commitment.
